North American Affilliates/Network Set Design

Also Canadian and Mexican stations are assigned CALL SIGNS.
The famous Toronto station Citytv calls letters are CITY.

Canadian stations, especially those on television, rarely promote their call signs. They largely prefer the ubiquitous network name + city name formula instead.

NY1 - Relaunches with new look

WNBC news is rather classy looking.

There's nothing 'classy looking' about a botched Clickspring set and a DIN-infected graphics package straight from 2007.

A better Slash?

Just noticed something...
...this design is blatant plagiarism.

And yet, I'm pretty sure half the ideas in your latest mock come from this...

No, that's incorrect. I did not even know that video existed.

I was inspired by the former and short lived Global graphics, though.

A better Slash?

I've been looking at the TVForum gallery for some time now and I was really disappointed at the quality of a few mocks, especially the 'Slash' concepts that have been lingering during these past few months. Though I do appreciate @cyberdude's ambition, there is no doubt all of his mocks suffered from significant fundamental flaws that was pointed out by several members.

Therefore, I've decided to take some measures in my own hand, and to 'reinvent' some of his concepts - rectifying those issues.

Helicopters Used for News Coverage

Canada also has the helicopter wars as well.

Umm, perhaps it's time to review their Commonwealth membership.

But they don't. CTV and Global are the only networks that operates helicopters and they rarely ever promote them or have the flexibility to use them. The former actually owns the helicopters and are up twice a day; the latter are leased by a traffic operator - they're usually up monitoring highways rather than chasing stories. Citytv once had a helicopter in Toronto which they have dropped decades ago, and CBC never had a helicopter due to its absurd operating costs. So much for "helicopter wars".

And the same could be said about doppler wars too. Stations often use Weatheroffice data - they rarely operate their own weather tracking systems. Stations also don't break into programming to cover storms because it would be a "overuse" of their resources and would equal to lost revenue for the network (all of those pricey American programs!)

American TV networks breaking news

Last network cut-ins in Canada are probably the Fort McMurray fires or the Ottawa Parliament attack?

Technically, the last network interruption was this past week, with the presentation of the 2017 Federal Budget. CBC and CTV aired from 4-5pm, while Global aired from 4-4:30pm. (The budget, which was supposed to be released at 4pm, was delayed for 45 minutes. Global did not air the budget as their allotted on air time expired.)

From what I can recall, the last legitimate interruption of programs from the major networks was the 2014 Ottawa shootings. The former was only at the regional level, the local stations in the area provided continuing coverage.

American TV networks breaking news

In Canada, network interruptions are pretty streamlined similar to the United Kingdom. Master control facilities for the major networks are hubbed in a central location (primarily Toronto), and if a interruption were to occur it would transpire with a simple preemption notice or a jump cut to a live studio.

Unfortunately, network interruptions are a rare occurrence. They directly result into lost advertisement time, the primary source of revenue for most stations. The closest "special report" you'll get in Canada is when it's planned ahead of time.

International News Presentation: Past and Present

dbl posted:
Slightly odd how CTV's 'Your Morning' show isn't really national.

CTV's Your Morning for all intents and purposes is a national program. The program is simulcasted on the national CTV News Channel to supplement viewers primarily west of Ontario. CTV stations west of Ontario airs a local breakfast program. Those in Ontario eastward will view Your Morning on their CTV stations.

And in terms of timezones? Pfff, it was an afterthought by CTV. I guess those in the Pacific time zone will never get to see Your Morning! Laughing

International News Presentation: Past and Present

This isn't a video but I'd thought I'd share this image I posted to Twitter. It shows the perils of some templates.

The show itself "Pulse Across America" is neat where they use Microsoft Pulse to ask questions and you see real time results that are broken down by demographics.

Font wrapping in cable news is disgusting.

Good Morning Britain

I see where you are getting at; it's actually quite decent. Maybe try raising the ticker font up a few points to level with the information bar.

Only thing that really irks me is the CNN-style L3s, but that's a personal thing. Zipper

International News Presentation: Past and Present

what a awful intro. Words can not fully explain how dire that was.

I beg to differ. There's worse.
