BBC World News: Presentation

I absolutely agree. She did it with style. A classy lady and a terrific presenter. Thank God she had the water waiting below. I dread to think of her trying to struggle on whilst sounding as if she was being throttled. Nice to see Alastair Yates in a different style of studio. I like the shoebox effect.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

It was such a pleasure to have Alastair Yates doing the overnight newscasts for three nights running. Come BBC WORLD, give us more of this classy news presenter.

I would love to see him and Owen Thomas doing a show together. They would complement each other beautifully. I am not a Hockings fan - she is totally outclassed by CNNI's Hola Gorani, Becky Anderson and MZ Fionulla. And what About Mishal Husain - she is sensational!

I haven't seen Sally Bundock presenting for a few weeks. Is she a victim of the Business World News cuts?

BBC World News: Presentation

I agree that Alastair is good... but his style is rather old fashioned. I find his delivery and manner that of a regional presenter in the mid 1980s. As for Martine.. she always looks like she's just woken up. Most of the time, she looks bored. I agree with you that Jonathan is a bit school-masterish. And this is the fundamnetal problem with World's presenters... there's nothing wrong with any of them... all highly competent and watchable journalists.... but it's getting the MIX right of old school and new talent / young blood which maintains the channel's authority but doesn't make it look paternalistic and hectoring. Martine, Alastair, Nick Gowing, Nisha Pilau, Peter Dobbie... they've all been there virtually since the channel opened in the late 80s (?). Styles change and viewers change and have different expectations... I don't think World has grasped that to a sufficient degree.

Fair comment.

BBC World News: Presentation

I agree. I don't enjoy the news 5am programme as much as TWT. The current set-up seems a bit disjointed and I never ever understood the concept of having the biz anchor at the intro and then she disappears for thirty minutes before reappearing (OK - I know she pops up for one minute early in the programme too). I agree that two news anchors, supplemented by biz presenter and sports presenter would add some substance to the presentation.

OTOH, it also depends on who is presenting, for example, I could watch Martine Dennis or Alistair Yates for hours on end, but would struggle if Thin Willcox or Jono Charles was there every day.

We all have different tastes, I guess.

O, I absolutely agree with your comments. You have warmed my heart on a cold day here with your remarks about Martine and especially Alastair Y. I cannot understand why BBCWN do not give Alastair Yates a regular spot during the week. At the moment he only does overnights on Saturday, some Sundays and the odd Monday and he is a class act. J Charles reminds me of my Headmaster at primary school and I was terrified of him.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

BBC WORLD NEWS - FRIDAY 1 MAY - 21.30 gmt . I had just finished watching another smooth newscast by Mike Embley and was waiting for the usual headlines to be read out when up popped ---guess who? ... Tim (aka Thin) Wilcox to read the Headlines. I thought to myself, "Poor fella must need cash desperately if he pops in just to read the Headlines". Should we do a whip round for him?

The person who reads the 21:30 GMT headlines will be whoever is presenting on the BBC News Channel in the UK, as they move into the BBC World News studio at 21:30 while the BBC News at 10 rehearsals take place in the normal BBC News Channel studio. The bulletin is also simulcast in the UK on the BBC News Channel

Thanks for that. I did not know that. Does Alastair Yates present news on the BBC News Channel as well as World?

Does anyone know what has happened to dear old Becky Anderson? I have not seen her for ages or am I just asleep when she is on?

I enjoy her work. What a character!

Is anybody able to take BBC World News' James Dagwell seriously? He's such a light weight. He just doesn't seem to have any authority about him to me apart from the ability to tie a knot in a nice tie!

I absolutely agree with you. I have been hoping to read a post from someone who has the same opinion on this issue as I do.

Been watching a bit of BBC World News lately and just had a question - how long do the weekend presenters shifts last? Owen Thomas seemed to be on quite a while today. Have to say there are some very good presenters on BBC World, and the channel also seems more lively when they have the double headed slot on weekday mornings.

Yea, I've managed to catch it more and more online recently. From what I've seen there are three shifts on a Saturday and Sunday with one presenter doing 6am-midday, one doing midday to 7pm and one doing 7pm-midnight (GMT)

Rather ironic that you have asked that question, because today's usual three shifts have been changed into just two presenting shifts. A very long marathon one for Owen Thomas (twelve bulletins so far starting at 6am and he's still on air for the 5pm London time bulletin) and - one assumes - the next anchor will take over at 6pm London time. Peter Dobbie seems to be missing today. Perhaps celebrating with the Irish the fact that they won the Grand Slam (we Scot's will use any excuse for a party). Owen - being a Welsh boy - may have lost the sweepstake in the newsroom and has to do all of today's bulletins as a punishment. LOL.

Owen Thomas did sterling work over the weekend - two 12 hour shifts. By 18.00 gmt on Sunday, he was looking exhausted. He does, however, bring a charming sparkle to his work.

I also do not enjoy the double headers with Dave and Lucy. It seems rather forced and rhythmless.
