Piers Morgan to leave GMB

I don’t quite understand what they’re hoping to achieve from an Ofcom complaint, considering Piers has now gone? I can only presume a fine for ITV?

Which would be a blow for ITV considering they paid for the interview & how much of a ratings success it was for them.

Any fine would be relatively smaller than it could have been because IIRC its based on the turnover of whoever is responsible for whatever went wrong at the time. ITV puts all its programme compliance stuff through Channel, who "compile" all that (whatever that means) so any sh*t that hits the fan that attracts a fine won't be anywhere near as bad as as it would have been had it gone through what was Carlton/ITV London weekday for example.

Change of TV last 20 years

Well realistically most changes are for the better, we have HD for a start, streaming and whatever else.

Digital TV (particularly Freeview) can be a horrible pixelated mess on occasion since the trend has been quantity over quality picture wise as bit rates are reduced to fit more channels in. It speaks volumes actually when Local TV (in my case Made in Birmingham) gets a higher bit rate than most of the other SD services on the platform.

On the other side of the coin... ident quality has fallen through the floor recently. It was only 20 years ago we had presentation like this:

Unfortunately a lot of it since is... meh. In fairness it would have taken a lot to top that set so maybe we peaked by 2002.

Challenge - June 2016 onwards

Well conclusive proof that the amount of monkeys given to or by Challenge to anything about this channel is now officially zero. The voice overs don't match the programmes, they don't match the ECPs, the ECPs themselves don't match the programme they're on ("More Wheel of Fortune" after an episode of The Chase for example), advertising programmes that aren't even on... Credit edits that are literally a straight cut with no regard to the end result and for no obvious reason, presentation full of references to stuff they haven't shown in a month of Sundays, Even the amount of adverts being shown seems to have been reduced, replaced primarily by trailers for content on the rest of the Sky channels (primarily Sky Atlantic and Cinema). The channel is effectively sponsored by itself via Sky VIP, clearly nobody else is interested.

Sigh. It used to be so good. Now it looks like its limping along on life-support. I can only presume something contractual is keeping this lame duck going (or they're holding onto it in case they can stick more football on it like they did last year).

…and finally

Nothing makes you feel more like you're still a newbie than all the founding members reminiscing about the things that happened in the four years before you joined. With your J*rongates and your Katherines and your Lounges.

Anyone still here who remembers stuff that happened later on like the Tyne Tees website relaunch drama, and the Sky News live feed which stayed on during the ad breaks (which I think included the gaffer tape debate)?

There was this Sky News output that didn't cut to something else during the breaks :

I'm sure there was an older one, but I can't locate it.

And then there's this, (I'm not embedding because the YouTuber on this account changes the thumbnail to something "against" TV Forum every time a video of theirs is embedded here) - a live behind the scenes walk during an ad break back when Sky News had a set bigger than the QE2:

It's strange I never liked The Jeremy Kyle Show but I did listen to Jezza's Virgin/Capital Confessions which was a precursor to the TV show.

He was doing that radio format when he was at BRMB in Birmingham in the 1990s. It was called Late & Live then, but it was the same format as the later Virgin/Capital show, and subsequently his TV show.

The BBC Coat of Arms

I don't think that the BBC is that much interested in its past.

What makes you think that?

It doesn't really align with their current values, it used to be a bit Empire ish.

Well realistically nobody's current values align with what they did in the past. That's "growing up" for you and its how times change. If we all stuck with how we behaved and did things in the past then (amongst other things) we wouldn't have colour TV, internet and we'd still be driving Ford Cortinas.

The BBC Coat of Arms

I haven't seen coats of arms on anything as of late, though I understand a lot of councils still have them (officially), but only turn up when you Google them, and even then not on official websites. Might appear on their Wiki pages but that's about it.

But yes, its an old-fashioned idea that Jacob Rees-Mogg would probably champion given half a chance, so they've all but vanished.

CBBC Channel

This is an interesting one. BBC Children’s has now become a part of BBC Studios, and so will be able to make shows exclusively for Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.

No different to the rest of BBC Studios which was farmed out in 2013 so they can make stuff for other broadcasters:

Just another revenue stream, it all comes back to the BBC in the end.
