ABC News 24

Looks smart... though not convinced about the set for news.
It's a bit "...you've won a fridge".

Unemployed Newscasters

I'm always surprised that Leyla Daybelge just disappeared after the end of the ITV News Channel. She was the main presenter on London Tonight for a while; she also regularly presented the Evening News.
Then nothing.
A/ She was very good. B/ She was very pretty. C/ She had an Irish accent and a foreign sounding name, which ticks multiple boxes as far as "diversity" is concerned.... that's all they seem to care about.

World coming from their old studio today. They're not doing more changes to the main set, are they?

BBC World News - to 14th January 2013

I never really considered Owen Thomas a shouter... now Jonathan Charles and Arron Hazelhurst... now that's a shouting match! I thought him and Martine were a good combination this morning.

And talking of full circle, Owen Thomas doing the business news - who actually seems to make stocks and shares and unemployment figures vaguely interesting.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

I actually think it's far more important than that.
Men's work: war / natural disaster reporting.
Women's work: look pretty and read the auto-cue for 60 seconds on BBC1.
On the BBC News at Ten there are hardly any female correspondents who appear regularly (watch it this week and look at the ratio). There are hardly any female correspondents in hot spots. I can think only of Orla Guerin in Pakistan and Caroline Wyatt, at Defence. There are lots of women in social affairs, however. Caroline Hawley was in Baghdad for a while a year ago but seems to have disappeared.
It's not just a case of getting older women to present the news - it's a case of sexism, pure and simple. It appears there's a very male culture at BBC News where women are not valued as journalists and correspondents. There are plenty of women working in the BBC but why aren't they allowed on the front line (and I'm not just talking about war)? Where's the Kate Adie of 2010?
Oh, today it's Ellie Crissell and she's reading the autocue at 8pm on BBC1. Isn't she pretty?

GMTV (1993 - 2010)

you what?

GMTV (1993 - 2010)

GMTV's problem is a bit like TV-am's in the early days... BBC Breakfast is so cozy, light and bland it feels it has to be cozier, lighter and blander. It's also become very lazy in the type of stories it covers and the way it covers them. GMTV is a bit like the Daily Express - once very good but now a shadow of itself with predictable "there's anger today at..." headlines all over the place and "oh look, it's snowing in winter in America".
I agree with some of the other comments - this could be a really good opportunity to develop the show into a slightly more serious and credible programme like the morning shows in America, which are huge.
I think they do have a problem with the presenters. There are too many and most have been there for years. Sometimes it feels they, and some of the correspondents, are simply going through the motions.
There are endless "lives" - which are nothing more than a rehash of the Daily Mail or Sun. There's very little story-telling or investigation or nicely crafted reports.
GMTV should set the agenda, not follow the tabloids. There should be more original reporting. It should become a little less twee and just a little more modern.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

There must be something going round the newsroom. Owen Thomas on World sounds as though he's been smoking 100 a day. And did anyone catch the PM presenter on Radio 4 yesterday... Saturday.... she could barely say her own name.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Agreed. There is a huge difference from presenting a formal BBC1-style bulletin and presenting rolling news. Fiona Armstrong has never done that. I know Julia Sommerville did a bit of that at the ITN News Channel... but they could be very exposed. I find it ridiculous to be harking back to old names like these from the 80s and 90s (with the exception of ZB) and not be developing and keeping older talent on air. And it goes to show how shallow the pool is to choose from because so many women have found their careers grinding to a halt when they reach 40.

Owen Thomas presenting World News Today Business Edition on World.. has he ever done this before?
