BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Sophie Long on location, anchoring LIVE from the Breivik Verdict in Oslo.

First time I recall her being on location as such, apart from the recent Stratford run.

David Eades in London has just thrown to Sophie, thus World and News 24 now simulcasting the verdict.

It wasn't anchoring in this sense, but she was out and about following the Lib Dems here in the UK throughout the 2010 General Election coverage. As I recall she was rather good.

Surprised nobody's mentioned that Clive Myrie has presented the 2pm hour alone. ZOMG. Can't you tell it's the summer... holidays... cover... Michael Peschardt blah blah blah.

Also I noticed Declan Curry doing the business news earlier, I thought he didn't do that any more and just stuck to 5 Live and his obscure weekend TV programme?

First time I've seen Declan do ordinary business news since he left Breakfast a few years ago. I've always thought he was very good at it, so it's a shame he doesn't do it more often.

It is the first time - Simon and Carrie were joking with him about it during the 8:30 half hour.

Still they are not as dynamic as the Paper Review on SkyNews, which comes as sort of a disappointment.

If dynamic means "with two reviewers and an iPad", I'll pass.

Haha, yes well... I'm not sure I mean dynamic if that's your definition... Sky News's paper reviews always seem a lot more lively and they do have a proper discussion about the stories on every edition, wheras the BBC's paper reviews seem half baked and are inconsistent depending on who is the presenter and whether they have a good rapport with their guest.

I do agree that an iPad or for that matter two reviewers are not necessary, but the way Sky do it just seems more "fun" and "inciteful" than the way the stuffy BBC Nyooz Chanul do it.

I'm not biased towards Sky, I think a lot of what they do is over the top and shouty, but their paper review is just right.

I do hope you mean "insightful" and are not insinuating Sky News incite anything.

If I'm flicking past and I see the paper review is on, I sometimes give it a watch. It does go on for longer (I think) so it can be more in-depth. I generally prefer the more experienced (i.e. older) guests that the News Channel tend to have. Chris Eakin does seem to be better, but he always seems to know every guest that's on - probably because he's been doing it for quite a while now.

I can always rely on you to spot my spelling mistakes Laughing

I think perhaps with regard to the BBC they would do better to make their paper reviews longer when Chris Eakin is doing them, and don't bother doing a paper review at all the rest of the time.

A good compromise - whether others would agree is another matter...

I certainly wouldn't - making it longer would be good, but scrapping it when Chris is off hardly makes sense. If you think a paper review is a useful feature then it should run at that time every day. Also if people tune in to see it I don't think they'd be particularly pleased to find it missing on random weeks/days just because Chris was on holiday.

I can't even remember the last time I saw Peter Dobbie on the domestic news channel - it must be at least back when it was News 24. He did used to have his own regular shift on News 24, though. As I recall he used to present between 2300-0100 and also fill in at other times as required. Then he moved back to BBC World full time.

Historically, there has never really been much of a crossover between News 24 and World presenters. In fact, it was something of a rarity until Tim Willcox appeared. I think Mike Embley had a short spell of presenting on both channels in 2001 when he left Newsroom South East, but it wasn't long before he settled at BBC World. Adrian Finighan also occasionally crossed over, but again very rarely. He also used to read news bulletins on BBC Radio 2 back then. Peter Coe also sometimes presented on both World and News 24. Other than those, I'm really struggling to remember any more now.

Well when Martine Croxall was an overnight presenter she used to do daytime relief shifts for both World and N24. And Tony Campion used to appear on both, though infrequently. Jonathan Charles also used to relief shift for both.

Random woman called Claire presenting from Salford this evening. Does anyone know who she is?

Claire Rourke according to comments on Twitter. Never ever seen her before.

A quick google suggests she normally works for LFCTV (Liverpool Football Club TV) and has also reported for Setanta occasionally.

On another note Martine Croxall has tweeted she that she will be doing her first OB for some time tomorrow, covering the appearance of Jeremy Hunt at Leveson.

Except Kate has already said on Twitter that for the time being at least she only wishes to be part-time. There's plenty enough cover for her to do between the weekend bulletins, GMT, occasional news channel shifts, Breakfast (which she said she's still doing) and the News at One when Sian's away. She doesn't need a regular slot.

Not sure if this has been covered here already but the BBC's David Willey, who had been in Rome since 1971, has left (I think for retirement). Must have been one of the longest time periods for a correspondent to hold one posting, if not the longest.

Joanna Gosling on the 11am shift with Matthew today. Very rare indeed! Meaning she's done 5 days this week, I believe.

Probably running a little short of female presenters, with both Jane and Carrie off ill and Louise recently having left.
