Kenny Everett BBC

Then again, if anyone on BBC Radio today inferred that the prime minister was a c*** I still doubt they'd get away with it.

I don't know, I think in the right context (a radio 4 satirical sketch show, say) you could probably get away with implying it in a clever punchline. A big proportion of the country would consider it fair comment...

"

It's not really quality satire though, but rather blunt abuse. Bearing in mind Kenny was one of the Tory's celebrity supporters in the 80s, perhps he made the comment as some attempt to appear impartial 😎

I think he was being interviewed by Mavis Nicholson when he referred to each party as a "bunch of ba***rds" so I doubt he had any explicit political favourites, especially when you compare how Bob Monkhouse wanted to be seen with her because he wanted to be associated with a winner. Kenny's stunt at the Tory conference was more a result of his friendship with Michael Winner rather than any true support for Thatcher.

Kenny Everett BBC

I'd argue Kenny's controversies were more poking fun at authority in the days where the BBC had its tie on very straight. Then again, if anyone on BBC Radio today inferred that the prime minister was a c*** I still doubt they'd get away with it.

Many thanks for all of the replies. A little trip down memory lane.

It appears the BBC series has never been released. Just hope they did not overwrite the recordings.
Cheers...

Did they still wipe stuff in the 80s? They definitely remained intact until at least when Paramount Comedy 2 was about because I recorded them all to DVD. No idea where the discs are though.

30 years ago today: the smokey globe and the 2s

When I was younger and my interest in TV branding was little more than pretty shapes and ominous sound effects, I had no idea the 1 was actually enclosed inside a globe. That being said I think the numeral was a brilliant logo. Similar to the ITV logo at the time, it really gave a sense of authority needed for the nation's "main channel". But, like the ITV logo, it probably wouldn't fit the more cuddly image they want the channel to have nowadays.

Cupid didn't appear on the Thames series IIRC.

I'd agree that The Kenny Everett Video Show that Thames made was brilliant - having just the crew laughing at the sketches and jokes made it feel as if you were in on a private joke.
His Radio 2 show was where I first heard his radio work (I'd missed him on Radio 1, and Capital was a station just for London if you can imagine such a thing, and I loved it.

And yes, it was all done in the best possible taste.
Even if the character couldn't be called Mary Hinge, as that was too rude, and she had to be Cupid Stunt instead.

I thought he was told he couldn't use the name Cupid Stunt anymore (the joke was realised belatedly by management), so he changed it to Mary Hinge instead.

Mary Hinge was the original name but the powers that be thought it was too obvious a joke, so he opted (ironically) for a much more "offensive" name and it seemed to stick.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

what posted:

I suspect most in car listening is still via FM (even the ones equipped with DAB), how ever thanks to RDS no one will take any notice of the frequency, and just keep pressing buttons until their desired station's name appears in the display

Or they just give you a big list of stations and you touch the one you want.

Which is frankly quite dangerous.

Exactly. Your finger might slip and you could end up listening to Heart.

Not certain on the BBC release, but i know that in the Unforgettable Kenny Everett, it was hinted he got tired of TV sketches and went back to his first love Radio with Capital Gold and his various syndicated shows.

The story goes that he was hoisted in the air with Cleo Rocos while he was dressed as Quasimodo in heavy makeup. He was left dangling while a camera fault was rectified, and as he made eye contact with Cleo while they both slowly span around, he said "that's it" or something along those lines.

It makes sense that he eventually went back to radio as his career as a TV comedian was completely accidental. His Thames show only came about because he was supposed to be hosting a straight music show and his links happened to get longer and funnier.

Don't quote me on this but I think the Thames series had more visual experimentation than the BBC show. Considering Kenny was someone who liked tinkering with his machines, I'd imagine he had a lot more fun doing that than performing "live" to a studio audience.

All in all, he was a very special talent and the industry is a much duller place without him.
London Lite, Spencer and Roger Darthwell gave kudos

And as the old saying goes, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

And there's nothing we TV nerds love more than the idea of MTV Hits being rebranded.

Challenge - June 2016 onwards

I've seen listings on the EPG where the show is called something like "The Chase: Dark Destroyer". I don't see what it really achieves, and I wouldn't be wholly surprised if the Chaser on said episode was someone other than Shaun.
