Where the hell is our Prime Minister and why hasn't he appeared yet. It is truly outrageous that he has not made the effort to speak to the country, One would have thought he would have firstly issued his 'written' statement sooner, and by now, day 4, either come home to the UK, or made a televised statement. We've heard from Bush, when will we hear from Blair???

Take a look here

Yeah I'm fully aware of that, hence why i mentioned the fact he's resleased a written statement. My point is He should have made a statement personally, televised by now.

The News Special has been plugged at every possible point since it was decided yesterday evening, both on One and on N24. It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

Here is the full press release from bbc.co.uk/pressoffice

There will be a special programme following Sunday's earthquake disaster at 7.30pm on BBC ONE tonight (Wednesday 29 December 2004).

BBC News Special: The Great Wave will be presented by Huw Edwards in London and Jeremy Bowen in Sri Lanka.

It will include BBC correspondents from across the disaster area. John Simpson will also be contributing.

The programme will be followed by the Disasters Emergencies Committee Tsunami Earthquake Appeal.

The special programme replaces the billed programme, Only Fools and Horses.

The Disasters Emergencies Committee Tsunami Earthquake Appeal will also be broadcast at 10.15pm on BBC TWO.

BBC News Special: The Great Wave will also be shown on BBC World today (Wednesday) at 1930 GMT.

ends...

It was only a matter of time before the BBC deployed their big wigs. Edwards, Bowen and Simpson, what more could you ask for.

The News Special will be aired on World.

Yeah it is already written on the Press Release. Wink

The News Presenter Thread

Odd shift change on News 24 this afternoon. Peter Dobbie was on with Maxine Mahwhinney from 1pm. The 4pm bulletin has just begun and Maxine is still presenting with Mathew Amroliwala. Someone not shown up, or Maxine doing a double???

Does anyone know who wil present the BBC News Special this evening on ONE?? Presumably it'll be George Alagiah and someone from News 24????

So is it a simulcast on N24? If so is it from their studio or from the 1/6/10 studio?

It will be shown on both News 24 and One, not sure about World.

That's the point I was making and if I was one of those correspondents I'd get a little annoyed if the BBC sent someone else to do my job for me just because they are a better known face or have more experience etc. How would these people get more experience or become a well-known face on the BBC if whenever there is a chance for them to report from their base, someone else is sent to do it?

Yeah but people like Ben Brown, Gavin Hewitt etc are given titles like Special Correspondent for this reason, so they can be deployed when stories such as these arise, because that's their job. Do you recall Arafat in Paris. The Paris bureau is already manned by Caroline Wyatt and Alan Little, yet Stephen Sackur and Jeremy Bowen were also sent. I am sure we'll see the heavy bods out there either today or tomorrow.

Just had a look at Fox News.

They have been talking about the plight of the Victoria's Secret model who was caught up in the events, not missing the opportunity to show some half-naked pictures of her at the same time, and reminding us how tragic it is that a woman of such delicacy and beauty should be caught up in all this.

Really does make me feel sick.

Yeah that's quite respulsive. Surely in an event such as this, everyone is equal, who the hell wants to know about whether people of celebrity status have been involved over say Joe Bloggs and his wife from Doncaster.

Fair point, the BBC do have a lot of people in the region, but they have failed to deploy even one senior correspondent. Why hasn't Ben Brown, Jeremy Bowen, Nicholas Whitchell or Gavin Hewitt been sent. There should be at least one of them there. Perhaps someone will pop up today.

I'm disappointed with the BBC's coverage of this catastrophe - it seems repetitive and distant. ITV's has picked-up, but Sky News is leaving them both behind. I haven't watched CNN or the dreaded Fox News.

All that said, talking about pros and cons of coverage does seem rather academic in the whole scheme of things. Disasters like this make the rest of us feel helpless and redundant, but just thankful we are not affected.

Totally agree. The BBC's coverage of the earthquake has been a news disaster. From the start I have felt BBC news was caught napping on Boxing Day, and didn't respond with the speed and breadth this huge disaster deserved. In constrast by Monday Sky was broadcasting its programme “live at 5 live” from the disaster zone. The BBC was slow to mobilise journalists to the zones, hasn't broadcast any news specials on the main channels, and its main newscasters are still on holiday! If you consider the millions of people affected, in the UK and around the world, and compare it to the wall to wall coverage say September 11th received, this coverage just hasn't been up to scratch.

Your comment about its main newscasters is questionable. Sophie Raworth has been on duty twice, Darren Jordan on once and George Alagiah tomorrow. They are all anchors of main bulletins. ITV News didn't call in someone more senior on Boxing Day, Steve Scott was the ITV1 presenter that day. Mark Austin was probably rostered on yesterday and Nick Owen today. IIRC when Sept 11th kicked off, Trevor was put on air early and BBC1 presenters were put on News 24 from about 5pm.

I wonder if Media Guardian will share our views and write something on the coverage and lack of specials on BBC tv.
