How ITV works

Central, Granada, Yorkshire, Tyne Tees and Border all get transmitted/played out from Leeds and Meridian, Anglia, Wales and London all get played out from London/South Bank STC.

Is the centre the regions are played out from related to whether they belonged to Carlton or Granada pre-ITV plc? Obviously Meridian, Anglia and Central are in the "wrong" places if that's the case but maybe someone can fill us in on the history of it.

Eurovision 2011 - 10/12/14 May 2011

First time I've really watched Eurovision. So could someone explain why they are speaking English? Yet are from Germany?

Because English and French are widely spoken languages across Europe, hence why they speak English, and why they repeat it in French after.

Think they're doing it in all three languages (English, French & German) tonight aren't they, which would be a first for Eurovision? Or was that just the earlier bit...

They're not, they're just saying the odd line in German, which is far from a first. Most countries throw in a bit of their own language, and I remember that Ireland used to translate almost everything into Irish in addition to French. I'd imagine this wouldn't be tolerated any more as time is too tight in recent contests for linguistic demonstrations of national pride.

Daybreak - the launch onwards

I don't like how they totally closed the windows, what's the point of them, even in the winter the view was nice. Rolling Eyes

I have to agree, the introduction of this backdrop is a terrible idea IMO. The combination of cold lighting, purple sofa and night time backdrop introduced in September was awful and offputting but the gradual warming up of the set seems to have gone too far now.

The yellow panels and yellow lighting on the wooden backdrop contrasted nicely with the darkness outside the studio and IMO this contrast made the studio seem almost cosy (admittedly just almost). And the shots used meant that we barely got to see out the window in any case, the only times we did generally being wide shots of presenters and guests.

Although maybe not perfect, they were taking decent steps towards incorporating a view of the cold morning darkness outside into a warm inviting set. Now their windowed studio has been boarded up. It just makes no sense.

Anyone think those titles are just a tad on the racist side? I laughed to be honest, but still.

Eurovision 2010 - 25/27/29 May 2010 - Norway

gonzo posted:
I think there really is one way to win Eurovision, proved tonight - release the song in Europe, tour it, make an effort, and get it popular. We look at Lena, who is, let's say, reasonable. But she was 1st in Germany, 2nd in Austria, 2nd in Switzerland, and received regular airplay, the best attack is to attack the mind.

I thought the Eurovision rules meant that a country's song had to be written specifically for Eurovision. I didn't realise you could release the song all over Europe and promote it so heavily. If this was the case then surely there wouldn't be anything stopping (for example) the BBC approaching Leona Lewis and asking that her next single be considered "specifically for Eurovision" but then releasing it all over Europe before the contest anyway. How is it decided what constitutes a song written for Eurovision? And if what Germany's done has always been allowed it begs the question why it hasn't been done before.

TBH I'm happy that Germany has won for the first time in so long but I wouldn't have put the song in the top 10, let alone consider it a winner. If this is the direction the Eurovision goes in future it'll be a massive change.

Eurovision 2010 - 25/27/29 May 2010 - Norway

Sorry Square Eyes ... Norton has to go, the contest has to be taken seriously. Either Paddy O'Connell or James Dagwell as commentator next year.

I completely disagree that Norton doesn't take it seriously. Watching tonight, I was struck by how restrained he was with the jokes and sarcasm. I think he reins himself in quite a lot for Eurovision whilst lobbing in the odd "horrible frock" line to keep things light.

Eurovision 2010 - 25/27/29 May 2010 - Norway

It was a comission piece by Martin Landquist (Nåid), and (most of it) can be listened to on his website under "Comissioned music".

Eurovision 2010 - 25/27/29 May 2010 - Norway

Also much as I agree with you about Kattis Ahlström and Anders Lundin, it seems that unfortunately they started the trend for cheesy double acts with cheesy jokes, which they could pull off but those that followed couldn't.

Eurovision 2010 - 25/27/29 May 2010 - Norway

Cast your mind back to Sweden 2000 - Kattis Ahlström and Anders Lundin were probably the best hosts I can remember. Witty, ironic, self-deprecating, and polished. They are still the ones to beat. In fact - Stockholm 2000 is still one of the best contests for my money. Sure TV technology has improved - but the opening was classy, and the show just set the benchmark for future events...

Not just classy, it was effing epic!

Wogan-free version on YouTube for anyone who's not seen it

Anyone know what the music was, incidentally, or was it specially composed?

Sky News: Presentation Discussion

When they relaunched in 2005, Sky News reinvented the TOTH sequence somewhat by having no real title sequence after the headlines (and after they ditched the studio flythrough, no titles at all). This was compensated for by the gloriously OTT bed, the volume of which was cranked up for the Bruce Hammel voiceover. In effect, the headline bed was the opening sequence. It wasn't really a bed at all, it was far too musical to be a bed and that's what made the way it was used OK.

Now Sky News have reverted to using longer titles with a more traditional repetitive bed, but have not adjusted their TOTH sequence to match this, retaining the simple voiceover with a studio/location wideshot. So by way of opening the bulletin we just get "This is Sky News, with whoever" over a nice but dull bed. It's a mess IMO and I'm surprised I'm the first to have mentioned it.

The visuals of the new titles are great, though.

RTE News - Ireland

Also, if you are going to go down the road of being hypersensitive about Irish independence, please be aware that our nation is called Ireland. All this "Republic of" stuff is quite a British way to refer to the country.

Ummmm, going totally off topic, but aren't we called The Republic Of Ireland? Ireland is an Island, made up of two parts, The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. There is no nation called Ireland....I live in Eire, the ROI, not Ireland.....

Nope, it's just Ireland. Republic of Ireland, ROI and Eire were all names traditionally used by the UK government, which refused to acknowledge Ireland as the name of the state until around the time of the Good Friday Agreement. Of course Republic of Ireland is a perfectly valid description of the country, it's just that breakingnews was annoying me and his using that term seemed at odds with his eagerness to point out (completely unnecessarily) the independence of the country from the UK. As you say, it's completely off topic and I'm sorry for dragging it out.
