Ad break timing

I used to work in Traffic at 2 of the major UK Radio Groups, and the process is very similar to that in TV. Indeed many Radio Traffic people either come from or move into their TV equivalent roles.

Take an example such as this:
Arrow All the Group's stations come together into 'network' overnight.
Arrow To begin with, each individual station will schedule it's own adverts into pre-determined ad breaks (with a maximum number of ad 'spots' available in each break).
Arrow Then when the 'ad logs' are completed, a systemwide process of 'balancing the logs' is set in action.
Arrow What this does is the key - it goes through the complete 24 hours of a day, making each break match according to whichever station has the longest break in each instance (hope that makes sense).
Arrow For those stations which don't have enough ads in their break to make up this duration, 'filler' ads are inserted to make up the difference.
Arrow These filler ads are essentially random free spots to any advertiser who is already on air in paid-for spots at that time of the day. The viewer will never know, and the advertiser gets a free bonus! Therefore it's always better to have a full ad-break than a half-empty one. The same number of ads will play, but there would be less free ones!
Arrow If there aren't any available, that's when the fall-back of programme promotions come in (in TV terms, if you ever notice a break full of trailers - chances are that's what's happened: not enough ads available to make up the break).

Now that ITV are always in 'network', the 'balancing' is done for the whole of the day.

Hope that makes some kind of sense...

1000Hz GLITS tone and Javascript code

HTML allows for a sound file to be played as the page loads? Most web-page editors should be able to give you that facility... is that the sort of thing you want...?

Otherwise it's possible to embed Real Player and/or Windows Media Player directly into a webpage (assuming your audience has it installed), and displays the usual play controls directly on your web page.

Pebble Mill is dying.

A website has been prepared for their own pictures ... it'll be publicly promoted soon... however... http://www.bbc.co.uk/birmingham/content/image_galleries/pebble_mill_demolition_august_gallery.shtml

Ah yes, "EuroseWide Heavy" does also look very similar.

If I may advertise slightly... over at the ATV Forums we have a section for ATV mocks. Some good stuff in there... however, somebody's posted a useful link to some downloadable Mock Resources, which just happens to have the Microgramma font within it. Give it a go and see what you think...

Pebble Mill is dying.

Sadly there is only 1 TV studio at the Mailbox (AFAIK). It's no larger than my old Primary School's Assembly hall (and that was small).

I was lucky enough to be at the Mailbox during the first transmission of Midlands Today from there, and we got to go into the studio after the show. The studio you see on screen is as large as it gets - that's not a set you're seeing, it's the studio walls (or at least 'elements' that have been bolted onto the studio walls). That's why it overlooks the 'Newsroom' which is actualy the Midlands Today/Politics Show and Radio WM news offices altogether. It's within a corner of this office space.

The Mailbox itself has been fully renovated, and all-poshed-up to appeal to a higher class of poncy-clothes-buyer (none of your chav-bags in here!!).

'BBC Birmingham' has quite a large section at the back. But relative to Pebble Mill it's tiny. Really tiny.

The Radio studios are really quite cool (as stated above by 'Dog') but the major problem they're finding with the place is a simple and increasingly problematic lack of space. Pebble Mill was designed as a purpose built TV Centre. Loads of ducting for every conceivable type of TV/Radio connection. Infinately configurable etc... etc...

The Mailbox was designed for sorting the post.

And that's it.

So much stuff has apparently had to be junked, sometimes whether it's needed or not, because there is simply no room for anything.

It might look nice and flashy and good, but the word from everyone I've talked to about the place is that it's a nightmare. One small example is that Pebble Mill had a nice large parking area. The Mailbox doesn't (unless you want to pay something like £5 a day).

Oh yeah, you know one of the supposed reasons for the new 'Drama Village' ? When Studio A (the large one that's just been demolished) was de-comissioned in 1998. It was officially locked up. However, when 'Doctors' came along, as we know they used the old Foyer studio, used corridors around Pebble Mill, used private offices of Pebble Mill staff after they'd moved out.... and they 'unofficially' re-opened Studio A. As it was unofficial use, when the men with calculators came round, it was logged as 'closed' and therefore the whole of 'Doctors' production wasn't necessarily accounted for when working out how much space would be needed in any potential new premises. When they eventually noticed, it was too late and Pebble Mill had been sold and its fate sealed. Thereby incurring an unexpected additional expense on top of moving all of the 'accounted for' stuff. I would love to know if that really is the truth... but I guess we'll never know...

Pebble Mill is dying.

Philip Cobbold posted:
When were these pictures taken, and how much is actually still standing now?

Over the past 24 - 48 hours (since Monday 8th).
The first came from a colleague of a friend of mine. The next 3 were taken by another ex-Mill person.

Here's some more taken yesterday (Tues 9th)

And that's what's left of Studio A... home of (amongst so many others)Telly Addicts, Doctor Who (Horror Of Fang Rock), Call My Bluff (Bob Holness 90s version)...

Vic Reeves Big Night Out Font

I believe that is "Microgramma" (Bold Varient) or something very similar.
It is also used on ATV endcaps... such as this:

I don't have it available at present, but a quick search should turn up something!

EDIT: Corrected appalling spelling on my part !!

Pebble Mill is dying.

This may be considered off-topic and I was going to pop this into the Midlands thread, but I figured it'd probably be better served with a new thread of its own...

It's so sad.

I have a friend who worked at Pebble Mill until the bitter end, he's now at the Mailbox but someone's been and taken some photos over the last few days...

BBC News (on BBC1) opening music

Sadly this music is not available for distribution without the permission of the BBC. Some members of this forum may well have copies of it, but they risk breaking copyright laws by posting it on here...
Perhaps you could contact the BBC via their website to request permission? Be open and honest about why you want it and you never know... I always say it's worth a try...

Tommy Cooper's Death

There was a documentary about Tommy Coopper a few years ago called 'Just Like That' (original title eh!). It was released on video (4-front video), and I remember it featured clips from that show, but stopped short of the point at which he collapsed. The video slowed down and faded just before the point.

That's the only time I've ever seen any part of it as I missed the original transmission... By all accounts there was no real indication that anything was wrong. The description I've heard is that Tom slumped to the ground, people were laughing thinking it was part of the act. A short while passed when he didn't move and then a rather subdued and confusing cut to the commercial break happened. Not sure how they came back after the break, but I seem to recall that they apparenty did so and announced what had happened...
