How Would You Restore Sky News?

i really don't see how moving the presenters around the studio will enhance viewing figures. They did that at first when they were showing off their new toy, there is no need for that anymore.

So how does sitting them behind a desk all day increase ratings then?

It doesn't but the BskyB management were desperate to launch HD services and so money had to be saved. I suspect that the desk presentation came about as a way of reducing staff at sky centre who are on the studio floor etc or as a practicality of having fewer people.

I would agree that content needs to drastically improve. I am suprised thy have not even had a package on the Somalian troubles. With an award-winning journalist such as Emma Hurd based as the Africa reporter you would have thought....

I would not personally change the schedule that much, I would use better content and get use sky news 2pm-5pm as a slot with more international stories etc as well as domestic news. I would keep sky news with martin at 8, I think that te 7pm slot needs to kept free for news really - but thats just my opinion. I would actually quite like to see global news updates from some of the sky news offices around the world incorporated into Live at 5 and 6pm-8pm. This could take the form of a report, or a live summary of key events fo interest from that region.

This was originally mentioned on TV Newsroom Forums but I thought I may aswell mention it here.

On Wikipedia it says that Emma and Steve are getting married:
"It has been announced to sources at Sky News close to Emma Crosby and Steve Dixon that they have recently got engaged and are planning in getting married in late 2007"

Hmmm... I'm not so sure having heard one particular story. Plus, this has come from wikipedia - so doubt it's true.

I would be inclined to think there is some truth in it. Some of the looks they give each other and the things they say to each other I really can't see why they wouldn't be a couple.

For example the other week, Steve was talking about Emma and her alcopops and again on the 23rd Emma askeds Steve whether he had finished his Christmas shopping and said that he still had to go to some hotel shop - similing at Emma

I really like the Report in Review titles this year after I caught about 10 seconds of them last night, but having said that I would probably still prefer last years

Please dont tell me you watch Sky News on Christmas Day.

Just what I thought. Sod the presents, family and turkey - there's a log of presenter rotas to be kept up to date!

Prehaps my sarcasm wasn't as evident as I would have liked it to be. Although i do quite like your sentiment of sodding the in-laws.

I may post on this forum but it doesn't make me sad enough to keep a log of presenters

So newsreaders are redundant in many respects then?

I just feel that graphics coming out of the reporters' ears on VTs is not appropriate, and that the money would be far better spent improving quality of news and training journalists rather than adding tacky garb onto the screen.

Please give an example of when this has occured. As I can see this has never happened on sky news - if it is to that which you are refering.

I don't tend to comment on mocks on here that often, but this has to be the most original work I have seen in some time. I was thinking earlier that Sky News has lost some gravitas in recent years.

Any chance of you doing any more work on this? I really like thge ideas here and style but am struggling after looking at it more closly to see how it good it would look with a sunrsie type format.

And I actually think that the short for atv plugs too close to the 'newsroom plebs' for most presenters would work well for a sky news today program - as you have the shot of the newsroom in the background below. If you have time it would be great to see a video?!? Laughing

God this takes me back somewhat. I love it though, classy sophistcated just what the channel needs.

Just one questio though would this be the extent of the studio? i.e. would there be a soft-area for Sunrise or martin Stanford or could one be set up in front of that newswall thing?

Love the graphics though, and the countdown

Whats with the 'Suffolk Killer' thing between live feeds. It looks dreadful, and I just can't help but feel that they've gone to far with this one.

Rather humbling to see Jeremy go all the way to 11pm last night from 5 and Julie do the entire day Sunrise, and snt.

Tell you what though, you definitely know when they're desperate as they send Dame kay herself out. Laughing Only joking; i have actually quite liked her today and always prefer her doing this on location stuff than in the studio.

I had to laugh the other day when she broke the tornado story. She said something along the lines of..

'So then to go back over our breaking news here on Lunchtime Live with me KAY BURLEY as I know alot of you tune to sky news FIRST FOR BREAKING NEWS ...' So bloody in your face it was un believable

Sky's coverage has been great and ahead of BBC's.

Not much credit considering the story's a non-starter.

It's just another excuse for all of the climate change sh it to come out.

Sky have been very good actually quickly getting rid of any connection between climte change etc, and at least sky havn't got a 1/2 hour special programme looking back at today's coverage as it happened in case you missed it all Rolling Eyes

to be fair just because you don't personally care about some of the new they break, doesn't mean it's not news. i'm not pointing the finger at you here this is just another point, but to some 'news snobs', if it's not politics, famin, or war, then it's not 'real' news.

my only gripe is using the actual breaking news strap for everything. they should use the blue ones. they're nice and calm, and make teh breaking news ones stand out.

I'd rather they tell me everything, and then as a viewer I'll make up my mind as to whether its worth me listening in or not. I'd rather be treated with respect than people like the BBC assuming that i won't want to know
