The NEW Central West and BBC Midlands thread

Westy2 posted:
It was Chris James during GMTV this morning, & the 635am slot went to pot, losing VT & autocue, ending with a 'GMTV continues shortly' caption (locally generated?), & off screen Chris said 'What do you want me to say?'!

Central News South Closure

Reuben posted:

Yes, I tuned in at 6.35 especially to see the new Thames Valley service and found Chris James, whos autocue was down and he ended up cutting the bulletin very short and the GMTV 'Continues Shortly' caption appeared for ages.

His voice also went out over the GMTV slide saying "What do you want me to say?" (!)

Was someone late in this morning?

Ex Travel West Midlands Mark One Metrobus 2086 if I'm not mistaken.

Part of the second batch purchased by WMPTE in 1979/1980!

TWM withdrew the last of the Mark Ones a couple of years back I think.

Jo Malin's mouth gets her into trouble

Londoner posted:
Media Guardian posted:
Central TV reporter Joanne Malin apologised after accidentally blurting out that it was "p***ing down" during a weather report, according to the Daily Mirror. There were only two complaints, however - and many viewers emailed in asking her editor not to be too hard on her as they had found it hilarious.

Strictly speaking that's not accurate. There were at least 28 telephone complaints and 3 e-mail complaints to the Duty Office, and that's not counting any calls or e-mails to the newsroom directly. There were two messages of support on the Duty Log.

Jo Malin's mouth gets her into trouble

Did anyone else see tonight's Central Tonight (CNWest)? Jo Malin was on location at Trentham Gardens near Stoke, and I think she let the weather get the better of her. She was introducing the location to the viewers when she said: "Today we're at the spectacular Trentham Gardens. It's a spectacular Italian garden, and it would be lovely here in the sun, but it's pissing it down . Excuse me, it's pouring with rain I meant to say. I must apologise. But the show goes on, as you say!"

The part in question is a little after 9 minutes into the clip.

Is a date known yet for when the final ever CNsouth will be?

They have said December but werent 100% sure so it might even be as late as next year.

My informant tells me that the Sunday teatime bulletin on November 5th 2006 is currently scheduled to be the last ever CNSouth broadcast.

From my perspective (as a former employee of central news south), I must say that this is very sad but inevitable news. From an economic perspective, abingdon is certainly not inefficient. Unfortunately though Whiteley is more cost effective still. Perhaps they can pull it off without destroying the programme, but this won't be possible if the presenters are seperated from the journalists.

How well is it working with Newbury, Nottingham and Maidstoen being run like that?

Well, a programme gets broadcast for each region every night, if that's what you mean! As far as the ITV head honchos are concerned that's all that really matters. Quality does not come into it I'm afraid. There are real problems with low morale in all three "separated news-gathering centres" you've quoted.

Central South and Meridian West have consistently performed well in terms of audience share; the viewers of each programme are obviously loyal people. The viewers and/or public have obviously not been consulted about this change - something which shows how little Ofcom really cares.

EXCLUSIVE: Central News South to Close

From my contact in Abingdon:

"Staff were told in a meeting first thing this morning that the Central News South service, presented from Abingdon, will close. In its place will be a new "Thames Valley" service, formed from the closure and/or extension of the Meridian West service. The new service would be presented from the present Meridian West studio at their base in Whiteley, Southampton."

A press release has apparently gone out outlining the plans.

More when we have it...
