2019 General Christmas election.

There won’t be a general election in Ireland until the Spring I can assure you of that.

Usually no more than 4 weeks campaigning.

BBC Breakfast - 16th July onwards

chris posted:
If the press were to follow the same rules as broadcasters, it would die and we would have nowhere near as much investigative journalism as we do now.

I’m clearly not going to persuade you but as a journalist working in broadcast media, I am wholly and undoubtedly in favour of living in a country where people and papers can say what they want freely.

Even when it descends into personal insults?

I find it hard to believe that describing someone as having “a Mr Spock hairdo and owl eyes” is acceptable in any situation.

One can put arguments forward in an opinion piece quite legitimately and forcefully without resorting to personal insults.

That quote was just unnecessary.

The BBC World News Thread

I’d imagine they need the two areas so Aaron can present the biz while Lucy can still stay in the same studio and get ready for her next segment/interview?

Yes Noel and Julie Etchingham used to present the Friday edition of BBC Breakfast News and presented the final edition before it became BBC Breakfast.

BBC News: Presenters, correspondent & rotas

The latest round of changes taking place and these are the changes I’ve gleaned:

James Reynolds back from Rome to base as a newsreader

Mark Lowen from Istanbul to Rome

While Orla Guerin is now based in Istanbul this is as International Correspondent - whether a new Turkey Correspondent is appointed remains unclear

Hywel Griffith back to Cardiff as Wales Correspondent from Sydney

Shaimaa Khalil to become Sydney Correspondent

Sian Lloyd returns to role Midlands Correspondent from Wales Correspondent

Sima Kotecha back to news correspondent from Midlands

The Andrew Neil Show

So I guess it will be This Week in all but name? The only reason Andrew left This Week, and pulled the whole programme down with him with his exit was that he just found it too late at night. 7pm, up against the might of Emmerdale, The One Show and Channel 4 News - my guess it will fail after a few weeks, unless they can attract a loyal audience at 7pm.

Talk about being negative.

Andrew Neil is widely acknowledged as the best political interviewer around right now.

I can’t see him suddenly becoming a failure overnight.

BBC News: Presenters, correspondent & rotas

Have to admit though that it's easier to tell that Nuala (and Sarah from BBC Sport) are Irish to most viewers, whereas Annita and Maxine have more of an English accent so can't really tell they're Irish straight away.

You have to be kidding me. Annita and Maxine have very distinctive Northern Irish accents - not remotely English.

Not kidding, i didn’t know they were irish until i read it up online, before that i could not tell they were. Not everyone can instantly tell where someone is from based on accent, especially for those who don’t travel that much in the world to know the difference. Smile

I’ll just hope that you are from not from GB so.

Take it from me, saying to anyone from Ireland or Northern Ireland (or indeed Wales or Scotland) that they have an English accent is not likely to go down well at all!!

Given the level of news coverage that NI has received over the years (most of it sadly not positive), I would have said that the NI accent would be one of the more widely recognised.

BBC News: Presenters, correspondent & rotas

I have to say Nuala McGovern is doing great here on Newsday. It is very rare for me to see an Irish newsreader on the BBC.

Annita McVeigh is Irish. As was Maxine Mawhinney.

The RTE News Thread

RTÉ do cut back News at one. It's put in the second studio and cut by 10 minutes.

They meant the News at One on Radio One.

The RTE News Thread

Genuinely I think that with staff leave commitments and all of the politicians off, the ability to deliver the full six:one bulletin is an issue during the high summer.

BBC can fill out bulletins with international stories with their range of correspondents which is an option RTÉ don’t have.

Virgin Media are basically delivering the same 30 minute bulletin several times - that’s hardly comparable to the 6:01.

I’ve said it before - I really don’t see the market for a BBC Breakfast style tv programme here - radio is king and that’s something quite Irish to be honest.

The RTE News Thread

22nd of July is early. At least there's still a bulletin at 1, it disappeared entirely the first year or two it was on (if my memory is correct) Back in the 80's the bulletins were shortened for 3 months and more, Newsnight used to disappear off of RTE 2 for months as well. After all, there was no international news between June and August. Shocked

RTE One must love "Reeling in the Years" programme they made. The programme is their go to filler for the Six-One News every day during the summer cut back season.

6.30pm - You can nearly 100% guarantee Reeling in the Years will air throughout August. So instead of world news and national news, we get archive RTE clips of events edited together for a specific year, with no narrator, just on screen captions.

Interesting they don't cut back Morning Ireland on RTE Radio 1 during the summer or their News at One. Someone once said radio still takes precedence over television in terms of news coverage on RTE, and to be honest, I think they are right.

Also, do Virgin Media One and Two cut back their news programming over the same summer season?

It was me who said that radio is more viewed as more important here in Ireland, and the numbers don’t argue with that being honest. Morning Ireland wipes the floor with everyone. Radio is also cheaper and easier to produce than tv - a telephone interview is simple.

You’ve got to remember a number of things:

1) RTÉ News budget is constantly under pressure and they need to save money

2) The Dáil is now in recess and the courts will rose shortly

3) RTÉ doesn’t have the numbers of correspondents that the BBC does and that does impact on them in terms of cover during the main annual leave period and they certainly don’t have the range of international corespondents to provide stories.

Realistically you’re losing the longer interview, the regional roundup and probably two full reports in the 6:01.

Virgin Media only do half-hour evening bulletins - that’s still doable.
