This looks a bit bitter than the five vertically mounted panels that were basically centered in the balcony the last few months. I'd imagine those panels were used to show their website, Facebook, Twitter, analytics and other important messages.
The panel installation looks hastily done but I'm wondering if they did it similarly to Shepherd Smith's Fox News Deck where viewers can see incoming graphics feeds, their competition and other incoming video. The big difference here is that these aren't easily viewable.

Sky News 2015 new look
I noticed a week or 2 back that black panels had started to appear above the gallery . I saw Sunrise this morning and 22 maybe more screens have appeared but I don't really see the point in them. Who could see them up there from the newsroom? The panels ruined the backdrop but pleased to see the TV's are switched on this morning even though you can't really see anything.
Are they some of the screens used from the election studio? - think I preferred seeing the activity upstairs on the wide shots.
edit a pic for people who can't see

It's funny they'd select such a high profile site especially considering the boss Roger Ailes is extremely paranoid of his security. He travels with body guards, frequently calls the cops, has a ton of security cameras at his house and his office is bomb proof.
Just read a few of these articles.

Come to think of it Roger Aisles probably had very little say in this decision as it sounds like they are moving all their operations to Two WTC. On the bright side security is very tight. I believe the only vehicles that are allowed on site are searched thoroughly far away from the buildings, so that may ease Roger's fears. At the same time I doubt he'll be at the helm of Fox News in six years when the building is expected to be completed as he'll be 81.
As much as I'd like a world with out Fox News I wouldn't wish that on ANYBODY.
Finally on an unrelated note why can't you easily multi quote?

So if something happens to the WTC happens again. Fox News will be off the air? Ignoring the death and destruction, that sounds pretty good.

Its amazing with so many nutty people running around that Faux News hasnt had many security concerns at their current Ave of The Americas HQ. Doesnt seem smart to me to continue to try and do streetside studios at WTC 2 considering they have such a polarizing viewpoint.

As much as I don't like Fox News I'm not sure moving into a high profile area is the best idea. I realize physical security is increased at the World Trade Center site but it still would be a high profile target. But this would be good for helping revitalize the area of the city.

It makes sense for the BBC to ignore stunts like this. If they give someone time time of day for something like this more people would come down to try to get attention for their cause.

I guess if you go for massive automation, having manual switcher control without graphics, video replay, camera control etc. may mean you still don't have a show?
Automation just ties those systems together and controls it. If all the existing systems were up and running you still could do a lot manually. It would be difficult but you could still make it work.

The simplest solution could have been having the plasmas in front of back-lit white (or black, if they must) panels to at least create some kind of depth. The shine of the black panels makes it look like they've forgotten to switch something on.
This isn't the example but they could do what my local ABC station did and mount the wall of panoramic screens out maybe a half a foot to foot off the wall. Of course it probably would be just single color LED rather than actual LED video screens behind the frosted panels.

Which would probably triple the cost.
There is probably a good reason why BBC Millbank and BBC Midlands use exactly the same technique in their sets.

Thanks.
Edit : Since this a is a brand new installation I'd figure I could ask this question in this thread. Are any of the ITV regions automated with Mosart, Ignite or OverDrive? I see they have what looks like a small switcher which they could have installed as a back up.
As a side note at some major new builds here in the US stations such as KNBC/KVEA (NBC's NBC/Telemundo duopoly in LA) have completely foregone installing a manual switcher. Seems kind of dangerous as if automation fails they'd be SOL.

The team isn't actually that small for the size of the station. One reason being that they do have to do quite a bit of old-fashioned news gathering. Unlike all the other regions, they don't have any real 'newswire' service from PA , etc.
This article on their website has a team pic to give you an idea of numbers...

I'm curious what's PA mean - is it ITV's news sharing service or similar to APTN/Reuters TV?
(Emphasis added)

Maybe the BBC producer that's behind all those mess ups was transferred to WN?
BBC World News from New Broadcasting House
WN just had the same full that the NC seemed to have quite a lot. With the cameras ready for a desk opening, but Geeta was on the catwalk. Good save actually by Geeta.
Quite a nice backdrop of London. Even if it is computer generated.

It doesn't mean they aren't launching it today just yet, some programs launch their new studio on their main programme.
What's the point of doing that if the studio is ready? It must be more complicated to present from the newsroom so you would think they wouldn't do it if they had a choice.
From my experience over here in the US most new set launches occur in the evening during their flagship newscasts. I believe also they launch during the day because that's when most technical staff is available to work out the last minute kinks (despite having many rehearsals).
The Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Thread
GMB bulletin was from the newsroom. What is taking so long? It's getting ridiculous now
