DAZN

Clicking around the website, I notice they have three UK offices. Two in London and one in Leeds. One of the London locations is Feltham.
So I wonder if they have taken over the former offices, studios and tech infrastructure left by British Eurosport when they left the site?

All the gallery equipment used by Eurosport in the Arqiva building was advertised on Peaker Pattinson's site a while back. I believe that Arqiva have closed the operation on that site.

Martin Lambie-Nairn has died

I still get a bit irritated that people call them "symbols" rather than idents, but it was nice to see a small tribute.

Well it was the name that was used for the channel idents for many years within the BBC, so it is kind of understandable. The word 'ident' is relatively new within the BBC to describe the channel identifier.

On many presentation vision & sound desks, the source button for the BBC One Globe or BBC Two animation was called 'SYM' or 'SYMBOL', and that continued once laser disc replay of the Lambie Nairn BBC One globe and character BBC Two elements arrived (replacing the solid state players that generated the BBC One 'COW' and the BBC Two logo animation).

It was also what NC1 and NC2 called things in regional round-ups. ("On the Symbol for 12 seconds" etc.)

The Sport Thread

The Ashes series in Australia appearing on Amazon, or possibly the India tour as well, both quite possible. Seems more likely right now than BT keeping the Australian rights. Although I notice they’re putting enough effort it to have some (voice over only) UK wraparound coverage. Not just cutting in to the Fox (sort of) world feed.

Pretty minimal effort and often cutting out of the host feed straight after the match is over without the presentation etc. Compared to year one pre-ashes which had studio presentation all night. Some of it they haven't even had a voiceover at all. Pretty sure this test so far (along with the NZ game) coverage has been purely the host feed with a sharp exit at the end of day's play.

That's kind of understandable given the current Covid situation though?

Future of Sky?

Just as a channel, is there a point to Sky One any more? I've not seen anything in the way of a big production/promotion that would attract me to it.

It's still one of their main outlets for their original productions, which arguably could be more important for them as they lose other, third party, content. That said - very little of their high-end stuff rates at all well. It always seems to be just a little bit 'off' compared to similar productions on the terrestrials.

Britbox UK - UK SVoD Platform.

AxG posted:
Here's a random screenshot from the first episode, which has the 'HD' label. There are a couple that don't have the label which do look worse.

Yes - that definitely looks like the HD version, a world away from the original 1980s PAL transfers, with their classic "BBC 80s film look"

Britbox UK - UK SVoD Platform.

Unfortunately I can’t take a screenshot with my iPhone using the BritBox app (must be a copyright filter) but the Joan Hickson Marple’s are in 4:3 on BritBox.

Ah - the Blu-rays were 4:3 pillarbox too, so that doesn't narrow it down.

How likely do you think it would be for UKTV to join iPlayer

In my opinion the transition is almost.inevitable and would expose more people to the brands and content from the UKTV channels.

They already have S4C on iPlayer and that isn't even owned by them so it makes sense for the UKTV channels to join.

I think this is very unlikely to happen in the short-to-medium term, particularly whilst BBC One/Two/Four/CBBC/CBeebies remain licence-fee funded, and UKTV remains pay-TV and/or commercially funded.

Whilst the overall BBC owns the commercial production, distribution and channel operation that is BBC Studios, BBC Studios are able to run commercial operations like UKTV that the public service branches of the BBC simply can't (though they cannot use the BBC brand on these commercial channel operations within the UK)

Catch-up for the UKTV channels will either need embedded advertising, or a pay-wall, to be financially viable - and those are two things that the BBC can't really do in iPlayer, whilst it remains a BBC-branded platform in the UK.

Of course - if the BBC One/Two/Four/CBBC/CBeebies channel operations move to be subscription, or advertising funded, then things would be very different...

Britbox UK - UK SVoD Platform.

The entire Mr Bean (live action) has been added to BritBox, but unfortunately they’ve got the cropped episodes that ITV4 show.

Given that BritBox UK is operated by ITV and handled by the ITV Hub team, I suspect that's why.

Are any of the BBC Joan Hickson Miss Marples on there? They were remastered in HD for a US Blu-ray release years ago (but haven't been released here in the UK on Blu-ray). The UK TV repeats are still from the 4:3 PAL original transfers by the look of it... If they were on Brit Box it would be interesting to see if they were nice, clean HD versions, or the muddy, 4:3 PAL composite originals.

UHD on BBC iPlayer

Hopefully this is OK in its own thread - apologies if not, I'm a bit new around here.

More shows will be made available on iPlayer in UHD with Hybrid Log Gamma over the festive period:

Quote:
Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks;
The Queen's Christmas Broadcast;
Black Narcissus;
Meerkat: A Dynasties Special;
and A Perfect Planet

The BBC News report implies viewers with compatible smart TVs will see an HbbTV prompt to switch to the 'live' UHD stream?

Usually avoid iPlayer if can watch on TV because of the DOG

Yes - with HDR that's even more of an issue as if you have a FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) TV the DOG alters the local dimming (making dark scenes bloom)

NOW TV

Interesting that a possible NOW TV 4K service has surfaced again in conversations.

I'm still highly sceptical of this but I could see it having a place on the platform.

I presume the sting of having BT, Disney+ and now Prime Video all in various flavours of 4K HDR Dolby etc on a Sky owned platform, whereas the native Sky product isn't, might be having an effect on the management and could be changing minds towards offering this.

Of course there have been rumoured tests already, so could 2021 see something appear without too much leadtime.

Wouldn't this veer very close to a Sky X-type service? The dishless-Sky announcements for the UK seem to have gone a bit cold - with no major developments announced, after the initial stuff.

Podcasting Microphones

The chances are that Røde mic is plugged into the Raspberry Pi + Pi Foundation 7" Touchscreen BBC Codec box next to it you can see connected via IP to whatever destination he is working to. I think the BBC are phasing out ISDN connections - partially because they are EOL and will be phased out by BT at some point, but also it's a cost saving if the correspondent also has broadband suitable. (The BBC need no longer pay for a permanent ISDN connection to each correspondent's home).

BBC Regional Redundancies

Part of the savings announced by BBC England earlier this year was to use automation more. In the regions that already use Mosart (London and Salford) that meant getting rid of PAs and using the inbuilt timing facilities of the system (as TV News have done for some time).

There is a new production system in the process of being rolled out I believe.

Yes - BBC English regions have been piloting at least one system that isn't Mosart AIUI, though that was in 2019. I don't know how things have continued during Covid.
