TVF Confessions

This one is going to be very controversial. But, I actually don’t mind 4:3 archived shows being stretched to 16:9. Infact, when I’m watching Family Guy on ITV 2 I’ll deliberately watch on the SD channel so it’s remastered to 16:9 Embarassed

We're all coming round your house when lockdown ends and setting up your TV properly to prevent crimes against archive TV. This is just like that time when <insert suitable setup lead in line and Family Guy style flashback here> Wink

Murray Walker has died.

I was going to put this in the YouTube thread but might be better here:

Murray Walker commentating on a Scalextric race on the set of Pointless back in 2015:

Was watching one of the obituaries on the BBC News website and they used a clip from this; Walker said he loved the show, watched it most days and was delighted to be invited to appear on it.

Murray Walker has died.

Well, Mr Walker is now trending on Twitter.

Not entirely sure why Coulthard is responding through C4F1, I know he's president of the BRDC who released the original tweet, thought he'd have had an account of his own?

And for now, BBC Archive and the infamous time Walker tried to pull out all the stops not to stall the car and then went and did it anyway:

1980 film Rubbish Tips with The Two Ronnies

Yes, IMDb has it down as "Central Office of Information (COI)" as a sponsor which is also what a lot of the original PIFs were credited to as well. So I'd say its a later variation of a PIF which may not be an "actual" PIF (as in "Charley Says").

Piers Morgan to leave GMB

Josh posted:
Ofcom used to air their own summaries of adjudications on the relevant channels:

I believe Ofcom don't actually air anything, those are directions to the broadcaster to do something. They probably just tell GMTV or whoever to air this at a specified time and place or we'll shout some more and apply more sanctions. Or words to that effect.

In the days of the IBA they probably could have aired something (indeed if the Engineering Announcements are anything to go by they did), what with owning the transmitters and all. Although if this from 1990 was anything to go by, maybe not:

NOW TV

An incoming rebrand might explain the current lack of branded Roku sourced hardware on sale currently, I don't buy the argument that is being raised on the NOW Community that they are no longer in the TV hardware provision business. Rebranded, relabelled or even new hardware being launched in the late Spring would seem quite a reasonable proposition.

Was there not a suggestion I heard from somewhere at maybe having their own hardware as opposed to reskinning a Roku device? They did that with the Sky boxes over the years, since the bulk of the supply came from Amstrad for those, and ultimately they ended up buying the company. I think the Sky Q boxes are still technically Amstrad made.

Change of TV last 20 years

I think there is a place for streaming and there's a place for physical media. Converting a DVD collection to a collection of files one can "stream" from a local source is one thing, but streaming from Amazon/Netflix/Disney+ is another. "local" streaming I don't mind quite so much - having an entire DVD collection that can be shrunk to a network box and can hide in a corner somewhere was quite appealing to me which is why I did that.

I do intend at some point to get rid of the physical media once I'm happy my digital copies are all happy (I intend to do ISO dumps though before I dispose of them - I did it once and Kodi I run on a Pi was happy with it but I had to replace the drive in the computer shortly afterwards and I can't remember what software I used for ISO dumps of commercial disks!) Hard drive storage gets cheaper and cheaper for more and more storage. Back in 2005 it was a luxury to have a 250Gb hard drive, you'd have been lumbered with 160Gb at most, though more likely an 80 or possibly a 120.

Piers Morgan to leave GMB

Just seen the whole shebang mentioned on Gogglebox. Seems as though they were as excited as us to see Piers' reaction on Tuesday morning as they didn't appear to sleep after watching the interview on Monday night as they were all wearing the same clothes and sitting in the same positions.

Magic of television. Didn't need to sleep, could have watched them both back 24hrs later back to back. Not particularly hard to work out there's a bit of behind the scenes work going on with shows like this. All of television is a lie, don't you know Wink
