The BBC World News Thread

Focus on Africa is sold to a lot of African partner stations in a similar way to the other BBC world Service tv programmes. It makes financial sense to transmit the studio b version to partner stations and combine world and channel, or produce a separate generic news bulletin from A when there’s breaking or continuing news coverage.

On that note, one station in Ghana now shows Focus with a 30 minute delay.

(The programme is one of relatively few these days on BBC World News that is locked to the same time GMT all year round due to partner station broadcasts.)

Local TV

JAS84 posted:
What transmitter is Scarborough on? If they get Look North Leeds there (Emley Moor transmitter) instead of Look North Hull (Belmont), then it makes sense that it would be covered on Leeds TV, as they'd be able to pick up the channel there.

Scarborough is covered by the Oliver's Mount transmitter, which broadcasts That's TV North Yorkshire.

Christmas Presentation 2019

Russty_russ on Twitter posted RT listings from 2005 the other day: they were really clear compared to what we have now.

Since then, they've just made the font size smaller and smaller on some channels to fit in more channels on the Freeview pages and the pay TV page now seems to have Freeview channels as well.

Every other TV listings magazine has had an overhaul in the last five years reflecting the changes in broadcasting since digital switchover, the RT lags terribly behind.

Until recently, I felt the radio section was based on which DAB stations existed back in 2003, it took a long time to make any changes there, as well.

The decline of BBC News online

If they are using the co UK they will get all radio and news services bar video for free.

Are you sure about that? Certainly not my experience when I've used the BBC website abroad (and at least once when I've been in the UK and they've thought I've been abroad). You get the international version with adverts, doesn't matter if you put .co.uk on the end or not

Yep I think the radio stations are available abroad for free, but the move to BBC Sounds has restricted a lot of content to those not in the UK I believe

In my experience, if you try putting bbc.co.uk when you're abroad, you get redirected to bbc.com. However, using O2 roaming earlier this year in Germany, it treated me as if I was in the UK with access to .co.uk and the iPlayer! As soon as the mobile flipped to hotel wifi, all the geo-blocking started!

UKTV Presentation

Looks like some changes on one of the UKTV transponders. 4 services added and a large drop in bitrates for the FTA services.

http://digitalbitrate.com/dtv.php?mux=12129&liste=1&live=69&lang=en

Looks like they have changed the modulation scheme as well though - as the bitrate for the transponder looks to now be 42.4Mbs when until the 19th Nov it was less than 35Mbs?

The FEC changed, appears they are clearing out their pan-European transponder and moving services across to save money on having two transponders now that Really, Really ROI, Home are gone and Good Food is no more.

Future of Sky Cinema linear channels?

Sky's NOW TV is aiding the removal of linear channels by insisting on the Parental Pin on Linear Services whereas the exact same content can be watched on demand without it.

Is that Now TV's doing or a result of Ofcom allowing channels to show post-watershed programming before 9pm if they're PIN protected?

Future of Sky Cinema linear channels?

I thought Film4 might have done it, but no, though since that doesn't appear on All4 in any way shape or form, I suspect Channel 4 don't have any web rights to anything they show on Film4 - whether its down to budget or not I'm not sure, though its fair to say Sky Cinema probably has deeper pockets than Film4.

Added in October.

BBC News (UK) presentation - Reith launch onwards

A couple of glitches up to the 10pm TOTH on the News channel.

First the Sportsday coming up menu with Jane Hill voiceover : 1x in the Reith style then repeated again in the old Gill Sans graphics package.

Followed by back-to-back identical election trails.
