What happened to red button services?

It does surprise me though ITV and C4 haven't made progress in the connected red button area to at least make their on demand content, available via most smart TVs, available directly from their channels.

4Music does have the extra 3 channels via the red button with a fairly simple set up but it's fairly unloved and C4 didn't take the opportunity to use a similar service to offer their Paralympic streams a couple of years ago.

I guess ITV and C4 have decided Smart TV apps are enough. I guess there may also be regulatory issues around additional broadcast services - though less-so with HbbTV stuff that doesn't take up huge DVB data bandwidth ?

What happened to red button services?

The Press Red prompt which appears during BBC news programming still annoys me. Surely if the news is on, that's the one time I don't need to press red to find out what the news is.

(And before anyone points it out, yes, I know you can remove it - it's still annoying though.)

You are assuming everyone has started watching the news at the beginning of the bulletin. AIUI one of the main reasons for the press red prompt is to remind viewers that there is a news text service they can check if they have missed the more important stories at the beginning of the bulletin by joining mid-way through. (In days gone by it would also have offered you the news loop made by the news on demand team)

What happened to red button services?

There were two major changes to the 'old school' BBC Red Button services. One was the BBC reducing it's spending on satellite capacity to run multi-screen and multi-stream services, the other was the Red Button effectively losing a separate commissioning budget to fund production specifically for Red Button services.

So - fewer outlets via linear broadcast delivery methods (satellite and cable specifically) and far less original content production for these services.

Isn't Wire TV what became L!VE TV?

Not really. L!VE TV bought Wire TV (possibly for sports rights and carriage agreement reasons?) but the Bristol-based WireTV content operation really had nothing really to do with the Canary Wharf Janet Street Porter/Kelvin McKenzie operation that Mirror Group set-up to run L!VE TV and make content for it.

Wire TV was set-up by a consortium of cable companies (in the days before full consolidation of cable provision under the Virgin brand) and was an attempt to create a 'cable only' channel as a USP for cable (a bit like The Parliament Channel in the pre-BBC Parliament days). It ran a lot of lifestyle content during daytime and early evening, but ran sport as well.

There were plans to spin-off the sports output they had under the Sportswire brand to be a separate channel but I don't think anything came of that.

When the channel didn't really get anywhere - it was sold to Mirror Group who wanted to get into running TV channels.

Eurovision 2019

Yes it's an ITV Studios France production

Endemol Shine had its eye on a selection programme for a while. Then after ITV Studios France swiped The Voice off Endemol Shine, they bagged Destination Eurovision too.

C'est la vie.

Though, to be fair, The Voice is an ITV Studios format now they own Talpa, so that isn't entirely unexpected. As ITV Studios expand internationally, local ITV Studios production operations in other countries have replaced other production companies in Europe who previously produced The Voice (under previous legacy deals that have now expired).

Top of the Pops

When it comes to the Angry Anderson thing, I wonder if there could be issues anyway regardless of Craig McLachlan? With the Neighbours clips, could it fall victim to the same rights issues as the Grease songs and the Thorn Birds theme?

I wouldn't be surprised if VPL was in place by then - which made things a lot easier.

Channel 4

The set looks very much the same as before, though the windows looks a bit unnatural when they shoot them from wide angles.

Yes - the view and window-pane lead-light grid look to be all part of a PBU at the same depth.

Eurovision 2019

Destination Eurovision will be shown on TV5 Monde this year which is widely available in the UK via Virgin and FTA Satellite.

TV5 Monde disappeared off channel 717 on Sky in early December.

Yes - I believe it has disappeared entirely from 28.2E - so it's not just disappeared from Sky by leaving the EPG, it's disappeared from all UK satellite platforms (Freesat, Sky and FTA)

Eurovision 2019

Not sure what your point is... Influences from flags are often part of Eurovision logos

The Star of David is a LOT more than an influence from a flag... It is a much more powerful symbol than just that.

The Eurovision Song Contest's only interest in perhaps utilising a 6-point star symbol for the branding of the 2019 event would nevertheless be because it happens to be on the host country's flag, rather than because of anything to do with Judaism and/or implying any opinion regarding the long-standing Israel/Palestine sensitivities etc.

You talk about the contest as if it's a person or a single organisation though? The reality is that the contest is the product of the production team making it that year (with some heavy steering from the EBU). This year that production is through KAN - the Israeli Host Broadcaster - and so they will be more than aware of the symbolism over-and-above the flag - as of course will the EBU.

The EBU is very aware of sensitivities in this regard I'm sure - with recent issues to do with prospective participants refusing to broadcast the Israeli entry.

Quote:

If the UK were ever to host the ESC in the future (which would presumably be after hell freezes over?!), and if that year's ESC logo was based in any way on the Union Flag, that would not mean that the EBU are suggesting any opinion regarding the Union (e.g. versus Scottish independence etc).

Yes - and there was a bit of a kerfuffle a few years ago when Scottish, Welsh and English flags were not on the 'approved' flag list...

However the Star of David has much more profound symbolism, and on a wholly different level, to that of the Scottish independence referendum. Particulary in relation to Nazi Germany.

I'm not criticising its use as a symbol, nor am I saying it shouldn't be used, but I think it's incredibly naive to think it's just a nod to the national flag. A symbol so loaded with heritage and meaning is never likely to be just that.

BT Sport - Launch of BT Sport Ultimate

There was a TVS 'The Saturday Match' with Fred Dinage in there somewhere too.

One of the few TVS programmes that are broadcastable. I think because the sport archive went to Meridian along with the news & some local programmes.

Assuming the rights are still available to broadcast. Having the paperwork means you know the rights situation at the point of original production. It doesn't mean that those rights are still available now (but it's a lot better than not knowing the rights!)

Sports rights are notoriously tricky.

Eurovision 2019

A contender for design quote of 2019 and we've barely left the first week of the year! 🤣

Let’s not forget though that the one and only reason for having a star as the logo is to reinforce the Star of David and the symbolism of Israel as a state. All that design talk is a load of guff.

This Morning

So because Studio 3 is available to them on Friday afternoons, This morning will no doubt pre-record the Sunday edition around 3.00pm on Fridays for Sunday transmission. I wonder how it will do ratings wise?

As it's a highlights show - presumably they can knock off a lot of links and stitch the show together in an edit, only having to record any additional content that is Sunday-only. Possibly quicker than recording as-live (and would allow Friday content to be dropped in)
