RTS Television Journalism Awards 2009/2010

House posted:
News Channel Award goes to Sky News.

Urgh. Sorry, but... urgh.

While Sky News may not be what it once was, 2010 was quite a year for the channel in my view. They had an election debate along with a strong election coverage, their record audience, the HD channel launch to name a few.

Sky's Branding

Not a huge issue for me but there might be a few complaints about the size of the Sky Atlantic DOG.

The 'Let The Stories Begin' preview programme is very well produced.

Sky's Branding

Considering it is supposed to be a 'special' and 'extraordinary' channel I hope the Sky Atlantic presentation has more of a premium feel and style to the Sky 1/Living presentation style.

Andrew Wilson on the ground for Sky

Andrew always much more impressive on location that in the studio.

Agree with you on that one. He also seems to be Sky's default on location presenter these days, similar I suppose to Tim Wilcox on the BBC.

Sky News: Presentation Discussion

the Egypt crisis

Anyone else feel that the significance of this story to the UK is not sufficient for the amount of coverage Sky has given it today? Wouldn't mind but they are looping the same pictures, speaking to the same correspondents...

I think the story is definitely worthy of the time they are giving it (think I am right in saying it is the only story covered since lunchtime) and while it would be nice if there was a greater variety of pictures I suspect there are all sorts of difficulties in getting pictures out of the region (although admittedly AJE have managed to broadcast some extraordinary live images).

Sky's Branding

Lots of examples of the new Sky1, Sky Living and Sky Arts logos in use in the presentation that Jeremy Darroch gave to Sky shareholders this morning,

The Sport Thread

Barney Francis has made some big calls in the last few days (all the right ones in my opinion) but the biggest test now will be to find the right people and put together a strong new team to replace Keys and Gray. I suspect in the short term they will rotate the presenters in the same way they rotate commentators, perhaps with Jeff Stelling presenting the big Super Sunday matches.

The Sport Thread

Doesn't have a prolonged future, if any with SS now, in my view, it'd be interesting to know when his contract expires.

Don't know about Keys but the Daily Mail reported that Andy Gray's contract ran until the end of the 2012/13.

Sky News: Presentation Discussion

The Guardian reports that while News Corp are willing to make concessions on Sky News, they are not willing to see it sold. Apparently News Corp's proposal for an editorial board would see the board have the right to veto the appointment and dismissal of the Head of Sky News (John Ryley)
