Eurovision 2021 - Netherlands - NPO/AVROTROS/NOS

Looks like tomorrow (EDIT: no, today!) is the day we find out what Eurovision will look like this year.

A is certainly out of the question and probably B as well. I think they'll announce C and drop to D at a later date if necessary. I can imagine any audience that is there will be entirely local and will probably have free tickets given how heavily policed they'll have to be and it makes it easier to cancel them should they need to.

I think whatever scenario they go for Australia probably won't be performing in the Netherlands!

EDIT: They've announced it - pursuing B surprisingly but will potentially downsize as they go on: https://eurovision.tv/story/eurovision-2021-determined-yet-realistic-plans-for-may

(ITV) Merit

The channel only existed so that Sky could buy it.

More like so that anyone could buy it.

Very unlikely, the whole thing almost certainly happened with Sky on board long before Merit actually launched.

As a broadcaster they will have to adhere to Ofcom regs regarding fairness and due impartiality - which does begs the question how is it that RT still has a licence?

Ofcom have been extremely lenient towards RT, even if they've fined them or have given them a strong slap on the wrist for the lies and propaganda they've broadcast over the years.

I've always assumed (and this really is based on nothing other than assumption) that they give it leniency to avoid any retaliations against the BBC's Russian services. Given how utterly minimal RT's impact has been in the UK it's a small price to pay.

The Masked Singer UK...2021

Robin: That "Diversity" clue has been in the back of my mind. From BGT? Was shy? Was in a boyband?

I'm still convinced this is Aston Merrygold so I guess the Diversity clues could be in relation to him being a judge on Got To Dance alongside Ashley Banjo (presumably performing alongside Diversity at some point in the series). Also he was wearing 3D glasses at one point which could related to the final being shown on Sky 3D although that would be niche even for the Masked Singer!

I can't not hear Sue Perkins now it's been said on here for Dragon. That medieval banquet surely a reference to the Supersizers series she did with Giles Coren.

Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow

Not surprised Name that Tune is there as that's a Fremantle format.

Actually it isn't, although Fremantle has had the option for it at various points in history and have optioned it for this. I believe it still owned by the family of the man who created it. This is why the current American version isn't made by Fremantle and the Bill Bailey pilot wasn't either.

Who made the Bill Bailey pilot?

IIRC it was September Films who made Celebrity Squares.

Paramount Network to rebrand

I think CBS and Viacom have really overestimated the power of the Paramount brand, and also what viewers associate it with, and they seem to be making the same mistake with Paramount+ being used as their upcoming On Demand brand. All Access could at least complement local brands quite easily, Paramount sits awkwardly alongside them. I think if the channel especially was movie focused it would be fine and meet viewers expectations, but it feels like CBS/Viacom are just making use of a brand they have for the sake of it rather than utilising the brand to it's best ability.

I agree that on paper Paramount isn't quite as prestigious as they might think it is, but I think all that takes is a bit of fancy marketing and decent originals over time to make it feel like a more premium brand. It's a better name than Peacock at least.

I don't think CBS All Access was a strong brand at all, nothing about it says streaming service, and I think that's one of the key reasons why they've failed to make an impact on the streaming market despite having a six year head start.

GOLD coming to Freeview?

Does it even have any content worthy of UKTV transferring over to other channels?

To be fair, The Bold and the Beautiful could easily be put on W, considering it's female-skewing audience.

Considering it barely manages 15k viewers on CCX I doubt they'll be that keen on bringing it over to W.

Paramount+

It very much seems to be a rebrand of CBS All Access with not too much more than what's already on there. Interesting that they're still not including Showtime in this, you'd think that would've made it more competitive with HBO Max. It's pretty unfortunate that they were really ahead of the curve by launching this in 2014, long before the recent streaming wars, and yet it doesn't appear to have made much of an impact, other than Star Trek. That rubbish name probably didn't help, Paramount+ is much better.

The Wheel

But prize money usually doesn't come from the actual programme budget. That comes from a central channel pot for prizes. Obviously, if he was giving away £70,000 per show, it wouldn't get recommissioned.

It's why pretty much every show these days has to have the possibillity that the show winner can leave with nothing, even if that means answering every question correctly, and putting thousands into the 'bank' to aim for to win.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure all game shows do have prize money as a line in the programme budget. Although it's a variable based on the performance of contestants, they'll calculate a win/lose ratio and the series prize money budget will be agreed based on that. I think they use that for insurance as well if it all goes wrong and they end up giving too much away.

People might moan about prize money being high but that's only because it's the one element of the show that you actually know the price of. The excitement of seeing someone winning a life changing amount of money is just as valid an experience taken from an entertainment show as... I don't know, being dazzled by a celebrity's outfit, for example. You just don't know how much that outfit cost. Chances are it's more than the prize money!
You give a set amount of money for 6 X 60" - its up to the prod company how its spent.
Its a very expensive set and decent prizes so I would imagine Mr Mac's company has broken even to get it recommissioned and produced.

No, the production company would have given the BBC a very detailed budget on exactly how much is spent on every single element of the show before production begins. After plenty of back and forth the BBC would have eventually signed that budget off. The production fee (i.e. profit) is a percentage of the total budget of the programme that is added on to the overall cost of the show. It's important that the BBC sign off the budget to ensure the company aren't artificially boosting figures to fraudulently increase their fee.

They won't have broken even, they'll have made a profit, otherwise they wouldn't be making the show.
