Coverage of Russian Siege

Interesting to see CNN rebroadcasting ITV. Can't help but think that as good as BBC News' coverage is, they need to get their cameras inside the school itself if they're not going to have to use "ITV pictures" or "Sky pictures" astons over their reports later.

Well I didnt really want to break that news on here - but it is remarkable that they are.........

At the back of my mind I can't help but think that the world's biggest broadcast newsgathering organisation is now in second gear, with the commercial rival flooring it in first.

News 24 Breaks into BBC One

Just spotted this too. Leaving ITV as the only terrestrial channel carrying this. No on-screen reports at all on BBC1 now... Never thought I'd see the day Sad

Coverage of Russian Siege

News 24 now simulcasting with World. Perhaps not a tremendous surprise, I wonder what'll happen at 1pm. I guess they're winding up to a long News Special at this rate.

Terrible pictures, it's almost like a war zone there.

BBC News Thread

One, possibly, for the BBC people here...

Occasionally, if there is a breaking news item when BBC1 News is on air, they will cut to a live interview with a journalist somewhere in the News Centre.

With this being done at least a couple of times in the past week, I've been looking at the backdrop perhaps a little too much for sanity.

I did the TVC tour in March '02, and at the time there was a news viewing area just outside the News Centre. It was laid out like a conference room, and the glass wall have a clear view into what I recall was the first floor of TVC (we'd gone up one flight of stairs). It was apparently one floor down and a few desks away from the News 24 area.

I could be putting 2 and 2 together and making 67, but...

Is this area the same as BBC1 use for "News Centre" lives?

In the RT News50 feature, there's a pic of Richard Sambrook on the stairs. This area seems to be over his right shoulder, in the centre-left of the picture - and News 24 would be behind him, in the top-right of the picture?

I'll get me coat Smile

Iraq handover coverage

Ok, so despite this story breaking several hours ago, R1 carrying it at 0830, and News 24 using the BN banner at 0900, Breakfast had nothing from when I switched on at 0850. WTF?!?!

I'm surprised N24 weren't simulcasting World TBH

A "different" question....

During BBC1/News 24 simulcasts, does News 24 have the ability to put out different "screen furniture" i.e. graphics?

I'm thinking 2 things here:

- One thing that would dramatically improve the perception of Breakfast almost overnight, would be to adopt the News 24 graphics, notably the Breaking News banner and ticker.

- If major news breaks during simulcasts, lets take this new Saturday morning sport thingie as one example, what happens? After all, viewers to News 24 rightly expect to have the news covered "whenever it happens" (as per advertising) although BBC1 viewers may get a tiny bit annoyed if "BREAKING NEWS" is plastered all over what looks like a light-hearted sports prog.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I for one would have a much better perception of various N24 simulcasts if at least News 24 carried its own graphics set - and was therefore able to properly handle breaking stories - 24/7.

This may have been posted already (in which case apologies), but good to see that "in the know" does carry the graphics on News 24. Only Breakfast left now and we should pretty much be there....

Yet Breakfast at weekends carries the full TOG graphics set. So why not weekdays? At least we'd stop complaining Smile

Election 2004

News 24/BBC2 still have that very odd TOG, but at least they're using the ticker this time round, and seem to have more "lives" from the counts - a move in the right direction.

The panel and Peter Snow's graphics, once again, excellent

EDIT: Much better use of graphics when results are being announced,

Election 2004

The coverage itself did seem pretty good - the size of the studio, the panel guests, Andy Marr etc..

But yet again it's the graphics used on a simulcast that let News 24 down. We were told at relaunch that one of the big things with the "new" N24 would be graphics that let the channel SHOUT about breaking news, being adaptable to suit different circumstances etc.

All this is fine and dandy.... except for 2 things:

- Simulcasts. It seems N24 goes to pot from a graphics side. A good move to start using TOG-style graphics, and this has to be promising from a Breakfast perspective. But, Sky & ITVs on-air graphics last night put the BBC to shame - and anyone flicking channels could be forgiven for having a better "first impression".

EDIT: N24 have a good ticker up now - why on earth don't they use this more??

- Breaking News. The aston goes up for a few seconds then gets taken down. N24 may have broken the news first, but someone who was looking away for those few seconds, wouldn't know. Last night was a prime example - I counted several alerts that didn't even last 10 seconds.

Here's hoping they learn from this in time for Sunday Confused:

Was that a "LABOUR HOLD" graphic in TOG-style "BREAKING NEWS" style I just spotted?

Yep, TOG graphics getting used now. About time too!!

Nope, it was clearly a one-off. Shame. As others have said, the coverage from a presentational point of view is disappointing so far.

EDIT: The occasional TOG graphic is coming up, but typically for News 24 is being removed almost immediately. I'd love to know the reason behind this.
