Sky News presentation - new newswall

I seem to recall a few pages back somebody mentioned something about wanting to see breaking news coverage in our archive content on Catch-Up.

I can report that's exactly what we've done to mark today's ninth anniversary of 7/7. If you go into the Featured section (the first page you get to when you select Sky News), it's currently the second option available. There's about 8 mins of on-the-day breaking coverage (presenters: Dixon/Dunkley/Etchingham/Roberts), followed by an end-of-day summary VT from Peter Sharp.

It would be great to hear everyone's feedback. Smile

ETA: After this week, the package in question will be moved to the 2005 entry in "The Vault".

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

As a former Watchdog researcher, I can tell you I loved every minute of working on the programme... EXCEPT the arduous rush-hour taxi journey from our offices at NBH to the studio in Covent Garden every week - not 10 minutes... more like half-an-hour given the time-of-day and the one-way system!.

Though - to be fair - if you need to get a celeb quickly across London you wouldn't use a cab, you'd use a Taxi-bike.

As a wheelchair user, that wasn't really possible for me! Ellie, on the other hand... Wink

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

It'd make the most logical sense. There was no pan shot from Chris and Ellie to Annie who was in the interview area of the set.

I wouldn't know... love the show (and my former colleagues) though I do, I had to get up for a 4am breakfast telly shift!

In answer to your question about Ellie Crissell's appearance... an as-live run-through (but with bits recorded for air if necessary) starts at roughly 6pm, including live links and the playout of all VTs in full, before a quick food break just after 7pm. This run-through is when Annie - as the team call her - records the pre-titles opening and the trail that goes out just before "The One Show".

It is therefore entirely possible for Ellie to have recorded her bit entirely out-of-sequence just after 6pm, been back at NBH well in time for her bulletin (awful traffic permitting!) and to have her Watchdog contribution slotted seamlessly into the programme as-live. Again, I'm not saying that's what did happen, just that it's the most-likely scenario to explain her "dual presence".

Good Morning Britain - the launch

ASO posted:
I watched GMB until around 10 minutes ago, I switched over to Sunrise which I never do. Their paper review is great and I actually really like the format. They need to have something like this on GMB with a couple of guests and there are some great laughs going on. I was pleasantly surprised.

Thank you - we aim to please!

ITV News 2013 Rebrand

Just announced - Jess Brammar leaving ITN to join BBC Newsnight.

sorry, but im not sure people are that interested in anonymous producers leaving one place to go an do a similar job somewhere else

Yes, because if they're not one of "the chosen people" in-front-of-camera whose movements we can scrutinise to an almost-microscopic degree, they're clearly not worthy people or good journalists whose professional achievements merit any mention.

Good Morning Britain - the launch

Of course there would be some form of procedure for more serious news events if the guest was inappropriate. I think having a guest for 5 minutes is a waste and they could make far more use of them, even if just to do a paper review.

How long does a paper review have to be to not be pointless due to the lack of actual analysis, and not make the guest seem like a fifth wheel? Also, how many guests would be willing to do a paper review? Instead of faffing around with all this, you might as well give in and extend the interview if it's that much of a problem.

I would say a guest booked would be appropriate to the GMB format and therefore would be appropriate to take part in a paper review. Certainly the majority of the guests I've seen so far would have contributed something worthy to one.

For me it just seems so throwaway to have guests like Jay Leno, Jonathan Ross, Paul O'Grady and even political leaders without getting any more out of them than a couple of minutes on screen.

I wasn't aware Breakfast and Sunrise conducted a paper review with the guest present? I'm fairly sure they only get a 'couple of minutes on screen' when they appear on those respective programmes, with no-one complaining, so why is it a problem here? I don't understand what you think Jonathan Ross and Paul O'Grady would add to the programme by commenting on stories?

Actually, we on Sky do three lots of ten minutes across three hours (the third of which looks forward to the day's coming events), and it's not just done with whoever's going to be on the sofa that morning (which would be a ridiculously scattershot and impractical approach as others have said), but with a handpicked group of people who rotate, and new faces introduced to the lineup on a regular basis.

Surprised though from the news releases it seems to be long form content rather than current reports as I think is on the NOW TV app. No reason short form content couldn't be on the Sky On Demand service I'd have thought.

I'm one of the producers working on this, and I can tell you there'll be everything there you could possibly want, including bucketloads of archive material in "The Vault." Bear in mind this is just a soft launch for the next week or so - we've been ramping up to it for months, but it's going to continue to evolve, and I'm happy to take suggestions for what peoplle might like to see.

Incidentally, it was a privilege to make my on-camera debut today, posted here only because the presentational set-up deviates from the norm (... for fairly obvious reasons!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkaofP8tLnU

If you're still welcome to suggestions regarding the on demand service, I think the addition to sky archive footage 'live as it happened' would be a great addition - just as you did at the beginning of the Thatcher on demand report. And also one of the greatest sky journalism nights of all would be the fall of tripoli, which would also be great to add too.

Thanks

That may be something we do in future, but as I'm sure you can appreciate, it's still an evolving thing. That said, your feedback is very welcome.

It's by no means static. For example, tomorrow is the 10th anniversary of Tony Blair having purple-flour-filled condoms thrown at him during PMQs (ahh, we were all so young!), so this morning, the on-the day VT was added to the Vault. Similarly, when Monica Lewinsky wrote an article about her experiences for Vanity Fair last week, we added a double-length VT, the first containing a report of Clinton's denial and the second his confession, all neatly put together in context and telling what I hope is a reasonably full story.

Bottom line: It won't just sit there - it will be reactive to events - whether that's anniversaries, (sadly) deaths, or new events that make old events newly-relevant, so do make sure you check back often.

I just thought I could ask him and perhaps he knows something about the music.

Respectfully, even if I did - and I don't - I would be professionally-obliged not to share it here as it wouldn't yet be public knowledge. That's just simple how-not-to-annoy-your-bosses-and-lose-your-job stuff.

The things I CAN share are those which are in the public domain (a la Week In Review going on telly) but don't get the coverage they might elsewhere because TVF caters to (for want of a better phrase) a very niche audience.

One thing that always interests me is "significant" breaking news, maybe the archive material in The Vault could include some of this?

In time, it may... Wink (In all seriousness, I'm in charge of that bit, so I'm happy to take suggestions.)

Can you also say something to skynews' theme music? The current one since May 2010 is getting more and more annoying than ever before. I am desperate. The orchestra tune from 2005-2010 was superb.

Not my area, sorry.

Also, I can tonight reveal that the On-Demand programme "Week In Review" (Secker/Pierce/Maguire) will now be going out on TV every Friday at 1930 starting this week. Please tune in - as always, feedback welcome!
