BBC News 24

For the n-millionth time, the midday bulletin on a Saturday is always a simulcast, every week the same. Saves bringing in an extra crew to staff N6.

It is always handled by N24 from N8, and is usually presented by Nick, Maxine or Tim. The countdown is faded out at the end to ensure that BBC 1 gets a clean opt-in at the TOTH for the opening sting - no messy openings.

The ending is always slightly awkward, given the closing sting isn't broadcast on N24, and the presenter remains in vision. This means that whoever is presenting is obliged to shuffle and organise for a few seconds to allow BBC 1 to get a clean opt-out. This is guaranteed to look awkward on N24, before the news is continued.

The suggestion that BBC1 should use a countdown is a worthless idea, as a national channel broadcasting a diverse range of programming, a countdown is a waste of valuable air time, which is best filled with programmes or trailers.

BBC Breakfast

looknorth posted:
shes good on breakfast ,just a shame she is in N8 most of the time.I think the BBC should try to make N8 more breakfast like if it refuses to move it into N6,can all of the red bits of N8 not be changed to orange.

Matthew Price also did a great job as 'World Cup Correspondant', it would be good to bring him back over again for Euro 2008, he clearly enjoyed himself.

Ellie certainly can be called upon to present anything, and it is clearly a move she wants to make as opposed being forced to do it - why agree to present the first shift of the day on N24, and still present Newsround in the evening? Similar comments apply to Tim, and his double shifts / long stints without days off / multiple shifts and bulletins in a day - he wouldn't agree to do it if he didn't enjoy it and want to do it, after all, no other relief presenter comes close to the sheer time he is at TVC

Alan Johnston, missing journalist RELEASED

This is a total and utter nightmare. The Gaza strip is slowly descending into chaos, Alan Johnston is still missing with no more news. A horrible chain of events which doesn't look to be improving in the near future.

Whoever is holding Alan, please do the right thing for everyone and release him.

Gavin Esler

Nick,
I totally comprehend your point and fully appreciate what you have said. I was just pointing out that to a certain extent, it would be a story that viewers would find relatable - and obviously, sadly, some much, much more than others. But any story that features a 'name' or a 'face' instantly makes it more 'real', more captivating. I hope that I make myself clear in this. It is an incredibly sensitive and sad issue, it is a horrific topic to think about, never mind discuss.
