Goodness, the BBC must pay £8 a month for Virgin Media?

Ho ho ho. But seriously... the bar at the top of the homepage states "Page last updated at 22:35 GMT, Wednesday, 22 October 2008 23:35 UK" so I wonder what kind of problems they're experiencing.

ITV wants to axe some regional news services

Put it this was, more people read this thread today that visited an average ITV Local site: Cluncky player, linear approach to shows (no fast forward, rewind or pause!!!! in 2008!!!!!) little original content of value.

The BBC Radio Player was just as clunky and that plodded on for years

Yes, but the distinct difference is that many millions used the "clunky" Radio Player while, as Gary has said, one man and his dog use ITV Local.

BBC Live Streaming

Movies and acquired content seems to be the common problem, but as most if not all sport is already simulcast on the BBC Sport website I don't see why that would be a problem.

It is most, not all... There are certain sports where the internet rights are sold separately. Match of the Day football is an obvious example?

Match of the Day and MOTD2 are already simulcast on the BBC Sport website ...

I suspect this is more to do with a scaled launch and ensuring the servers can cope so they're launching in batches.

Weston-super-Mare pier fire

Brekkie posted:

Even if unsure, they can just run with "we're getting reports of the pier being on fire", and then correct themselves if the reports turn out to be a false alarm.

Yes, that's responsible, isn't it? Broadcast unconfirmed rumours (essentially) before establishing exactly what is going on.

Weston-super-Mare pier fire

James Vertigan posted:
I noticed that the breaking of the news about the Weston Super Mare fire was on BBC Breakfast just after 07:30 this morning.

Why could it not have been reported by BBC Points West in their 07:25 bulletin? Surely the news would have come from them to the BBC national news?

I know BBC regional news aren't meant to break important national/international stories on the regional programmes, but is it the same for regional stories, even from the programme's own patch?

Anyone thought that the facts might not have been established at 7.25, but by 7.30 they'd had a call or two back???

Isn't this the way ITV do their opting? Regional centres send everything to London/Leeds and the opting is done centrally?

It is - and look at the problems they had a few weeks back when engineering work in the switching room went wrong!
