Am I the only one hoping it's not an on-the-(half)hour schedule again this year?

No, but I think we'll still be in base, eighties marketing malarkey mode.

Yes, you often find they tend to sneakily repeat these specials within the same period! Usually whats on at Christmas gets repeated at the end of the year...or in "clearance" if we're talking shop terms.

Personally, I think it's an insult to viewers.

(It was a bit ridiculous, decades ago, though, to have repeats of Christmas specials in the summer schedules.)

If a show's good enough, it can be repeated in the run up to next Christmas.

I wonder why Still Game is treated with such disdain by the BBC (England) ? You'd think that Christmas special- it's a new episode- would be on a date nearer to Christmas. 15 December indeed.

Years and years and.....ago, I worked out that the Christmas ident should appear on 20 December, change slightly each day, but more on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day (particularly) and Boxing Day and continue until New Year's Eve, when it would be replaced with a New Year ident, which would change slightly on New Year's Day, again on 2/3 January incorporating "New Season on BBC1" and continue until 6 January.

(Details about possible idents withheld. The lighting change for time of day would happen with both idents. )

The usual ident would then return, but would be changed/refreshed on a regular, perhaps yearly basis.

Still seems fair enough to me.

It's amazing isn't it ?

Boring, tedious and bland- that's the way to run a TV channel,
apparently.

Not to mention having "distinctive" idents which in reality look like everyone else's!

What about the programmes? Won't anyone think of the programmes!!!!!??? Laughing

Oh, I do agree, really I do.

Wrong forum for that discussion, though (?)

The email was posted on that thread (I read it myself) but seems to have been removed for some reason. But it looked genuine to me. It's usually quite easy to spot a fake.

Trust me, there was an e-mail from Naomi Gibney posted there, Quite why the DS Gestapo have taken it down I don't know, but I have asked the original poster contacts me with a hard copy.

Thanks for that clarification. So we are to get a new Christmas ident after all. Can't wait for those irritating sparkly droplets!!!

Why don't they do something else, ie. snowflakes bursting out from the "O" in the "one"?

The problem with modern TV marketing is that it doesn't allow much deviation from "the norm" so the red endboards have to stay over Christmas. Why not some endboards based on the design of the ident? ITV had unique endboards for its ITV50 pres after all.

The only variety is in the ident, which is a strange misnomer.

Bizarre.

Doctor Who - Discussions on Season 5 onwards

The fifth Doctor and Peri is the obvious combination to go for.

Tegan was incredibly annoying- complaining all the time- and should have gone after just a few stories- she was a blight on the Davison 'era'.

Peter Davison could/should lose the weight he's put on for Spamalot and Nicola Bryant (Peri) is back working full-time- with appearances on stage and TV- after a long period off due to a back injury.

It really isn't up to scratch this year, is it? To be honest, I think it has gone downhill since Gaby Roslin left. She and Terry worked well together and since Fearne (and briefly Natasha Kaplinsky) took over, things have seemed a bit awkward. I, too, think Terry's a brilliant broadcaster but it seems as though it is too much for him this year. I find the BBC's decision-making process hard to accept. On the one hand, you've got Moira Stuart (58 ) and Anna Ford (64) being forced into retirement because they are deemed to old to read the news (which is far less physically challenging than a live entertainment telethon) yet on the other you've got 69-year-old Terry presenting a highly stressful telethon which really does need a youthful, energetic presenter. What is the BBC playing at?

Terry was fine after midnight, when he was allowed to relax and not having to pretend that he regularly overdoses on stimulants.

It's got nothing to do with age, it's the thinking that the show has to move at hyper-pace, like a two year old running amok.

Of course, if the content of the show wasn't so vapid...It's the same thing with most episodes of the new Doctor Who.
