Disney+ UK Launch Date Confirmed

Heck, the same can apply to Around the World in 80 Days (the Jackie Chan one) as it's a Disney film yet in the UK, it's on Netflix than on Disney+.

Wasn't it a Walden Media production?

Yep but it was distributed by Entertainment Film Distributors over here and seems like it was sold internationally to a number of distributors.

Looks like Disney only had US Domestic territories. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327437/companycredits?ref_=tt_dt_co

Looking at this article from 2003, looks like it had a lot of foreign pre-sales before Disney boarded the project - https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2003-aug-05-fi-eighty5-story.html

Disney+ UK Launch Date Confirmed

I'm surprised Gnomeo and Juliet is on Disney+ as it was distributed by eOne in the UK.

Yeah that's a curious one -from what I can find EOne acquired the UK and Canadian rights from Pathe who were selling international rights on it. It's also gone to Disney Plus in Canada.

Still appears to be streaming on Amazon Prime in the UK and in Canada via EOne but given it's been a decade since it's original release it's possible Eone's 'term length' when they acquired it may have ended/lapsed enabling Disney to pick up some rights for those two territories.

The BFG is another one where the rights are complicated, made by Amblin Entertainment and distributed by Disney in some territories but local distributors in others like eOne who released it in the UK. I assume it’s available on Disney Plus in the US, Canada and Australia but not in other territories.

Yep, I immediately thought of that. I'll be interested to see what happens with the likes of Real Steel and War Horse which were Dreamworks titles but was released via Disney when they had an output agreement - both are available on Amazon in the UK - as far as I was aware Disney retained those titles after Dreamworks split from them to form Amblin Partners but I'm not entirely sure to be honest.

HBO Max

Aren't all HBO originals are on Now TV? Just get a subscription to that. And isn't pretty much all the non-HBO content on HBO Max available in the UK already anyway?

There are a few exceptions like Search Party - a former TBS show that was renewed by HBO Max for 3 additional series.

Yep, how that stuff is being distributed internationally is a pretty mixed bag with shows such as Search Party (I presume) retaining any existing international deals when it was a TBS show (Though I'm guessing All4 have dumped it now?)

The stuff from HBO Max (so far) on Sky tends to encompass Max original content produced by Warner Bros such as Expecting Amy, Raised By Wolves, The Flight Attendant and Class Action Park. The Max Original movies (originally WarnerMax) are distributed by Warner Bros pictures hence why things like Superintelligence and American Pickle went theatrical here and will most likely go to Sky as part of the theatrical output deal.

Some shows like LoveLife and Made For Love are being sold internationally by other studios (Lionsgate the former and Paramount the latter).

HBO Max

Honestly, I'm not really happy about the unavailability of the service in the UK due to Warner Media's current deal with Sky since I think Sky should've revised the deal that would allow the service to be available there as I plan on subscribing the service eventually and I don't want to wait for four years in order to get it.

Sky revising the deal at a detriment to themselves? If WarnerMedia were happy to sit at the table with them and sign that deal, then they are obligated to see out that output agreement.

I'm sure if Jason Kilar was in post at that time, they may have gone another way but in 2019, WarnerMedia specifically stated (at the HBO Max investor launch) the Sky deal was for 'predictability and stability' so at that time the renewal (and those eventually with Bell Media and Foxtel) was entirely strategic.

The Die Hard (1) one is particularly odd given the age of the film and the fact that all the sequels are there.

I wouldn’t say it’s odd at all - it’s not unusual for different movies in a series to have their own rights deals (unless they eventually get packaged much like the Potter or Star Wars movies)... I would also think (and this is just an opinion) that Die Hard being generally considered a cut above its sequels and it’s newfound status in recent years as a Christmas movie probably makes it a more valuable and in demand catalogue title than its sequels.

Disney+ UK Launch Date Confirmed

Bohemian Rhapsody is a Regency Enterprises film.

Their movies are usually released by 20th Century Fox (or as it is now, 20th Century Studios) however after the first Pay TV window (in which Disney can offer them to their services or pay tv/streaming partners), Regency retain and handle their own sales for TV and SVOD.

Looking at the catalogue, there’s a fair number of recognisable titles such as Fight Club, The Revenant and Man On Fire which were released by ‘Fox’ but Disney would actually have to license if they wanted them on their platforms.

Adding to that think another issue with the U.K. is the amount of co-production done here over the last 5 years by HBO with Sky and the BBC... there is a fair amount of programming in the last few years such as Avenue 5, Chernobyl and His Dark Materials that HBO would not have access to as the BBC and Sky would naturally want to exploit themselves (And there are still new co-pros coming like The Baby, Landscapers and recently rumoured, Brideshead Revisited with the BBC).

I think you slightly mis-characterized what a co-production is .

Have I? Maybe the phrasing is incorrect but if I’m not entirely mistaken HBO don’t tend to own those shows in the UK - the likes of Sky (if they board as a partner or co-producer) now usually retain rights such as video sales, physical discs, third party licensing and SVOD in their respective territories.

Potential merger of NBCUni and WarnerMedia?

I don’t think there is anything to this apart from some media analysts/Wall Street types trying to get some traction behind an idea...

The same firm were saying much the same thing a year ago - just as the idea of Sony divesting their entertainment assets always crops up again and again.
