BBC Breakfast

In a digital age the main advantage of moving back to London would purely be for staffing issues, but even in Salford they can just double up with North West Tonight when needed. I'm sure I read somewhere that they can even control the autocue from London, so other than during a technical glitch, it can't operationally be that different to just having a separate studio for BBC Breakfast?

BBC Breakfast

I don't see what they'd gain by moving back to London (just like they don't gain anything other than box ticking by being in Salford in the first place). Most of the guests they have on tend to be experts and they're right by Manchester Uni so won't struggle in that sense. As for celebrity guests, they seem to be doing OK but they aren't a pivotal part of its format. They could end BBC Breakfast at 8.30am and have a 'Lorraine' type show from London, but then they'd be accused of copying ITV and dumbing down. And if they did a full move back to London, there would be raised eyebrows from the public (wasting the cost to move there in the first place), not to mention they would annoy most of the staff who have relocated their whole lives to work on the show. Just leave it as it is, its doing fine and getting 2-3 times the audience of Daybreak.

ITV London Tonight

Although I'm not from London, I can total agree on the familiarity issue. I watch North East Tonight and I know 9 times out of 10 it's going to be Pam and Ian or if their off one of the 'senior' Correspondents like Kenny Toal or Rachel Bullock and that's on very rare occasions. In London you regularly get a mix of Nina, Faye, Charlene, Luczeria, Ben, Natasha who present quite regularly. I've always said they should have a 'London' team and a the moment every bulletin bar the 6pm (and some late editions) is presented by the presenter of the the latest National news programme.

Alastair and Mary are former London Tonight presenters, with Nina & Natasha still presenting there. There is a bit of sense in using them in terms of cost cutting, but what will inevitably happen is London Tonight will just become an extension of ITV News with the regions joining at 6.30pm (assuming they keep the current model). They might as well just cut straight to the point and merge them completely now.

Ideally, London Tonight should have its own separate team but that also goes in the same bracket as all regions having control over the look and tone of their bulletins- it isn't going to happen!

Daybreak relaunch with Lorraine and Aled

I've never quite understood why they do a proper forecast in the morning anyway. The regions are already extremely tight on time, surely it would be better for the presenter to give a very brief overview so they can fit more in. The half hour Daybreak forecasts are very thorough for people wanting it in more depth.

ITV News

Not just ITV News but its bizarre how Channel 4 News didn't change until 2007 either, and even stranger for Channel 4- Big Brother didn't go widescreen until 2006. I've always felt that was very peculiar as it was their biggest show and I believe it was the last programme of its sort to be filmed in 4:3. But I'm taking the thread way off topic here.

Going back to ITN, and I rarely watch Channel 4 or 5 news, but are either of them in HD yet?

Channel 4

I'd say the truth is somewhere between the previous two posts. I'd say Channel 4 started to decline when Endemol charged them an extortinate amount of the final few series' of Big Brother which completely bombed, but Channel 4 had put all of their money into it by making cuts and were left with nothing. They still had some good British dramas that pushed boundaries such as Sugar Rush, Shameless etc (although Shameless went off the boil a few years ago) whilst they often aired innovative or experimental programmes like Space Cadets or Shattered. They were both variations of Big Brother but they've taken those variations to the extreme with some of their 'creative renewal', so those types of shows don't seem to have a place anymore.

I also think some of their issue is overexposure of their shows, and shafting their big programmes when a new one comes along. An extreme example of that is Brookside when BB came along, and now they have neither. Channel 4 lacks any kind of history with its programming in the way that BBC, ITV and even Channel 5 have. Meanwhile they're constantly showing the same shows on what seems like a loop- Million Pound Drop and Come Dine With Me. Both used to be capable of big audiences for Channel 4, but now they're pretty average.

My final issue is that they don't seem to have any confidence in their new programming, for example Baggage on a Friday night. It's absolute trash TV at its best (or worst, whichever way you look at it) and could easily become a big hit for them- just as Take Me Out has for ITV, but they've gone and put it up against Eastenders & Corrie. Those programmes subsequently never take off, and they have to wheel out MPD yet again.

I miss the days of hour long shows being three parters with a break at 20 past and 20 to

And only, on average, being 3 minutes long and not 4!

I am sure that fewer commercial breaks commanded higher fees, percentage wise, than what they do today - and I know about multi-channel having an effect but surely the more popular the programme the higher the fee and if less slots then even higher!!!

Advertising is much easier now than it was a few years ago because of online, mobile etc. If the fee was higher for fewer slots then a lot of advertisers would just look at different methods.

X Factor 2012

Just a small issue from tonights show, did anyone notice they were using a 24 hour clock but still stating am or pm? It annoyed me quite a lot Embarassed . Really good show tonight though, it regained a lot of its spark and I think it was the best bootcamp programme for a long while. The panel works much better now too.

There has to be more than 12 minutes of breaks per hour on X-Factor. They seem to break after every audition nowadays.

Oddly, tonights doesn't feel that bad for adverts and I would've expected it to be much worse than usual as its 90 minutes long. Maybe that's just because the bootcamp stage of X Factor tends to drag on a bit.

Daybreak relaunch with Lorraine and Aled

chris posted:
Just seen Fiona Phillips appearance on Daybreak.

She left GMTV in 2008.
In 2009 she returned to promote her appearance on Celeb Apprentice, and caused chaos.
Later returning to stand in for Lorraine several times including a full week at the end of GMTV's final summer 2010.
Since then a few times covering for the previous Lorraine look, but did not manage to get on Daybreak.
Friday she returned for a story on Alzhiemers on the New Daybreak and managed to have a quick chat at the end about Aled.

I think it will be a while before she will get to cover for Lorraine as Kate is first in line now, but never say never.

Can't quite get the point you're making? Are you saying Fiona's itching to get back involved? Or are you just narrating her appearances? If the latter, fair enough, but I'm not convinced she's itching to get back in the breakfast TV saddle.

I don't particularly get the impression she wants to either, and I'm sure her name was thrown into the hat at some point if they were struggling to get someone to do it. She's probably just glad of the TV work particularly as its to do with Alzheimers. She also appeared on yesterdays 1.30pm ITV News bulletin, and spoke about it on GMTV back in 2009 about a week after she left (on a different occasion to the Apprentice one).

Daybreak relaunch with Lorraine and Aled

I saw it, just looked like someone pressed the wrong button. And just on the topic of todays programme, Ranvir looked like she could do with a good lie in!

It looks a lot brighter, and the underground car park doesn't look half as bad!
