…and finally

Can only really echo what everyone else has said, not until I had to step back and think about it did I realise how much of a role this forum has played in my life and, quite frankly, how much I owe Asa and everyone else who’s made this place what it is.

I used to terrorise the Gallery under the username GeorgeB and whilst it may have seemed unlikely at the time (!) I’m now enjoying a career in design, a path I’ve followed in no small part thanks to the fact that TV Forum has been a place that’s fostered creativity and a certain inquisitiveness about things that many others simply don’t notice - and has been a place where us likeminded lot can geek out about these things together.

Cheers Asa and all the best.

Eurovision 2018

Personal views aside, how does Brexit affect our participation once we leave the EU? Will we be treated as a guest participant like Australia and Israel?

Nothing changes, EBU membership is separate to EU membership, hence countries that aren't EU member states can still be part of the EBU.

Fonts - current and historical

Eurosport use a custom font and what appears to be a typeface based on UK vehicle registration plates.

The Eurosport logo certainly uses a custom font but as for that slide, the secondary font (not the rather odd one that looks like a number plate) looks like Circular STD to me. A really nice font actually.

BBC News

Just posted a very small update to the original post to (hopefully) fix the issues with sizing.

dbl posted:
The text size on the straps is ridiculously small even for HD. Remember, think of small screens, i.e. mobiles and tablets.

Overlaying the current graphics I can see that indeed the text is way too small - it's something I'll make a point of fixing in the next iteration of the design. Should have caught it earlier really!

BBC News

One of the BBC's public purposes is to "show the most creative, highest quality and distinctive output and services" and '[set] the standard both in the UK and globally'. The BBC quite rightly calls its news services 'high quality' and 'accurate'. The BBC's vision statement is to 'be the most creative organisation in the world'. There is no argument that some of the reporting from BBC News is industry best and indeed the organisation has driven innovation for decades - so why are the graphics used to present this industry-best news and stories so, in my opinion, poor?

This mock has been in the works for a long time; I've decided to try and take BBC News in a visually different direction. It is louder and prouder, whilst still retaining its very British core and staying out of the way to ensure that the journalism remains front and centre.

First are some new globes. I can see opinion being divided on these - I'm not completely tied to them, and could see this mock working just fine alongside the existing globe. My new globe changes dynamically with the content and the time of day - viewers on the News Channel will see the lighting and background subtly change as the day goes on, going from a morning scene for Breakfast to a darker, more serious theme for the Ten. As for titles, I would invisage something similar to RTVS Spravy in Slovakia.

The graphics, although not a radical departure from what we already have, use a bit more gloss and feature the globe prominently. The globe will slide up with the straps, and disappear when the straps do. You'll see that it is possible to have a strap without the globe, but for the sake of visual balance, I chose to keep the globe there whenever a strap is present.

Programmes with distinct identities like Newsnight and Victoria Derbyshire can retain these identities, whilst still conforming to the new graphics package.

Finally, on the network bulletins, the clock and flipper are dropped but otherwise the graphics remain the same.

I've spent a lot of time on both pen and paper and on a screen working on various different directions, but I feel this is the best product I've been able to deliver for this mock which has been in my head for many months now. One minor qualm is that I worry the graphics could be slightly on the small side - but nonetheless, I hope you've enjoyed this rather long post(!) and I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback.

ITV (2013-Present) Ident & Presentation Mocks

No no no.

I want you to really look at this ident:

Note how the footage is taken. There is little to no movement in the camera - all the camera does, in the whole 30 second ident, is pan to the right no more than about 20 centimetres. There is movement ELSEWHERE in the frame: there are people wobbling with the bus, and that man is sitting down. But you seem to be doing the reverse by moving the camera far too much. Not to mention that what's in the scene isn't particularly nice either...a smudged window looking down onto a street?

Now look at this other example.

There is a bit more movement in this one, but the movement is smooth (it takes literal seconds to apply a stabiliser in editing) and the camera is very 'tightly' focused on one thing, which is the cake. There is a lot going on in the frame which makes it visually interesting without the camera having to move a whole lot.

Please please take a look at some idents and try and note their key properties that make them so clearly ITV idents. Despite what you might think there has been more thought put into these than just "let's grab a camera and film a whole load of random stuff" which unfortunately is what I see in your mock.

I can see you improving but please now focus on the actual quality of your footage. Video quality is not an issue, I'm not telling you to go and buy a new camera or anything but plan what you want! You could even storyboard it, but there needs to be more thought put into the actual footage now.

BBC Oneness - idents and presentation

Unpopular opinion...I have faith in this as a concept and like the idea. Granted, the first two idents we've seen are pretty dire, but I think there's a beauty in them being low-budget: hopefully, over the coming months and years, the BBC will be able to churn out more and more creating a huge range of hundreds of idents. Perhaps we'll even see regional idents, where viewers will be able to look out for friends, family, colleagues in the idents. Give the regions a bit of autonomy if these idents are so low budget!

Besides...I feel that in general the ident is a dying concept. In this era of Sky Guide, online TV and so on we don't need to be told what programme is on next because chances are, we already know. I wouldn't be surprised if when the BBC moves on from one-ness we got idents similar to TF1's idents which are little more than bumpers with a menu every once in a while. But that's my view on the idents, and I fear that I'm alone on this one!

BBC One retro idents

I was wondering how long it would be until a mock like this popped up.

Go back and spend some more time on this because right now this looks like a five minute job..you'd be surprised what a bit more time can do for the quality of a mock

ITV (2013-Present) Ident & Presentation Mocks

Forgive me if I'm wrong but why would ITV need 4K breakbumpers anyway, considering they only broadcast in HD?

ITV (2013-Present) Ident & Presentation Mocks

You've started to get the speed a little bit better, but there's still a few little kinks. The camera doesn't stop moving in the actual idents, so try to keep it moving at all times.

I think the main issue with the window ident in my opinion is the footage itself. You'll notice the ITV idents are all filmed at ground level as far as I know, and usually involve moving backwards or forwards. An example of this in your window ident would be a shot of those Santander cycles (?) at a right angle and slowly panning backwards, opposed to moving side to side.
