BBC News (UK) presentation - Reith launch onwards

I really don’t understand why people are so negative and hateful about VD and whether she presents it enough for it to bare her name.

1. She was seriously ill for a while and did diaries for the show, so give her some slack. I don’t remember anyone giving other presenters (who they like) the same amount of criticism.
2. The BBC obviously thought they can’t compete for ratings in certain demographics at that time due to fierce competition, so they produce a programme outside of their comfort zone. I think they should be doing this sort of thing. Outside Source is similar but again people don’t complain here about that because it’s a “serious” show.
3. It and the new graphics don’t quite match up but these are teething problems that only come out on screen. The BBC will fix them, just be patient.

The BBC is there to serve all audiences (certain non-news decisions aside). It’s role is to innovate in programming styles. I don’t see people complaining about shows co hosted from two different parts of the globe, yet the BBC have two. Broadcasters all around the world look up to the BBC. It may not make programmes suitable for everybody but then again who does these days? No broadcaster can expect to please everyone so pay offs are made.

BBC News (UK) presentation - Reith launch onwards

I think these are a good set of graphics for BBC News. I remember liking the look back in 2007, which came back when they switched to NBH. All the lower thirds mind you. But in the 00’s there was a refresh once a year, which clearly can’t be sustained now and obviously a minor refresh took place in March 2013 with the move to NBH to benefit from the newsroom view and camera that only Studio E can use.

I think this is a good refresh to the channel and they’ve obviously had done a lot of work for this refresh. There might be some bugs but this is normal and the BBC will iron those out over time. It might just be that these could only come out in production, rather than during testing.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Well they can't exactly have 2 News at Nines on the News Channel can they (since the one at 9:00am has launched since the last clock change.)

This is true. Also, the back half hour of WNA could be relevant to some who are interested. Now it’s the usual OS broadcast for the whole hour. Maybe this could be more permanent? I suspect though the US schedule is fixed.

BBC World/BBC News - Technical Issues Again??

I suspect for the 10 they didn’t want a repeat of June 2017 when the system failed just before the 10 and News Channel viewers got 4 minutes of Huw twiddling his thumbs waiting for the go from the gallery. After every headline the Breaking News graphic would appear with sound effect. Fortunatey it happened just before the end of the day, when they could switch over to World News an hour earlier, leaving Rico to give a special welcome to UK viewers. It’s not good if your flagship programme is affected by technical problems. Fortunately, it’s not happened often, I can only remember one other major system failure at NBH, which resulted in Focus on Africa coming from the top of the newsroom where guests have interviews with a studio (other programmes were affected).

BBC World News | 30th October 2017 Onwards

Could you imagine Rico Hizon and Aaron Hesulhurst presenting together?

Also, to confuse us viewers, Rico Hizon has popped up in London to present Newsday. At least he hasn’t done a Babita Sharma and got the location wrong! I wonder if Rico and Babita will be in the same studio again but in London, unless she’s replacing him in Singapore.

Babita Sharma is now in the air conditioned studio with Rico Hizon both presenting Newsday from Singapore. Maybe she can present with Kasia Madeira in London together now? It was said when she presented last alone from Singapore, especially when she got confused about where she was.

Is it just for the summit or are we getting a time check from Singapore at the start of the programme now when the presenter reads out the headlines?

If you’ve said the same thing four or five nights a week for the last however many years Babita has been presenting Newsday, and then all of a sudden you have to say something else, you’re bound to slip up occasionally. I still write 19__ on cheques every so often

She had no issues the previous Friday. As she said it was an early Monday morning. Both presenters recovered well and laughed about it afterwards.

BBC News Channel Presentation - 21/03/16 onwards

News Channel is skipping the BBC News at One and joining BBC World for the Impact programming, on the Syria Conflict issue. I believe this is the first time Impact has ever been broadcast on the NC as a simulcast and I hope NC continues simulcasting it (as they could just run a delayed BBC News at One after it).

There is a news conference from the Russia Ambassador to the UK taking place.(hence the simulcast)

I think it’s also because of a major story. Matthew Price is currently in Beirut on location and both channels have been simulcasting him on location at the top of the hour.

They just played the later part of the titles (with the Mishal V/O) and went straight to the presenters. They've gone flat out on the Trump-Kim Jong Un meeting, so I guess it would have been pointless to do the headlines.

They always do that if presentation isn't being shared from Singapore and London, either because one is closed or one of them is in another location like Washington for example.

It went straight from the countdown to titles to Kasia and Rico. No headlines whatsoever.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Why does the BBCNC TOTH countdown in the midnight does not sync with the BBCWN TOTH countdown during overnight simulcasts? As you can see in the opening sequence video below, the BBCWN countdown sequence is 2 seconds late:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8otovVZOac

They are two separate channels with their own galleries, I presume. And since BBCWN has adverts in between programming and the like, BBCNC has to wait until they can join World. It's not really joining in "late" or "early" (technical cockups notwithstanding) but waiting for their cue to join. (e.g. of that: BBC Two was kept on standby for 5 minutes with a static "BBC Two" Bounce ident until it could join with BBC One to form "BBC Television News" and announce the Queen Mother's passing some years back). That's why some countdowns are shorter or longer and can air sans a clock to fill time.

Strange as I always got the impression, watching the News Channel in the UK, that the News Channel was joining BBC World each time when, I am now aware, it is actually the other way around. Another example in life when things are not quite what they seem...

A similar thing can happen (with out-of-sync countdowns) when BBC One joins the News Channel at exactly 1am - BBC One (in England, and presumably occasionally at those or other times in Scotland/NI if they ever do a similar thing) sometimes has its own countdown running until the actual join - this being when there is more time to go until 1am but the countdown on the News Channel has not yet appeared - BBC One, being a split second out of sync, then joins at 1am but invariably messes up slightly and you see the people outside the screen of Broadcasting House moving back by a second or so as it switches from BBC One's own display of its own extended copy of countdown to the News Channel immediately before the presenter appears on air (and then, I now understand, appears on World News a second or so later than that).

The News Channel does join World News overnight (I believe World News funds it and the programmes are World News programmes broadcast in the UK). All that is happening is that as World News has playout outside of NBH and the News Channel doesn’t, is that the World News team in Gallery C are providing everything for the News Channel overnIght. Gallery C is providing a regular News Channel service ‘out of hours’, which it was agreed that World News should use when they join up.
