BBC to move more roles outwith London

The one thing about this that makes absolutely no sense to me at all is moving the World Service Business Unit to Salford. Because London is the home of the LSE, and is the major business centre in the UK. Moving the Business Unit to Salford just seems dumb.

Also, moving Radio 3 to Salford seems a little weird. Why not do what they're doing with other radio stations and having parts of the output produced in other regions and nations.

Yes the business unit to Salford is a bit of an odd choice but then does it really matter where they go? It's not as if the CEOs of companies or others they have on as guests ever come into the studio in W1 now. Could really be anywhere.

Also consider that a lot of its output is on 5 Live and Breakfast, both Salford based. I'm not sure where Wake Up To Money comes from nowadays, think its Salford.

Radio 3 there is a bit of an odd one. They never said that it's moving totally to Salford, like 6 Music it'll be based there, there'll still be a lot of programmes coming from London.

Salford does seem an odd choice until you remember that the Philharmonic are based there so it isn't as random as it sounds at firsf

Is it not only the BBC World Service radio business that is moving to Salford, not the entire business unit, as you’re implying, which frankly makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Coronavirus | Television News Coverage

God I won’t miss this at all.
The BBC One silence - the 1600 and briefing and the 2200.... I’d call that planning and not a ‘silly’ decision...

Well said - and if I don’t have a chance again, thank you for all the interesting information that you’ve shared with us over the years. It has been very much appreciated.

The BBC World News Thread

Back to Jane hill in E now.
As a result, world went to a break at 4:51pm, can’t imagine they usually do that? Will that not mess up the TOTH as there is usually a break just before then.

That’s perfectly normal for the 16:00 hour on World.

There’s a short filler from Click, Witness History or the likes as well as a weather forecast in that period to the TOTH.

Who does the 12.00 cet news bulletin now that it has replaced the second hour of simulcast? Is it Yalda who usually takes over at 13.00 cet?

It would be easier if you asked the question using GB times as it starts getting confusing for people otherwise.

The 11:00 BST bulletin was presented by Lucy Hockings.

There are two shifts now where previously there was one.

New Newsnight Studio

AlexS posted:
On the topic of what happens if bbc Persian tv wants to stay on air longer due to breaking news, can’t newsnight just be moved into E for that night?

That wouldn't work for several reasons, not least because it'd be totally inappropriate for Newsnight to be delayed at short notice on the biggest news days of the year. BBC Persia managed without access to 54D for several months at the end of last year and beginning of this due to refurbishment if Wikipedia is to believed so it's not as though they don't have options available to them.

Not once the schedule reverts to it starting at 10.30.

Could Persian use 44D, where it was for a while during 54D's refit? Or Newsnight from A?

Depends on the story, no? What if it's Persian's biggest story of the year?

Persian moved into 44D while 54D was upgraded to HD and MOSart. They were the only user of that studio at the time (Arabic having done their "pure 44D stint" before that, then moving into 34D permanently) so this issue wouldn't have occurred - breaking news would have been happily accommodated in 44D. However 44D is now mothballed, is the only BH studio in SD, and the latest plan I heard was to convert it back into office space.

Given that 22:30 in the UK is currently 01:00
in Tehran, and will be 02:00 from the 25th of October, I can’t imagine that BBC Persian will need the studio being honest about it.

New Newsnight Studio

If they're no longer sharing News at Ten's studio, why haven't they gone back to their usual 10.30 timeslot?

It is moving back according to the twitter feed for the programme.

I like it. Moving to a different studio during a pandemic is tough, and the fact that nothing about that set told me it wasn't designed for Newsnight says a lot about how well they’ve done. There are tweaks that can (and no doubt will) be made both as they spend more time in the space and as COVID restrictions eventually (hopefully) ease, but I thought it was the perfect fit for Newsnight. The ceiling is a bit low, but the set appears so vast and it’s lit so darkly that you don’t notice the ceiling unless you’re looking for it. I’ve never been much of a fan of how big the ceiling (and general set) was in studio B - it made people seem very small on wide shots, and was otherwise a pretty empty space. Outside of elections, Derbyshire’s occasional in-studio audience and musical guests on Marr, the vast majority of the space in B was never used for anything at all. For the amount of space it takes up, it’s actually a little baffling to justify.

This studio is a balance between intimate and large, has plenty of space for multiple presentation areas, and can be surprisingly well lit for a converted office space. This isn’t an N8 situation, and they’ve far more space than the Salford set Breakfast use has. I like it, and wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Marr move there (even if that means juggling the WS channels’ studio allocations on a Sunday).

Yeah but studio B was also used by BBC World News with Impact, Live with ..., Global in the good old days, all gone now.

Don’t forget Talking Business - Aaron Heslehurst used the floor space in B to the max!

Vicki Young appointed BBC’s new Deputy Political Editor

Norman also had a contribution to the Today programme, and reported each day on the Six O’Clock News on Radio 4 - people seem to be forgetting the radio element to the role as well.

BBC News (UK) presentation - Reith launch onwards

The headlines are on both channels at 21:30.

World News cuts away just before the presenter continues on the News Channel with a mention of the 22:00 news and an introduction to whatever programme is on at 21:30.

It’s very slick as opposed to the pauses at other junctions.

It’s similar to what happens on the overnights when they both have headlines at the half hour.

BBC News: Presenters, correspondent & rotas

Another departure! they are definitely all dropping like flies at the moment!

Well presumably there will be a reasonable number of staff taking the voluntary redundancy package - as I said before people view life differently as they get older, and frankly who can blame them.

Jonathan Marcus is certainly a big loss to the World Service & World News - he was an excellent analyst.

BBC News at One / Six or Ten to be axed?

We get BBC World Service (Europe) in the UK, check on BBC Sounds what stream your getting as there are ten different versions in English ( East and South Africa; West and Central Africa; Europe and Middle East; Americas and Caribbean; East Asia; South Asia; Australasia; United Kingdom/Ireland)

There is one global “online” stream available via BBC IPlayer Radio for us outside the UK - all the rest of the streams you list are available locally via Short Wave, or rebroadcast on FM in the various countries, local rebroadcasts online or indeed via alternative apps such as tune in etc.

If you go for example to https://www.bbc.com/persian/media-45679210 you get Persian, or go to the bottom of this page https://www.bbc.com/schedules/p02y9rvj you can change the service to regions and listen live. The WS has ten different streams in English online, but default is online, its the same with BBC One which is default to London

I do know all that - I’ve listened to the World Service every day for over thirty years! Smile

We are kind of going around in circles here.

To listen to the other alternative schedules from the default online one, you do have to actively search for the different variations, which I very much doubt “radiolistener” did.

That online schedule is not dominated by documentaries about Africa as they suggested.

Even on the Africa feed, it’s only at certain limited times that special programmes about Africa, such as “Focus on Africa” are broadcast (the real version which is 60 years old this year). It certainly isn’t all day long.
