BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

I found it pretty disappointing too that Julia was not given the lunchtime news today when she is a better known face on bulletins. Doesn't support the theory that the BBC has improved it's way with over-50s women's presenters as I bet if Jane Hill or similar were with Tim, they would have done the bulletin.

Also noticeable that for some reason Julia was the only presenter not to go solo today. Every other timeslot was single headed.

BBC Breakfast

Kate has said on Twitter that she will still be covering Breakfast, and as they've put Naga's profile on the new website I would assume she will be too. Since Jon is also continuing it doesn't seem like there is going to be a major change in relief presenters.

BBC Breakfast

And judging by next weeks schedule it appears that Bill and Susanna will be doing Mon-Weds and Charlie and Louise Thurs-Sun

Two problems with the merging the 8:30am-11am shift and 11am-2pm shift together - first one is that the presenters most likely won't spent that long on air. The second problem is that they still have to pay the presenters to cover those extra hours so it's a very minimal cost saving!

The shift was 9am-1pm for many years from the launch in 97, so no reason why the presenters can't be on air that long. And the cost of a slight pay rise for say Simon and Carrie to stay on for two hours extra would be more than compensated for by axing Matthew and Jane (as a hypothetical) as presenters aren't payed per hours on air.

Yes, I guess you are right but it still wouldn't be a large reduction in costs. Personally I'd keep dual headed presentation between 11am and 5pm when the bigger stories are going on. The rest could be single headed.

Well I agree if you have to have single headed presentation then 11 until 5 are the key hours to protect. I'd just rather it was avoided - the presentation is certainly a lot more stale when single headed at the weekend and I think there are other ways of saving money.

Shame 'On the road' is being axed - I thought it was one of the better 'filler' programmes, and can't be that costly to make (if I remember correctly there's only a presenter/producer, cameraman and editor)?

In terms of reducing the number of presenters, as said before the logical thing to do would be to make the 18:30-21:30 shift single-headed, with the 22:30-00:30 presenter starting an hour earlier (with the Ten off). Then you effectively remove two presenters from the rota (I'm guessing something like moving Joanna to afternoons, Ben solo on weekday evenings, Annita Friday-Sunday evenings and Clive filling in throughout the week on the NC, WN and weekend Network bulletins, replacing some of the shifts otherwise taken by freelancers like Adam Parsons and Tim Willcox).

I suspect you'd also lose a freelance/relief presenter or two because of the reduction in available shifts. Moving to a single-headed format during the day (on weekdays) would be a foolish move.

I'm not sure I even see the need to go single headed. Merge the morning shifts into one 8:30am-1pm shift (the O'Clock News presenter can stay on until 2pm) and scrap the 8pm update presenter, which could easily be done by someone else. That would cut 3 roles straight off.

BBC Breakfast

Already posted in BBC thread in Websites forum, but BBC Breakfast finally has a new website, in the BBC One programmes style.

No profiles for Sally Nugent, Richard Westcott and Jenny Hill (yet)

Richard Westcott isn't with Breakfast any more, he's now Transport Correspondent.

Agree. Sad Not really liking all new sports presenters in Salford. Amanda had and showed personality.

In fairness the new staff seem decent and may just take some time to settle in. Thought Katherine Downes dealt with the breaking Muamba story fairly well on Sportsday.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

The only presenters I've known, other than Huw (who present the national bulletins) to appear on the news channel were Darren Jordan (when he was working for the BBC) - during the 2003 power cut, he presented the mid afternoon shift after the 1pm News from Westmister with Carrie Gracie. I'm also sure I've seen Sophie Rayworth covering the odd shift on the News channel when it was also News 24 some years ago (with Jon Sopel on one occasion).

The likes of Charlie Stayt, Suzanna Reid, Kate Silverton, Naga Munchetty, Mishal Hussein, Bill Turnbill and Sian Williams all presented on BBC News 24 or BBC World before joining breakfast or presenting the nationals.

Dermot Murnaghan covered the Five sometimes before he left

Mishal Hussain did do some Gaddafi coverage on the NC (and WN/BBC2) last year and I also recall a very odd Sunday few years ago when she was doing the BBC1 bulletins but also did the NC evening shift with Charlie Stayt (so must have been before he joined Breakfast full time)

Kate Silverton did fill in on GMT a few times before her maternity leave (not the NC granted)

She used to have a permanent shift, with Philip Hayton before they "fell out" and then Simon McCoy, it was the 9-1 (later 8.30-11) shift.

Plus Kate also returned to the NC as cover a couple of times during the 2010 Election.

Worth remembering we don't know the 'new' presenters will follow the same presenting patterns as the current ones. For all we know Sally and Mike might be sharing weekdays and weekends.

That is also a possibility of course. I guess we will see quite soon.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

New sports presenter Andrew Lindsay will be on the Channel from after 2 today.

Looks like Jon Kay will continue to provide relief on BBC Breakfast in Salford. He tweeted that today is the last time he'll be presenting Breakfast from London.

Reading Mike Bushell's tweets it looks like he's the new weekday sports presenter, and Sally will be weekend presenter.

Quote:
the weekdays as well from mid April...just seen the first BBC news channel sport desk from there..looked g8 hope ur well

But someone tweeted Sally:

Quote:
Congrats to @sallynugent who is Breakfast's new sports presenter replacing Chris Hollins.

And she replied 'Thankyou!!'. Who is to know?!

I think Sally is doing weekdays, if you read Mike's previous tweet it seems he is just referring to Breakfast Sport coming from Salford during the week from April, not that he is specifically presenting it.
