Scottish Referendum news thread

That's rubbish. I was hoping for Vine to be bungee-jumping and dangling infront of that huge one. Forget CG, going all out on it.

How often does PQ use those sorts of areas for things like this? I know Radio 1 did their G in the Park Festival on one of those levels.

It's actually been used quite extensively over the last 2 years for Newsnight Scotland and other referendum related shows - primarily because it has a good space for a studio audience. I've always felt it was a bit wasted though. Would make a great centrepiece for a Rep Scot set.

Scottish Referendum news thread

I'm in Edinburgh. Haven't seen any OB studios other than the scaffolding platforms at Holyrood, but I have seen a number of camera crews all over the city. Spotted a crew from ETB (Basque broadcaster) a couple of times and a Japanese crew. There's definitely a bit of a media buzz in the air. As far as studios are concerned, I'd imagine we won't see many in the city. The national count centre is at Ingilston and a whole 'cow shed' is being used for media there.

To an extent, yes. Smaller though and a very striped desk!

Scottish Referendum news thread

Just had a sneak peek at the BBC Scotland election night set. It's actually not too bad. Very similar desk to the UK's atrium set. It's quite a dark set with high ceilings, a few mezzanine areas and a circular lighting rig above the desk.

Scottish Independence

Time for a reality check here. We would have the SBC. The SNP favours the Danish model so we should expect 2 main TV channels with the possibility of one or two additional TV services and possibly 3 radio services. I'd expect commercial radio and TV to follow an Austrian model which sees lots of German TV stations with opts for Austrian national news shows. There are many highly complex issues with independence. Media isn't one. Look at the Netherlands. The country completely overhauled and readvertised it's entire commercial radio sector only a few years ago. At the time the industry wanted it would be a disaster. Surprise surprise, it wasn't.

Scottish Independence

There would be a relicensing process for both TV and radio. I know many media people (particularly in radio) who are voting yes in the desperate hope that Scotland's media industry can be reinvigorated. In the last few years hundreds of people have been made redundant in Scottish radio largely due to networking from England. It's a mess.

Surprised to hear that BBC Scotland is being relegated to studio A. The network set is going to be far more impressive.

London Live

Agree on all of that. Local tv is ultimately about people, which is neither cool nor trendy, and just hasn't been understood by London Live.

While I get where you're coming from here, I don't entirely agree that local TV must be twee and un-cool. It doesn't have to be a replica of the local ITV and BBC news bulletins, with their cardigan wearing, cupcake adoring mumsy presenters. The model for more 'cool' city stations can be found across Europe. TV Brussel (Flemish) and Tele Bruxelles (French) are classic examples. News and local docs are the mainstay of the channels. They don't do gimmicks, but they are upscale and city feeling. Lots of cultural output and even a show in English for the international community on TV Brussel. That's what it should be about.

London Live could and should be upmarket, upscale 30-something. That's what London is today. It's a cosmopolitan city with a world class outlook. London Live is none of that. As stated above, there should be a lot more news. It should be pacey, energetic and really capture the buzz of the capital. There should be a great deal more cultural output and output for different international communities. (Think news in Polish, Urdu, etc)
Rijowhi, Mouseboy33 and London Lite gave kudos

Commonwealth Games - BBC coverage

Some of the transport insfrastructure and other organisational elements have been poor, but the overwhelming picture is a positive one. The city has buzzed for the entire period. There have been concerts, street parties and other events. Glaswegians have embraced the Games and it seems to have generally portrayed the city in a positive light. Having endured that article I can't help but think he is just a typically grumpy old man who may be a bit too old to cope with the workload of covering a major sporting event. His comments on para events not being for everyone is frankly discriminatory. He was pretty much implying that the para sports were getting in the way of able bodied sports. Ask people outwith the BBC if that's the case. Here in Scotland the true poster girl for the Games was 13 year Erraid Davies who won the para swimming. Rant over. Re the graphics/fonts - I thought they were great. Polished, modern and clean. - I say all of this as someone from Edinburgh who is meant to slate Glasgow!

Russia Today

Trust me. There will NOT be a Fox News in a few years. There has been a lot of media chatter that its had its day. The Murdoch clan are said to be moving their focus away from the New York Post and Fox News and placing greater corporate emphasis on WSJ. US media success used to be based on 'bums on seats' raw readership and audience numbers, but its quickly becoming more like the UK where British media brands are increasingly interested in demographics. UK radio is the best example of that with most brands now chasing the infamous '32 year old ABC1 aspirational new mum'.

Russia Today

RT had an opportunity to become a beacon of indepedent news as Al Jazeera has become. In the end it has come to represent Russia more than even Putin would want. Loud, angry, contradictory and slowly fading into irrelevance. I honestly believe state funded media has peaked. Give it a decade and there will be no RT or Fox News.

Commonwealth Games - BBC coverage

Would be interested to see some of the international broadcasters sets. Today's Reporting Scotland had a report about the international broadcast centre which is based inside the SECC. We caught a glimpse of a fairly basic looking chroma key Clyde backdrop set for Malaysian TV. Australian TV have a glass cube perched beside the entrance to the armadillo.
