Pope's Death

Quite correct - for the life of me I don't know why I keep mixing up Jeremy and Jon's names Rolling Eyes
It was indeed Jeremy - and flippin fantastic he was too
He has a weird mid-Altantic slur which is most bizarre and jarring when it crops up: it goes completely against his otherwise English-to-the-core image.

A really magnificent report he delivered - the special amount of time allocated to it was more than justified

The Royal Wedding - TV coverage

Think the cheapo wrought-iron wall-light sconces from Argos said it all Smile

The 50th Eurovision Song Contest

I think it's awful - the heart in use for the past few years is so contrived, supposedly post-modern ironic and all that.

It's just tacky.

The Royal Wedding - TV coverage

Noggin that is spooky - I was thinking exactly the same thing when watching about the Property Ladder wallpaper!! Those graphics are ghastly.
And Katie Derham was her usual chirpy chirpy self of course Rolling Eyes

Who the heck was lighting designer for the BBC's rather bizarre sitting room-like set-up for commentary - it was terribly harsh and one-dimensional.
Also, Mernaghan's constant interruptions, both into conversation with Morgan & Co, as well as during the service were less than pleasant.

Overall, very well produced though - particularly the room chosen for commentary with that lovely mullioned window as backdrop. For one a solid, static set Smile

BBC1 Ballet Ident

The ballet ident is really lovely.
I think its use should be kept as it is - just for very special sombre events.
Agreed about the music being more 'profound' than the visuals. It's really effective - don't know about others but it evokes something in the pit of my stomach whenever I see it - i.e. it works Smile

The 50th Eurovision Song Contest

Yes - every Eurovision should have its own graphics, it's what makes it interesting. Indeed it's what makes it watchable Smile

Ten O'Clock News

That's interesting...

I like Huw as a person, but not the way he presents. He's nearly too casual, and tends to shout a bit - surprisingly noticable over the Pope coverage.
Have to say I don't like Darren at all at all - I know that'll put a lot of people's backs up here Smile, but I find he just doesn't relate to the viewer at all - he's too blank if that makes sense, you just can't get to know him I find.
Whereas grand authoritative newsreaders can also be 'blank', you still get a sense of the person underneath - by contrast Darren is just too neutral and bland - even his greetings and closing comments are official and distant.

Yes, the grandness needs to be reintroduced to Ten more than any other bulletin - I miss it Sad

Pope's Death

Jon Sopel's flagship report of the morning's events used on the One News, and presumably again on Six, was one of the most beautifully composed reports I have ever seen. This is really what the BBC does best - slow, reflective reports, using images as much as the voiceover.
His editor used lots of long silences, periods of atmos sound, and the most emotive shots of the events, all magnificently assembled with care and dedication.

The audio was flawless, and the script informative yet dignified - Sopel's voice being just perfect.
A really wonderful piece of television - love to see it again Smile

Always been torn between the original scheme and the redecorated red version Smile
The red panels looked great alright - gave it a real boost.
Such colours always work especially well in winter.

BRING BACK THE 1999 SET!

Yes it was crazy how they dumped it so quickly - I couldn't believe it when I first saw the replacement - it was supposed to be an improvement?!

The old set was so good I can't think of anything to better it, except I may have used a darker wood in the flooring... It really was impressive, and the red carpet offered it an air of grandeur - the colour of royalty on Her Majesty's Service Smile.
The designer must have been raging when they dumped it for the current shambles.

I'd bring it back in the morning if in position to do so. And look how much better News looks in 4:3 - stupid widesreen, I hate it for studio production, hate it! Mad

I think the 1999 BBC set was the best they've ever had - just magnificent. The deep red carpets, the downlighters, the sweeping metal railings, the elegantly sculpted, almost classical off-white walls....
I cried when they ditched it Sad

And for what, a nasty morgue of a place, cold and austere with B&Q flooring Mad
