Freeview channels thread

Sony Movie Channel has a surprisingly good Sci-Fi Season at the moment, with some pretty decent films.

Deja Vu, Surrogates, Starship Troopers, The Machine, Godzilla, Signs, After Earth, Total Recall, Judge Dredd, Universal Soldier, Ghosts of Mars, 2012 and others. Not all brilliant films but as a collection very respectable for a channel on Freeview.

VIVA To Close & Be Replaced With MTV OMG?

JoshX posted:
It's just a tad ironic that the last song played on VIVA was Spice Girls' Viva Forever.

That won't have been accident! Going out with a sense of humour.

VIVA To Close & Be Replaced With MTV OMG?

It's basically just a rebrand of MTV Love, rather than a launch.

I don't recall there being much (if any) promotion for the launch of MTV Love, so isn't much of a surprise that the rebrand to MTV OMG isn't being promoted either.

MTV Love was just a temporary channel as a stopgap between the closure of VIVA and the launch of MTV OMG, so it's a surprise to see so little build up to it.

There was a lot of news coverage about MTV launching the new channel back on the 8th February when they issued a press release announcing it but since then nothing.

I'm not sure there was 'a lot', but it seems to me that 'OMG' will just be the placefiller for when MTV don't have one of their pop-up stations, allowing Classic to remain year-round. You'll see press releases each time it rebrands (I presume Summer, Halloween, Christmas) but probably not when it reverts to 'OMG'.

I saw at least 10 articles on different websites, so pretty decent coverage.

MTV have got on top of it today, with a page on their website all about it and are now promoting it across social media.

Sky's Branding

Significantly, this means Netflix will now be available on Now TV branded Roku devices, leaving Amazon as the only major streaming service with no presence on there.

Indeed, as Amazon don't play nicely with others it is already absent from Virgin TV, BT TV, TalkTalk TV and YouView where Netflix has been available for ages.

Good to see Sky catching up.

Sony Crime Channel

The new Sony Crime Channel achieved a 0.18% share (and 0.03% for the +1) in it's first week.

That outweighs what they have lost by closing down Sony Channel and cutting True Crime from Freeview and Freesat.

It's still pretty low compared to several other channels on Freeview and Freesat and lower than Sony Movie Channel but should build in time.

Quite decent ratings for the channel's debut month, but I'd say that its LCN (60) on Freeview does hamper its figures to some extent.

It should grow over the next few months as you've said, and in the long term, Sony should be satisfied by stronger ratings throughout their portfolio of channels.

Why would it shut down completely during the Sky EPG reshuffle? Will it not just be moved around? Could we see other smaller channels close also in May then?

I'd wait and see if Sony are really going to cut the cord on Sony Crime 2.

As for other channels closing? It's been known since last November that ITV Encore is already closing this spring, but throughout March or April, I'm betting on a closure announcement from ITV - killing it off before the reshuffle gives Sky back a valuable slot (and subsequently using it for one of their free channels or Sky Two). Any announcement planned on short notice by ITV won't work this time.

But you don't think the upcoming reshuffle will cause some lesser smaller channels to shut other than maybe Sony Crime 2. Could it affect Discoverys smaller channels like DMAX/Shed/H&H in a good/bad way? Ratings are fairly bad for DMAX.

It's a great opportunity for a smaller broadcaster in the UK like Sony to close down a badly performing TV channel and sell their EPG slot to a bigger broadcaster that wants to get a decent slot in the Entertainment genre.

VIVA To Close & Be Replaced With MTV OMG?

MTV OMG launches tomorrow. Not seen any promotion for it on or off air. All very quiet.

Sony Crime Channel

Sony Crime Channel 2's ratings have dropped significantly since it was taken off Freeview. On the week ending January 14th 2018 it's top show 'Deadly Women' had 75k and number 10 '48 Hours' had 32k. Now since its was renamed and taken off Freeview the top show for week ending February 18th 'Prison Wives' only got 23k viewers and the number 10 show 'North Mission Road' only got 9k. How long will Sony keep this going for? This kind of a channel needs to be free. These figures are from the BARB website.

Hardly surprising. It's only available on Sky and those with other satellite TV receivers that bother to add it manually. As it's full of worthless junk, that's not going to be many!

The channel is most likely to close down as part of the Sky EPG reshuffle in May.

The Freeview Thread

Pick+1 would be a waste of a slot unless it's just a placeholder broadcasting for a few hours in the night to hold an EPG position. Real Lives would be a much better addition to Freeview (and Freesat) as it is very much on par with Pick and Challenge, Sky's existing free 'entertainment' channels.

Sony Crime Channel

Does Sony Crime Channel 2 have any website or Facebook page yet?

No and it never will. It's likely to disappear in time, quite possibly during the Sky EPG reshuffle.

Channel 5 general discussion

Has C5 dropped NCIS and spin offs without saying so?

No. Why would you think that?

NCIS and NCIS: Los Angeles continue to air on 5USA, and NCIS: New Orleans is on a break from Channel 5 but will return in 2018.
