CITV Gas Street cut-outs

I was watching a few CITV continuites from the 1998-2004 Gas Street era and it got me wondering, what ever happened to the cardboard(?) cut-outs of the characters from the CITV shows (e.g. Hey Arnold!, Watership Down, Pokémon, Digimon, The Worst Witch, Art Attack etc.)?

But I've noticed they've refreshed the endboards for iPlayer. Using a variant of Reith (previously Gill Sans) and the now all pink BBC iPlayer logo

Yep, that was a playout fail, which is being investigated (UKTV recently switched playout to SES in Munich). Quite a few emails from viewers came through

That's not really just an ITV issue though, similar things have been done in Canada & Australia, in fact even more drastic:

Ten News made cutbacks and consolidated capital city news bulletins from 5 to 2. Meaning Sydney is producing pre-recorded news that's a near 500 miles away from Brisbane. (& over 2000 miles for Perth, yikes)

RTL4 (The Netherlands) breakdown into their morning news a few months ago:


Rough translation from the description box

Major technical problems at the RTL Breakfast News on Wednesday, August 12 at 07:00; the leader does not start and Jan de Hoop's microphone then also fell out for a while. These problems in the control room were so persistent and not immediately resolvable, so the broadcast was soon interrupted and a broadcast from Luxembourg was initially started after a few minutes from Luxembourg, but after 2 minutes it was also stopped. The 'Please wait' screen of RTL4 was still visible until the commercial break at 7:11 am. All problems were resolved by 7.15 am.

End of the road for UTV?

It's the end of an era, but it makes business sense to centralise the continuity, especially if UTV viewers haven't really winced much about it. I do recall posts on here complaining about the sloppiness of it before ITV bought UTV sooo... 🤷
