Strictly Come Dancing | 2020

Watching the Movie Week compilation show, I note some clips are being credited on screen to "BBC Studios / Strictly Come Dancing" which seems a bit odd.

New Discovery & Murdoch News Channels?

According to Jim Waterson, Rupert Murdoch's channel will be a broadcast channel with output in the evening only:

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2020/sep/10/fox-news-style-channel-for-tv-in-uk-to-feature-nightly-comedy-show

Quote:
Rupert Murdoch’s forthcoming Fox News-style television channel will feature a nightly current affairs comedy programme, in a challenge to the BBC’s satirical shows such as Have I Got News for You and The Mash Report.

Rather than copy the expensive 24-hour rolling news model of the BBC and Sky, the as-yet-unnamed new channel will only broadcast during peak evening hours and will be based around three daily programmes aimed at British audiences.

GB News is said to be offering above market rate salaries to possible presenters:

Quote:
According to individuals approached by GB News, the station has been offering salaries above the UK market rate to potential hosts. Although it is far from certain the channel will make it to air – with the company believed to be still in discussions with Discovery about its launch – GB News has already been awarded an Ofcom licence and indicated it intends to launch on Freeview.

Government to hold daily UK televised press briefings

Boris Johnson is still trying to woo Allegra Stratton, even though she has not applied for the role:

Lee Cain, the prime minister’s director of communications, is overseeing the hiring. Half a dozen candidates have been identified and will be interviewed and given a screen test.

The final two will be presented to the prime minister next month.

10pm News Embargo

The current government seems to like late night embargoes so stories can appear on the next day's newspapers with a sense of immediacy. It can also help knock other stories of the front pages.

Embargoes are only really justified where journalists need time to properly digest a story, eg with a substantial report.

Journalists have little choice to comply as they'll be frozen out if they don't play by the rules. Though it is a bit irritating to see many Westminster journalists tweeting the moment an embargo is lifted as though they are single handedly breaking a major story.

Tim Davie Appointed BBC Director General

Regarding cross-commissioning and promotion between BBC Radio and TV, history is repeating itself to an extent.

In the 1990s, there was the Top Of The Pops radio show on Radio 1 on a Sunday afternoon. BBC Choice had a short-lived series, Radio 1 TV.

There does seem to be a little more co-operation between different news programmes. I've heard Newsnight's political editor Nicholas Watt file reports for the Today programme, for example.

New Discovery & Murdoch News Channels?

A good article by Raymond Snoddy on the prospects of success for the two channels:

https://mediatel.co.uk/news/2020/09/02/are-we-ready-for-more-news-channels/

Quote:
But what if their private business plans were to depend on nobbling the BBC and undermining Ofcom regulation to ease their path?

The Murdoch big guns have always been hostile to the BBC and there have already been signs of increased levels of hostility to both the BBC itself and its news coverage in the columns of News UK papers. You could almost have guessed a new Murdoch news channel was on the way.

And what if Sir Robbie uses his Tory political connections not just to try and undermine BBC finances but to lean on Ofcom to lighten up on “due impartiality” possibly even through legislation.

Either way, the UK could be heading towards a pick and match news channel culture which can only underline the already deep divisions in British society.

Tim Davie Appointed BBC Director General

Charlotte Moore getting promoted to Chief Content Officer does make me think that we'll likely get a new controller of BBC One.

If her new role oversees all commissioning on TV and radio (aside from news) and they’re looking to simplify the management structure, could it be the traditional controller role is removed entirely?

They’ve already done that. And then replaced them with alternative roles.

The controller roles for individual radio stations were abolished and executives like Ben Cooper and Lewis Carnie left the BBC. They then started hiring individual Heads of Station for Radio 1, Radio 2, 1Xtra, 6 Music and Asian Network, reporting to Lorna Clarke, Controller of Pop.

Tim Davie Appointed BBC Director General

Full speech from Tim Davie:

No imminent channel closures are planned, but at the same time the BBC won’t launch any new linear services. So BBC3 will not return as a linear broadcast channel.

It’s not the first time an incoming DG has implored staff to be less inward looking and focus on “making it happen”.

Tim Davie Appointed BBC Director General

Tim Davie’s first move is the reduction in size of the Executive Committee:

No Room for radio? Shocked

Radio will be overseen by Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2020/charlotte-moore

Quote:
As Chief Content Officer Charlotte will be the senior leader for BBC content and audiences across all genres and platforms, with the exception of News and Nations and Regions.

The Chief Content Officer’s responsibilities include:

Television commissioning for all BBC network TV channels and BBC iPlayer
Radio commissioning and production for all ten national radio networks and BBC Sounds
Multi-platform commissioning and production for all children’s and education content
BBC Proms and Orchestras
As Chief Content Officer, Charlotte Moore will be the creative lead and set the strategy for BBC TV, Network Radio, BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds, across all key genres and platforms. She will lead the Channel and Station Controllers and set an editorial strategy which reflects the diversity of all the BBC’s audiences.

I suspect this will prove to be a non-story.

Comedy is meant to punch upwards. The first series of The Thick Of It targeted New Labour and Alastair Campbell. It then moved on to the Coalition and Steve Hilton.

Back to Tim Davie, the major strategy announcement seems to be this Thursday.

Government to hold daily UK televised press briefings

Riz Lateef and Sophy Ridge were both approached but are apparently not interested.

Applications are said to include "several interesting names” but no hints as to whom.

Boris Johnson has tried to recruit Riz Lateef, the leading presenter on BBC London, to become the face of his government.

A senior Tory has revealed that Lateef was Johnson’s initial choice to front the government’s daily press conferences, which are due to start this autumn. The job comes with a salary of at least £100,000.

Work has already begun to turn a former colonial courtroom at 9 Downing Street into a television studio where the new spokesman will hold a televised briefing every tea time.
