BBC World News: Presentation
BBC World is execellent in times like this. Owen Thomas was also very impressive all morning. Relaxed and informative. I like his interviewing style too. He asks questions in a way ordinary people would ask them... he doesn't try to show off.

BBC One: Christmas Ident discussion
I hate the ident. The music is twee and is totally inappropriate before the news. I'll be bored silly by it come Christmas Day. As for the BBC2 box not being aligned properly... er, get a life. Perhaps you need to think outside the box... not everything has to fit into straight lines.

BBC World News: Presentation
Yes, news is news and when you put on a news channel, that's what you should expect. However, news is also a form of entertainment. Serious entertainment yes, but unless there's a massive story that you want to be informed about it's there, competing with everything else, to hold your attention for as long as possible. If this wasn't the case, there'd be no need for titles, flashy sets, 3-D graphics etc. That's why a good mix of presenters, some with personality, some with (often assumed ) gravitas is so important. At times, BBC World seem to forget this. And it's why likeable presenters, such as Martine Dennis, Jon Sopel, Owen Thomas and Simon McCoy make 24-hour news channels a more comfortable watch. If World War Three breaks out, then perhaps all you'd want is Nik Gowing for 24 hours. For the rest of the time mix it up or die.

As for the debate on older presenters, I think every network has to have a good mix of old and young. BBC World can look like an edition of Grumpy Old Men - to see Nick Gowing followed by Jonathan Charles followed by Julain Marshall and now resurecting Jessell is just crazy and puts anyone vaguely younger off. Yet someone referred to Martine Dennis as one of the younger ones. And Owen must be the youngest of the lot.... yet Martine, though she looks great, must be over 50 - she's presented on World since the beginning. And Owen must be in his late thirties at least... he's been around for ever too. And frankly, I'd rather watch Owen, Martine and Peter Dobbie with a spinkling of older faces than a constant diet of po-faced stiff shirts with no sense of humour.

It was in fact the wonderful Owen Thomas who seems to be the main late weekend anchor now. I'm surprised he's not being used during the week... though he's probably got to do weekends for a bit since he's only just joined World. As for the debate on older presenters, I think every network has to have a good mix of old and young. Very good to see CNN's Owen Thomas now on BBC World at the weekend. It's very refreshing to have a younger newsreader with a bit of personality on the channel. Although I wonder how old Owen actually is? He's been around for years. Does he present during the week?
