The Sky News Thread

This morning I've heard two radio interviews with Nick Gibb. The first on LBC with Nick Ferrari, who basically just shouted at him calling him to resign and not letting him get a word in. The second with Alastair Stewart on TalkRadio who actually had a measured debate with challenging questions and answers. Ferrari like Burley and Morgan is just point scoring.

The Kay Burley promo is very aggressive. I fear she may get the C4 News/GMB treatment from the Government and they'll not put ministers up.

Sky are now promoting the return of Burley (and the new set) on September 1.

Coronavirus | Television News Coverage

Leicester was used as an anti-Government 'nobody gave us any warning' story. St Nicola doesn't get negative coverage. Just look how 'two time lockdown breaker' Mayor of Leicester, Sir Peter Soulsby was/is given a free ride.

Best and Worst Regional Titles and Themes

For me its this Calendar intro from 1989. Authoritative and ballsy:

Loved those titles you knew it was time to watch the local news with the excellent and forever missed Richard Whiteley.

I wonder if many viewers outside Yorkshire were surprised to learn that Whitleley wasn't just a quiz show presenter but also a serious journalist?

He first came to national fame with the ferret biting clip from Calendar shown on It'll Be Alright On The Night.

I’m really surprised they won to be honest. The Newsnight Prince Andrew interview is now legendary and continues to have an impact to this day. Lots of broadcasters covered the Hong Kong story.

But then there were some baffling choices all through this year’s ceremony.

To be honest, I don't see how a pre-recorded interview would be classified as news coverage.

Love how Comcast want to give a very subtle dig to Rupert Murdoch, who launched Sky News and the channel was his baby, which later spawned the dross that is Fox News Channel in 1996. Rupert can now look at Sky News now owned by Comcast who also own MSNBC/NBC News, his arch rivals and the target for a lot of hate on the right wing side of US politics, as Murdoch seems content in ass kissing the Trump administration on Fox News until we see the dying embers of that administration hopefully in November.

There's a brilliant HBO mini series, The Loudest Voice, about Roger Ailes and the birth of Fox News. Well worth a watch and Rupert Murdoch is portrayed as very 'hands off' and only getting involved when the station moved too far to the right during the 2008 election and went full on anti-Obama. Murdoch got him to be more balanced.

Still available on Sky/NowTV. Russell Crowe won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Ailes.

The Times’ Radio Station after “BBC News Stars”

I wonder how long it'll be before the great Alastair Stewart gets a slot?

He's done radio before (a brief stint at 5 Live when it launched).

Would seem a natural home for him.

He's back on TalkRadio from next Monday in the 6.30-10am slot, covering for Julia Hartley-Brewer.

Interestingly, the only Sky breakfast shows that make the BARB top 15 these days are the weekend editions. We were regular Sunrise viewers from 1989, but gave it up when Burley took over (we were OK with her afternoon show). It's too in your face, empty chairing, forcing mugs on guests, 'gotcha' interviewing, no sports news etc. As creatures of habit we don't bother with the weekend shows, either. We have the radio on now.

The weekday Sunrise shows were always BARB top 10/15 regulars.

Government to hold daily UK televised press briefings

...and Paul Harrison left Sky News after 20 odd years to spin for Huawei. Hope he's paid well!

Government to hold daily UK televised press briefings

I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned Andrew Marr.

Can anyone seriously imagine Andrew Marr becoming a Conservative Government's spokesperson? Don't forget this role is taking questions from the media on behalf of the Government. I think there's a bit of confusion about what the job actually is.

Government to hold daily UK televised press briefings

Someone like Joey Jones (ex-Sky News Pol) would fit the bill in all aspects, knowing well the operation from both sides of the lectern.

Edit: Sorry. Just realized that Derek made the same suggestion on the previous page.

Alastair Stewart's gone for Joey Jones too, in a Spectator article.
