BBC Breakfast

Louisa Baldini. She reports for Breakfast and used to work for 5 News, IIRC.

Kirsty Wark in hot water

DVB Cornwall posted:
Doesn't the latest News24 advert for Welsh coverage show their reporter extolling the virtues of 'knowing' the Welsh Assembly leader Rhodri Morgan.

I think they mean that he can talk to him for information etc, but I don't know if they're saying he is a friend of his.

As for Andrew Marr, I'm sure I read that he used to be a member of the Labour Party up here in Scotland, not that it really makes a difference to how impartial his reporting is.

newsreaders and laptops

Going slightly OT but since this thread involves newsreaders and technology I though I could post it here.

Is this new tablet PC thing that the ITVNC use, and now being used on five, at least for the short update on Sat, going to replace newsreaders having a paper script in front of them? It got me thinking that if it does, it leaves a complete dependancy on technology. I always thought the paper scripts were there for if the autocue system goes down, so should this replace paper, and then both the autocue and tablet PC systems crash, how would the news service continue? Surely it is common sense to have something to fall back on that cannot crash or become corrupted unexpectedly during a live programme?

Reporting Scotland & Scotland Today

Agree with the comments on size of area and that the presenters cannot interact particularly well. The studio looks terrible, its bad enough that there is no desk without the background being so obviously fake and lifeless, where BBC Scotland has a decent enough looking newsroom to either project there, or expand on the studio space they have for the shorter bulletins and do the full programme from there. If they were to improve on this (studio look) then the programme would be a lot more watchable.

BBC Xmas Ident into News Special Tonight 7.30 BBC1

Does anyone know why BBC One aren't making a generic ident without the dancers? They could have a 'dare i say it' globe in the background in a 3D look with the BBC One logo in the centre.

Isn't the globe seen as the symbol for BBC News and News24 these days rather than for BBC1

Well then, it shouldn't be a problem using it as an ident into the news, should it? I personally think that would be a much better idea as, as was proved in this situation, the idents can be inappropriate, and in other times, the dancers are just extremely annoying.

"BBC WORLD"

Just wondering why they would find it a problem?

Wales Today

The same applies in Scotland and Northern Ireland. Can't comment on the others, but in Scotland the national headlines are re-capped with the regional headlines at the end of the programme. They might as well do this in all regions, it saves George or Sophie hanging around for another 30 mins at the end of the Six. It's also really annoying to get 'we'll be back just before 7', which never happens.

ASIA Disaster - Coverage & Discussion

That's the point I was making and if I was one of those correspondents I'd get a little annoyed if the BBC sent someone else to do my job for me just because they are a better known face or have more experience etc. How would these people get more experience or become a well-known face on the BBC if whenever there is a chance for them to report from their base, someone else is sent to do it?

ASIA Disaster - Coverage & Discussion
Lord Attenborough came from my village..my grandma has got pictures of her mum with him. It's a sad loss for him and for the whole country: they were not just members of his family, but British citezens.
Yes, but so were the 20 or so other Britons who died. I'm sure he is a lovely man, and, as I have said, I have sympathy for everyone affected, but I don't see why they should report this as it makes his family seem more important than the others who died.

The News Presenter Thread

Yes, I think that David did very well. He seemed very comfortable (maybe because he gets to sit behind a desk again!) and handled the news agenda well. Maybe News 24 should utilise regional presenters just as the ITVNC does?

Just had a look at Fox News.

They have been talking about the plight of the Victoria's Secret model who was caught up in the events, not missing the opportunity to show some half-naked pictures of her at the same time, and reminding us how tragic it is that a woman of such delicacy and beauty should be caught up in all this.

Really does make me feel sick.

Yeah that's quite respulsive. Surely in an event such as this, everyone is equal, who the hell wants to know about whether people of celebrity status have been involved over say Joe Bloggs and his wife from Doncaster.

I agree. Last night I kept hearing about Lord Attenborough and how his granddaughter had died. Fair enough, it is a personal tragedy for the man and I feel sympathy for everyone who has lost family and friends in the tragedy, but I didn't think we needed to hear this as it makes no difference whether he is a well-known person or not, it doesn't make his loss any greater than anyone else's.
