Thames Valley Tonight/Today

The last time I looked, it was Mary Green Mon-Thu and Hannah Shellswell on Fris. Yes, it is a better programme than Meridian West - not hard, though, really!

Yep. Don't forget Keith Butler as well, currently at Capital Gold.

New Meridian, BBC South & South East Thread

Maybe its something to do with the newsroom being away from the studio but even still that was introduced when Phil and Charlotte were there.

Yes, the newsroom being around 100 miles away from the studio doesn't help at all. But Thames Valley's newsroom is over 60 miles away from Whiteley, yet TVT seems to breeze along nicely compared to Meridian South East.

Makes you yearn for the days of Mike Debens! Very Happy

Thames Valley Tonight/Today

Started a new thread for this as the old one's archived.

Don't usually catch the weekend bulletins, but was pleasantly surprised to see Mark Lipscombe doing Sunday evening's TVT. I realise he used to do weekend bulletins at Abingdon, but is he a regular at Whiteley now, or does he just cover?

Thames Valley T0-Day

Oh I dunno: the sharp intakes of breath seem to make the news delivery that bit more dramatic and pacey. Remember, this is Thames Valley we're talking about, where one story about a cannabis farm raid in Oxford or a mugging in Reading, sounds like any other. Wesley rules!

Oh, this little chap seems lost - hello!

Poor analogue cable reception

Quote:
Here In Dublin it works like that .

They pick up the BBC,UTV,and CH4 from Divis in NI and rebroadcast them on VHF Band III frequencies for the most part.

Yep, that's pretty well how it works in the UK as well. The VHF signal is sent down the cable from the headend to the hubsites etc to the homes. The converter changes it to UHF. The UHF frequencies, however, are not the same as terrestrial.

Gemma Humphries Meridian tonight ..

Presenter says to Gemma : Gemma the weather, they still call you that?
Gemma: I don't know know you can call me what you want.

Me: Now there's an invitation. Laughing

When she tells me we're either going to shedloads of snow or 30c +i'm afraid she's gonna get called alot of unrepeatable names.

I don't like weather forecasters they always give you bad news with a smile.

Does it really matter what the weather will be like when she presents though ?!

Btw does she just 'do' the weather for the South edition of Merdian Tonight or the others also ?

Gemma does weather for South and South East during the week and sometimes Thames Valley as well at weekends if she's the Meridian forecaster 'on-shift' (Simon Parkin does weekdays for Thames Valley).

I T V Thames Valley Tonight.

Well, you could always watch London Today/Tonight/Tonight instead, as you may already do. I don't personally because there's too much of the L-word on it, but each to their own, I suppose.

TVT isn't a complete mess. Wesley Smith's extremely competent (he was back on the lunchtime bulletin today so - no - he hasn't left) and Simon Parkin makes a decent weather presenter (is he the first weatherman not to wear a tie regularly btw?). But Chris Maughan and David Reilly are no Wesley stand-ins, but are reasonable on the Sport, as is Victoria Bennett. Mary Green's bearable: she's better than she was on Meridian Tonight, although I put that down to the Wesley effect. Unlike Hannah Shellswell, who I find hugely irritating.

In the case of Meridian Tonight being "poor" - yes, I agree with you regarding the old West edition and, as has been discussed already on the South/South East thread, recently the South East edition, too. The South edition, however, is still very professional, with two of the longest-serving regional presenters on there. And, without the faux chumminess of South Today.

....what about UTV/STV - did they get a nice ITV1 logo on screen for then to enjoy?

I doubt it.

If ITV can't be botherered having live continuity presenters then there is no reason why they can't have a pre-recorded group of messages which can be played out under different circumstances.

Years ago the main channels would never go more than about 10 secs without a CA coming on to explain. It shouldn't really be much different now.

Er, it wasn't - there were frequent apologies from the announcer (who believe it or not is live from 9.25 through to around 2330/0000!).

Yep - quite correct - although the anno was quiet against the sound level of the music.
