Election Night 2005

Sky's set was utterly abominable, looked like an RTÉ set from the early 90s - now that's saying something! I nearly fell off my chair - it was so cheap and tacky and clunky and ugggghh!!

Yes the BBC's coverage was the best - the wood flooring and gallery etc just beautiful. Much more homely than ITV's (although pretty good).
Sky did seem to be ahead alright with data, but the BBC's coverage and anaylsis was second to none - Dimbleby's and Paxman's banter just fantastic!

RTÉ was pretty good for what it's worth - anything with Bryan Dobson is, a superb boradcaster up there with the best in Britain.
Sitting in the BBC Televison Centre amongst all the stars and buzz and excitment he must have felt more than just a tinge of regret broadcasting back to little old Ireland and the often incompetent fools who chuck RTÉ's bulletins together.

It was interesting to note the superior production values of their studio coming from the BBC - but notably the gallery staff were clearly drafted over from Dublin as the vision mixing was at RTÉ's dull as dishwater best Rolling Eyes

Election Night 2005

Yep - I saw the top and they said "from Television Centre in London" - but no mention of BBC...

Ah Smile

RTÉ's brand spanking new offices in Millbank were shown for the first time today on Six One, with Brian O'Connell covering the election.

He was standing with their 'newsroom' if it can be described as such behind. A large backlit 'RTÉ London' sign is positioned up on the far rear wall which looks very well - perhaps a setup to be used from now on...
Needs some tweaking though - the reflection of the camera in glass far back in the office is clearly evident Rolling Eyes

If you watch the RTE coverage carefully and have ever watched Match of the Day, Final Score etc. on BBC One you may have an answer!

RTE are broadcasting from the BBC Sport studio at BBC TV Centre in London.

Thanks for that noggin - it was probably said at the start but I missed the first few seconds Mad
The English guests are kind of giving it away anyway!

The production values are notably higher than usual, says it all really about RTÉ. The effect on Bryan Dobson and Mark Little is even notable - they look much more professional with decent production values around them!
The lighting is beautiful.

Election Night 2005

Do any of you know if RTÉ's coverage is coming from over there or Dublin?
The studio production is being broadcast in 14:9, a first for RTÉ, and the set, lighting, mics and in-studio gadgetry looks decidedly professional, i.e. British Smile

The studio doesn't look like an RTÉ Televison Centre one either - anyone know if they're hiring one out over with you in London? Thanks.

lol - so true Smile. When he first started presenting, people in my family kept shouting out 'quick, the weird guy's on!' Very Happy

Yes his enthusiasim is infectious - really shines through.
A great presenter, efficient and engaging.

Here's his BBC profile - his accent explained by living in the US for 23 years, and again till recently!:

The Presenter Catchphrase Thread

Smile

Ah Alastair Yates - what a lovely man. Everyone's ideal (rather young) grandad Smile

What is it with Daniel Corbett?! He just has a 'thing' that makes him stand out from the crowd.

Is it his bizarre accent? (where's it from?)
Is it the fact that he looks both old and young?
Is it his weird pauses?
Is it his wonderful catchphrase as mentioned?
Is it his his very cool don't-care-what-young-hip-presenters-think-about-me attitude regarding his oldish image?

Whatever it is - he's fantastic!

RTÉ News

2/5/2005

Justin Treacy - RTÉ's most recent sportsreading recruit made a rather funny Freudian slip last night while promoting Sunday Sport which would feature 'All the gay's latest GAA action' instead of all the day's action Very Happy
You can see it at the very end of the bulletin here if you can be bothered: http://dynamic.rte.ie/quickaxs/9news.smil

I'm easily amused.

Channel Four New Look

I like it overall, but totally agreed about the 4 - it should always be blocked, or at the very least angular - never never rounded Smile

So 4 aside - 7/10. Lovely colour and some nice shapes going on there.

So Kirsty or Huw etc should drop their accents?!
50% of Kirsty's appeal stems from her accent - I find Karin decidedly bland have to say. Perhaps I haven't got to know her properly yet - and before you say it, yes newsreaders can be bland, but not in a bad way.

Perhaps it's just youth that comes across as a bit bland in newsreaders. Older ones tend to be more distinctive, though that could just stem from them being more familiar...

Kirsty's excellent I think: distinctive and commanding, excellent at interviewing and a highly competent newsreader. And her voice is like honey...Smile
Annnnnnyway - yes maybe she does speak a bit low, but that's 'her thing', you get used to it.

Leave Kirsty alone!
The best national female newsreader in the UK I think - maybe along with Moira Smile
