Global Radio axes all regional/local breakfast shows

So another set of local stations are set to rebrand, although interestingly this time it’s a “brand licensing agreement” instead of a buyout.

https://radiotoday.co.uk/2019/09/quidem-enters-brand-licensing-agreement-with-global/

Not too sure why they wouldn’t just sell these stations to Global because they surely lose all editorial control? 20/21 hours a day will come from London, plus all the journalists are being transferred to Global.

Obviously no idea how this works from a profit point of view, but it’s got to be attractive to both Global and the shareholders at Quidem!

In short, it allows Quidem's management to make their own profits, without doing any work. Global provides the content and sells the advertising. It's a good way of avoiding ownership dominance issues. Global already operates the model with Communicorp. It's quite commonplace in Europe with brands like NRG. Think of it like McDonalds or Pizza Hut. Chances are your local McDonalds is not owned by the multinational corporation, but is in fact a franchise arrangement with a local owner.

Sky News | General Discussion

Sky changed their graphics in 2018, so not too long ago. BBC News's prior graphics were from 2013.

This is actually laughable. Sky´s package (core graphics, ToTH and lower thirds) is from May 2015! Nothing changed in 2018 except a lowercase logo and the addition of there title cards in the same style than 2015. They even reverted back from new news wall graphics used in late 2017 to the old 2015 style of 2015. So actually even a step backwards !

It's time for Comcast to take the bull by the horns and re-brand its raft of recently purchased channels, including Euronews and Sky News. If others won't shift the old brand alignments, Comcast needs to. Cut all ties. This is embarrassing having any association with such poor quality right wing rubbish.

BBC Cymru Wales New HQ

Yes, in Carmarthen on the campus of University of Wales Trinity Saint Davids. But they still have their Llanishen operation which is moving to Central Square.

Elections 2019

Authorities in the UK would almost certainly not enforce any action on UK citizens or media organisations simply reporting exit polls elsewhere. It’s all a bit of a strange anomaly. A little like UK viewers being banned from text voting in Eurovision! My guess is that the election watchdog felt it made sense to play it safe and apply the same rule to all elections here in the UK. There is - to some extent - an argument for applying the rule across the EU. A number of exit polls are suggesting a green wave and a rise in pro EU votes, which could motivate similarly minded voters in countries yet to vote to get out and follow the trend.

BBC Scotland - the launch

The 1.1% stat was for Gaelic speakers in Scotland at the last census, according to Wikipedia.

I've read that very page, Steve, and it's very worrying.

It doesn't have critical mass now and it's hard to see how it can achieve that, even with the existence of BBC Alba, the Gaelic radio station, and the slow growth in Gaelic-speaking schools.

I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s a slow revival, but a revival nonetheless. The number of Gaelic Medium schools is increasing throughout the country, meaning thousands of kids with no recent Gaelic family connections are now fluent. The draw for parents is the excellent all-round results the schools achieve. One theory being that teaching in a bilingual environment stretches students more and helps them to learn other languages with ease. Gaelic has a future. BBC Scotland? Not so much!

BBC News Scotland | News at Nine

I'd like to see them take the opportunity to completely rethink Rep Scot. It's a tarnished brand and the ratings are slipping badly - particularly in Central Scotland. I'm not a fan of the new dual-headed dual-location STV News, but it seems to be paying-off massively for STV.

BBC Scotland should push the button and now go for it with a Scottish Six. Call it 'The SIx', present it from BBC Scotland Channel's news set. It provides a perfect platform to create a solid, standalone BBC Scotland News brand, as well as giving a much-needed profile boost to the new channel's output.

Alas, none of this will happen.

BBC 'Bias'?

If the level-headed among us aren't prepared to accept the critical failures within the BBC, it will fail to exist within a matter of years. The bias issues aren't as extreme as some critics claim, but they DO exist. Completely brushing aside any criticism is just as bad as the 'mob' baying for BBC blood.

Some easy fixes are required:

1) Stop allowing the UK Government to influence the appointment of the BBC Trust members. It's insane that the current Board is dominated by former Tory politicians.

2) Ensure greater scrutiny of senior editorial appointments. There are a number of people in newsroom management posts with seriously questionable political leanings. I actually don't believe most of the day-to-day journalists are prepared to allow personal bias to invade their professional judgement. Newsroom managers are different. They tend to come from newspaper backgrounds at the Beeb, and almost all have various political skeletons in their closets. They should never have been allowed anywhere near the BBC.

3) Stop batting away criticism. The BBC press office has got a little too pointed in its responses recently. Accept criticism, and move on.

4) Create greater devolution of license fee spend and decision making. If BBC Wales wants to create a standalone channel, like BBC Scotland, let it. It needs to find the money and spend the money how it sees fit.

5) Stop embedding a 'bias against understanding'. This sits alongside the newsroom manager newspaper background argument. The BBC is now obsessed with reporting splits, arguments and gossip. It has become a tabloid, and a shi* one at that. Get back to fact reporting and explaining.

Once they've dealt with that, you Gary McEwan, can defend them. Until then, you're on a hiding to nothing!

Question Time with Fiona Bruce

There's an open goal for a politics/psychology book right now. A lot of reactions that people have seem to be just the kinda thing that somebody on their side or their position would be expected to say, rather than any kind of informed commentary looking at data, evidence, logic etc.

It's endlessly depressing.

I agree to some point, but Question Time is definitely playing its part in creating that new culture. My guess is that the Indy company in charge has been tasked with creating 'social engagement' and 'buzz' - both of these are fine when it's entertainment, but it's incredibly dangerous when the format is current affairs. Each edition I've watched recently appears to select a target group- whether it's Brexiteers, Remainers, Pro-Indy supporters in Scotland, Labour voters, etc. The audience appears to be overwhelmingly weighted to one side of an argument, and the show focuses heavily on that one issue. The natural response from the producers is to argue that they've created balance over the whole series, but it doesn't work like that.

The simplest solution is for the BBC to take the show in-house and task the BBC News division with its production. That said, Mentorn appears to have listened to the complaints in Scotland. The new 'Debate Night' show, which is largely a Scottish version of Question Time has proved to be overwhelmingly well received in the press, on social media and among all audience groups (Left, Right, young, old, Yes, No, etc). So, the company DOES know how to fix the problem. It's clearly just not willing to on Question Time.

London Live

Grrrr. Whats so infuriating about London Live is that they have the programming. Movies/Comedies/Dramas to complete a great schedule. It doesnt have to be original productions IMO. And it shouldnt and cant be compared with a national network, mind you. And if you look at the dismal schedule of the ThatsTV and Made(Local) stations, its light years better. Its the current affairs part where the huge hole exists. The channel could potentially be amazing, but at this point the owners has just left it to flounder and die.
I could imagine the LondonLive entertainment schedule forming the spine of the semi national network. (The ThatsTV and MadeIn stations could affiliate to LondonLive for entertainment blocks) Similar to the way the Fox Network and the CW network started. That leaves the local station responsible for certain dayparts and their news programming. But thats all pie in the sky at this point. London Live still has potential, but its gone unfulfilled. I personally have always hated the name, especially since BBC used that name for its London operation a few years ago. But thats just my opinion.

I feel your pain. London Live’s potential is what makes it all so frustrating. Daytime should basically be a rolling news channel. Agreements should be signed with TFL to get it shown in stations. It should be the go-to place for news and travel. There should be live gigs and OBs galore, and all of this could be backed up with movies and repeats in the evening. It’s literally the easiest channel on the planet to make a success of.

Global Radio axes all regional/local breakfast shows

I'm not sure local radio is quite as dead as Global would have everyone believe. Where I live we have two local community radio stations nearby both of which recently gained FM and (local) DAB+ licences. The first is HCR104fm based in Huntingdon and the other is Black Cat 107 based in St Neots. In my opinion ultra local radio stations still have their place (and a more varied playlist), though when it comes to larger 'local' stations there's only really BBC local radio left.

The problem with community radio is that it's generally run by volunteers and the quality can often be shocking. A quick glance at Ofcom's monthly reports is all you need to do to understand how poor they can be. From inciting religious wars to endless swearing - the kind of issues they create would result in larger commercial licenses being revoked! Some community stations are decent, but the majority are up there with That's TV.

BBC Scotland - the launch

New channel has opening night audience of 700,000.

How does this compare to the expectations?

They didn’t state specifically what their expectations were for launch night, but in a recent report on Reporting Scotland, they said they’d be happy with around 5% share in the first six months. 13% for night one is pretty good. The key to keeping the volume will be some genuine must watch shows and a few audience grabbers. The prospect of Friday night football seems to have pleased a lot of people, so that should help.

Channel 4 headquarters in Leeds

Not as far away as Horseferry Road though.

True, although remember there already is a small commissioning team in Glasgow. This is an expansion in Scotland for C4 rather than a new arrival.
