Did anyone ever do a "public service test" on the BBC Trust - all they seem to do is approve things which are pretty obviously a public service anyway!

Yes, The Government did last year. Exclamation

I believe that Brekkie Boy was asking whether any TVF users were part of the 10,000 individuals/organisations that took part in the PVT.

I didn't, but surely someone here did?

I did. It was open to anybody who took the time to visit the Trust's website. I was one of the many who demanded Linux/Mac versions.

I doubt it - that would come under several exemptions.

Well I've said it now, and no one has come round to carry me off to the Tower! (or had the post deleted) Shocked Laughing

Aren't you a funny one. Perhaps I'll drop an email to the MoD and see if you're laughing afterwards.

I know when I worked for MOD every establishment had a confidential file marked as "War Plan" which gave precise instructions for that particular location. It had to checked and upated about twice a year IIRC and more often when the security status was raised. Later it was renamed simply "Contingency Plan" and included alot of extra information about what to do during strikes and periods of civil unrest, not just when half the population had been vapourised!

Have you heard of the Official Secrets Act?

Yes, of course! I didn't tell you what was in the file though, not that it was very interesting anyway! Laughing

Well I don't think the MoD would be happy about people knowing how often they updated their contingency plans for one.

Under the Freedom of Information Act they would probably have to tell you how often anyway!

Yes I've heard of it (actually been signed into it).
I dont think any secrets have been given away.
I would expect something like this to exist anyway regardless of having more than a passing interest in the OSA.

"We understand from the Gloucester Citizen that something happened in that city yesterday. We're afraid we're unable to bring you that report as our satellite truck ran out of petrol at the northern border of Bristol."

I thought they were still using a converted ice cream truck which can hardly be described as a truck.

I would take two things from this:
1; The professor probably said there might be cuts in this area which has come out of the reporter's notepad as 'closing down'
2; Newspaper agendas write stories.

Isn't it the CAA who've, effectively, caused the current litter up on Dundry Hill?

I think it's their tower height restrictions which have limited the number of services on each tower and, therefore, increased the number of towers required.

It's about five towers up there now, on three different sites, isn't it?

It's actually seven across two sites - Dundry is the GWR transmitter and Dundry East has the MXR and Now Muxes on it.

Mendip wasn't built until about 1969. There were delays finding a suitable site, the BBC/IBA originally wanted Dundry, but the CAA objected because of its proximity to Filton and Bristol airports. The Pen Hill site was finally chosen, which is less than ideal for serving the city of Bristol.

Bit of an irony considering the litter of FM transmitters on top of that hill now. On a good day you can see the lot of them from as far back as Brandon Hill.

Judging by Nick's previous postings I would hazard a guess that his reason for wanting a merger is not down to the interests of the viewers. Perhaps Mr H's annoyance with the implimentation of news by the respective newsrooms in Bristol is at the root of his frustration.

Yes, he was the king of catchphrases and recurring characters, a trend seen in The Fast Show, Goodness Gracious Me and Little Britain, and this was his attempt to be more like NTNOCN, ABOFAL et al. And for me, it didn't work..

They were never going to 'change their spots' so to speak. The programme was always billed as a sketch show, it was always going to be a sketch show, so I'm not quite sure what on Earth you expected it to be.

I don't understand why you think Enfield and Whitehouse would ever be commissioned to produce something other than a format that has served both of them - and the BBC - so well in the past.

I liked it, it was certainly better than Little Britain and all that rubbish (while some modern comedy sketch shows are good, LB is apalling). It is indeed very reminiscent of Not the Nine O'Clock News , Flying Circus and Smith and Jones . I hope it gets a better reaction next week.

But if the same characters appear again next week, it won't be reminiscent of them at all. It'll just be resorting to repetitive characters again.

You what? Harry Enfield the first time around was the king of repeating characters - Stavros, Kevin the teenager, The Slobs ...

I'm sure the lure of main pres on The West Tonight (circa 90,000 viewers) would have stopped her going off to the Middle East with her family ...
