S4C Playout Auction

.......Avitel TGE 2040 time code generator. Avitel TRE 2060 Time code.......

<shudder>

From the body language of that document, it feels like S4C still had and dug out an electronic copy of the original BoM from the SI who built the place, and kept it updated. All credit to them. Most auction lists for ex TV stations are not as well ordered as that

Anyone know what SI built the place, and when BTW ? Feels like mid to late 00s ish from the earlier components on the list ?

20 years since the Real IRA bombing of BBC TV Centre

Was it a controlled explosion? I'm sure I remember it went off while they were preparing for a controlled expolosion, but it actually went off by itself.

You could well be right, and I'm not sure how controlled a controlled explosion might be !

20 years since the Real IRA bombing of BBC TV Centre

Little known fact; there is to this day still some damage caused by the bomb on the exterior window frames of Stage VI - in the repairs it was missed.

Shrapnel from the taxi was expelled at high speed and penetrated the aluminium.

The red circles indicate blast damage, the orange line shows the direction of travel from Wood Lane (entrance to Stage VI to the left, towards South Africa Road to the right).
People I work with were placed on search duties in the aftermath to recover whatever was left, the bomb sent metal down onto the LUL tracks for the Central Line and the explosion broke windows on a housing estate behind White City.

It worth remembering this was all damage caused by a controlled explosion, which (should) relaese far less energy than the bomb being detonated 'as intended' ?

TV Breakdown Appreciation Thread

In light of this website closing down, this is a tribute to my first ever post on this forum, which was on this very thread!

Here is another version of "The Time The Place" protest, not really anything different about this one (apart from the better quality Laughing) other than a lady announcer apologising over the programme's logo.

"That's The Time and the Place, in just a moment" or maybe not as they cut to a caption. (and a completely different announcer!)

So where were these announcements coming from, and were they networked?

I’m assuming the female announcer is the local one for the region this was recorded from? I vaguely remember seeing this on Tyne Tees and I don’t think there was any voice-over the TTTP caption. It’s a long time ago though - I could be totally wrong.

The male announcer over the TM slide is possibly Granada, as everything from 0925 to the end of TM used to be routed through Quay Street.

I suspect the female voice was Granada's (or possibly Central's) duty announcer, and was heard nationally. The male voice sounds like Mark Liscombe, who was a Carlton London announcer back then. I suspect that recording is from the London area, and the regions had gone back to local continuity to fill the gap. (As was standard procedure I think ?)

…and finally

I stumbled across TV Forum in 2004. Someone on a Usenet group had provided a link to here with photos of Meridian's then new facility at Whiteley.

Very sorry to see it go. It's made train journeys shorter, and stopped me turning into Alan Partridge in hotel rooms while alone on business trips, although there have also been occasions when my wife has threatened to drop my phone into a glass of water, or insert it somewhere painful.

I've had the pleasure of engaging privately with a few members, and having a real life beer with a couple more.

Thanks to Asa, and everyone in here for the last 17 years. I'm sure we'll still be bumping into each other for years to come....

BBC Parliament Rebrand/Reithed

How long until BBC Parliament goes HD (if only for iPlayer...)

Are the cameras in the Commons/Lords chambers HD compatible? *

Those cameras in the pictures are from the mid to late 1980s, and possibly so is the photo. The larger one is a Sony BVP-3P, and I remember setting it up in the workshop. I don't know what the smaller Panasonic is for, possibly an off line 'snoop' camera

Those Sonys were retired yonks ago.

TV Breakdown Appreciation Thread

I can't work out what could have caused that.

It might have been a 'glue' crate at the CC&M centre went down, so five or six incoming regions were dead on the router input.
So, they rerouted the nearest available regions to the affected destinations ?

Possibly that would do it if the fault affected both centres.

Although there's no mention of when that happened, its obviously before 2013 as it's TV Centre, not Salford.... but if it was in the analogue days that wouldn't explain it, or it would only have happened on one platform, not the other

Yes, good point. I wonder if the missing sources were 'lost' in some virtual mapping, that controls both sites? Though if that happened, it doesn't say much for resilience!

BBC Three channel to return in January 2022

That, or NPO also runs on a similarly numbered system (NPO1 is basically BBC One, NPO2 is BBC Two and NPO3 is the youth channel basically similar to that of CBBC and BBC Three when they still time-shared)

And NPO3's frequencies show NPO Zapp during the daytime, it's clear that NPO has been inspired by the Beeb! And we are glad of this

If anything it's the other way round, NED3/NPO3 has been around since 1988, and is (obviously) a legacy analogue service.

I still think the original idea (from 20 years ago) of making BBC 3 an all day service, with children's stuff daytime and adult stuff evening would have lead to an overall better awareness and reach.

The same idea was suggested from CBeebies and BBC 4, but it is important to have the break point at 7pm to get the children off to bed. In any case those two channels are chalk and cheese anyway, so no point

I wonder what EPG slot on Freeview it will get ? LCN 7 was given to local TV, and 8 is used for C4 in Wales, and Alba in Scotland ?
