EastEnders

Back to the golden days of EE next week. The show's first ever two hander episode featuring the iconic Den & Angie Watts.

How I miss those days of EE - when the show was truly class. Unlike the endless carousel of sensationalised deaths, murders, affairs, 'secrets' and 'reveals' that it is today.

Even the repeat run on Drama, currently at May 1994 - highlights how bad the show is nowadays.

EastEnders

Classic 1994 episodes on Drama this week, have really been putting modern day episodes to shame.

Frank Butcher walking out and Grant's mate, nutter Dougie Gold.

EastEnders

Being reported that when it returns EastEnders will be back on 4 nights a week, but with only 20 minutes episodes.

Obviously a 7:30 start makes sense to extend the One Show and start them at 7:40. But the 8pm starts become slightly messier.

The BBC one again ignoring calls for the show to return to two/three nights a week, on a permanent basis.

Little Britain removed from streaming platforms

Some of us believe in 'purity'

Yes that's what I was afraid of.

But seriously, I'm not going to continue debating with people who are furiously defending their right to have a chuckle at the N word and cancelling their BritBox subscriptions because it won't give them their fix of racial slurs.

While this debate is essential, I don't enjoy feeling this angry with a site I have enjoyed for 19 years. With that in mind I'm stepping away from the forum for a while.

All I will say is, to the more reasoned members of the forum (many of whom I respect even if they have disagreed with me here) I would ask that you really consider your position of privilege before eye rolling this away as politically correctness gone mad.

Oh get over yourself!

Personally I could not care less what you think.

I've already explained my position as to 'purity'. if you choose to misinterpret that (as you clearly have), that is your problem.

Note: As someone who suffered four long years of severe discrimination and bullying in my School years in the 90's for being 'different', I am not taking lectures from you regarding 'standards' - as I full well know what it is like to be on the receiving end.

However I don't agree that those attitudes should be swept under the carpet as if they never existed. How can people learn from past mistakes if the past is not there to see?

Little Britain removed from streaming platforms

I think a sensible move is to reassess contentious content and then reupload it with a warning/historical context.

However, the cynic is me does think that maybe Gone With the Wind's removal from HBO Max was potentially to garner publicity for a recently launched service. Or at least in doing what was right, the publicity was deemed to have done the service no harm.

Or have two versions available to view on streaming platforms.

An uncut version (with warnings) and possible pin code access, and a censored version with all the bits removed that are deemed offensive.

To add to the above post. I don't even agree with the cutting out of scenes in DVD releases due to 'music rights issues'. It spoils the DVD release because some distributor is too tight to pay out for music rights.

In case anyone is unaware of the contentious content which has caused the temporary removal of the episode of Fawlty Towers from UKTV Play, I've placed it in a spoiler below. I think it's important for context, should anyone be unaware.

WARNING: The below clip contains use of racial slurs including the N word:

Now I am fully aware that the character of the Major is an old buffoon that we are meant to laugh at, not with, but if you don't shudder at the use of the language, then you really don't get the effect these words have.

I don't even agree with the cutting of out scenes on DVD releases due to 'music rights issues'. It spoils the episodes because a distributor is too tight to pay out for the rights.

It's not "PC GONE MAD!!!" for a broadcaster to review content which contains language like this, or to reevaluate the use of blackface for entertainment purposes. I think the broadcasters have behaved in a correct (if long overdue) manner, and those that are jumping mad seem to have become the precious snowflakes they often malign.

Err No!

Some of us prefer to watch classic programmes in their original uncut form. Not a censored version to fit today's narrative.

Some fail to grasp that classic programmes were a product of their time and should be viewed as such.

I'm most certainly not paying out for a Britbox subscription to view an incomplete archive of censored programming.

This could be one factor why Britbox struggling to keep and grow it's subscriber base, after the one month free trial.

Not everyone who wants to watch full and uncut programmes is a racist, bigot or 'phobe', or a defender of past attitudes. Some of us believe in 'purity', watching something as it was originally broadcast years ago.

Good Morning Britain in 2020

Piers has been a complete hypocrite in the historical statue debate.

Here he is in 2017 arguing AGAINST the removal of Nelson's Column (and other historical statues).

Forward to 2020 GMB, he is now seen arguing and ranting at those, that had the same arguments/POV as he did in 2017.

Even the classic programmes are now cut to shreds to 'fit 2020 attitudes', it has gone beyond pathetic.

The latest repeat run of Are You being Served? on GOLD has many scenes cut, many are obvious. Including today's episode 'The hand of fate' involving a Japanese customer. What is the point of GOLD, when the limited programmes they do show nowadays (on an endless cycle) are cut to shreds?

It's worse with Britbox, where the BBC and ITV have the cheek to demand money to view limited programming, of which the more acceptable archive material is cut to shreds to fit the standards of the platform.

I am not a lover of censoring the past to fit today's narrative. The past happened, we have to live and learn from it, not pretend it never happened.

Luckily the likes of Talking Pictures pushed back on this. Otherwise they would have little to show, and what they could show would be heavily censored.

My attitude is: If you feel something may be offensive, don't watch it.

BBC Three to return as a linear channel?

How likely is it that BBC Three will return as a linear channel, when the BBC is trying to reduce costs, not increase them. Plus the gradual decline in linear TV viewing?

Digital Spy

A few months back I got warned by the mods and given restrictions on being able to post for several days for "repeatedly misgendering" a user. If it was intentional and malicious I'd understand it, but when it's someone on an internet forum, with a username which doesn't make their gender clear, and they didn't never tried to tell me otherwise(or I missed it if they did), how am I supposed to know? There's some people on the forum who I think intentionally set out to be offended and sit there virtually with their fingers hovering over the report button. Of course the **** moderation is just at fault, being warned for doing something the user never told me was wrong.

That same user this morning just accused me of being "vile" and my "mask slipping" for making what was an obvious light hearted comment. It's clear said member is just part of the permanently outraged group. Thankfully the mods seem to have seen sensible for once and deleted that post.

It's somewhat Double-standards when Stolengoodplacejanet (probably one of the most 'offended" easily on DS) continues to post her bait-ey, rude, condescending posts on DS, many of which contravene the so called rules - without any apparent punishment.

Some recent examples:

https://forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/comment/95936230#Comment_95936230

[Mod edit: don't think chunk of DS posts needs to be directly on this site]

Excuse me but doesn't the above come across as rude, shouty and against the rules for telling someone they are going on ignore?

Because the said user has won some 'victories" on DS it has emboldened them to become somewhat more rude, with the Mods as usual doing jack.

I've been warning in the past for even casually mentioning the ignore feature.

Not to mention stirring up the pot in the Classic Corrie thread last week, resulting in two temp bans and what appears to be three permanent ones.

However SERIOUSLY! WTF is going on? how come this "member" continues to get away with such postings?

Anyone else would be warned or banned for such postings.
