Dancing on Ice 2021

Why was Strictly Come Dancing nearly perfect with their Covid safe production compared to Dancing on Ice?

Strictly had just one case of Covid, but the rest of the production completed perfectly. We now know, ITV Covid protocols for the show, is not as stringent and enforced than Strictly was at the BBC.

No we don't know that at all. None of the other couples or crew appear to have caught it. ITV can't police them 24 hours a day and it's much more likely he caught it away from set.

Caught it from Rufus did he?

Doubt it, it's been over 3 weeks since he was on set and they won't have come into contact anyway.

Freeview and Freesat to merge

It does also open the doors for hybrid receivers, which could show a single guide picking up some services terrestrially and others via satellite depending on what's the best option/quality for each channel.

I've actually got a 150 quid LG 24inch telly that has both Freeview and Freesat built in (and all the popular non linear services). It's clearly designed to be used routinely on one platform, or the other, because switching between to the two modes is a cumbersome task. Future models will hopefully combine both platforms into a single EPG

It's the same on my Samsung TV. You certainly have to know where the switching option is, it's somewhat hidden away and requires a few too many clicks.

Memories of Regional Programmes

I remember Granada's last few years of obligated regional shows were deathly dull, seriously phoned in programmes. One I distinctly remember was The Real Coronation Street about the residents of some Greater Manchester street with the same name. One of the key storylines of the episode I watched was about how a mother and her daughter would do the weekly shop, bring it back to the house in the trolley and then the daughter would take the trolley back to the supermarket.

And then their Thursday 7:30 regional slot was often filled with loads and loads of archive shows about old regional series and quirky news reports. I think there were so many series of them that they were really scraping the barrel for clips by the end but it must have been by far the cheapest way to fill that quota.

That quiz show at the start, why was it called 'Do I Not KNOW That?'? Is that some famous football phrase or pun or something? Such a random name otherwise.

Coronavirus - Impact on live/recorded shows

Am I the only one who liked it? I've only seen one episode and it is extremely (almost unbelievably) simple but I actually found the game itself very playalong-able and liked Adil as host.

Wow, series 13 really is the unlucky one!

News UK TV

Well the fella that owns the Made side of the local TV network and the fella that owns the London local TV franchise both own rival newspaper publishers. Can't see that happening.

Aren't the papers owned by the Made person just local papers? Can't imagine there's that much rivalry with Murdoch's national papers. The mysterious launch of Manchester TV owned by them on channel 99 seems conveniently timed for this. I agree that London Live is unlikely.

Coronavirus - Impact on live/recorded shows

If there's no audience, no mosh pit and all behind closed doors - what's the point of hiring this section of the arena? Is it purely down to having a struck set for 6 weeks?

What's the largest studio in terms of space they could have commandered at SVT?
Providing they have large producion studios, of course.

It's still a big event, why not give it a big space? The stage always looks huge when the audience are out of shot anyway so they're just maintaining the scale they normally have. It's only a 4000 capacity arena anyway, it's not like there's that much wasted space.

Further to that New Faces of '88 clip, here's the regional votes which preceded the end credits/orchestral Central jingle, featuring selected presenters from the regions:

Not every region is represented in its own right, however; so while young Queen Pammie gets her moment on the network reading out the NI votes, Richard Whiteley is delegated with announcing the vote for the 'North', seemingly merging Yorkshire, Granada, Tyne Tees and possibly Border.

Even BFBS/SSVC gets in on the action!

Yup clearly TVS covers TSW and HTV West.

Wasn't there another programme which used the regions for voting around 1999/2000 as well

Record of the Year.

RTL using an 'in programme' way of advertising their new Late Night Talkshow, "TFG" which began last week.

During their version of "I'm a Celebrity" (Ich bin ein Star!), presenter Jens „Knossi“ Knossalla walks into shot, pauses the show, tells you to stay tuned as his new show is on next, and then unpauses the show before leaving.

ASA ban "Jab&Go" Ryanair ads

It’s nothing to do with publicity and everything to do with bringing in some cash to stop them going under.

It's absolutely everything to do with publicity. It's a textbook Ryanair campaign. They've run a number of ads they've known would be banned and the endless free publicity they get when it is. It's 20 years since the infamous Mannekin Pis campaign in Belgium for example: https://marketinglaw.osborneclarke.com/marketing-techniques/ryanair-continues-rich-belgian-urinal-ad-tradition/

It was just a cheap marketing stunt to get people talking about Ryanair in my opinion...they knew exactly what they were doing

They bought spots nationally on ITV primetime...not exactly cheap.

But they're now getting a shed load of free coverage in the media on top of that now. And all the news articles and reports I've seen today explain exactly what the advert was trying to promote. So essentially the message of the ad is still going out, but this time it's on the BBC News at One.

Exactly. Much like when those stories went out about passengers having to pay for toilets or replacing seats with stand up - er - seats. They had no intention of implementing either but boy did it get them a lot of free publicity.

Add me to the list of people who has flown with them many, many times and only ever had excellent experiences with them.
