BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

Tim Willcox is great when he's on location - right up until he starts trying to interview crowds. He's prodding everyone in sight, and asking them about money and banks - and none of them have a clue what he is saying!

EDIT: And now poor Tim getting shouted at and shoved around by very angry officials - they were trying to cover up the camera and push them all away. Back to the studio now!

He's at it again... this time trying to talk to a chap getting money out of a cash machine. It was cringeworthy.

I'm surprised he didn't try speaking Spanish to any of them as a laugh. Wink

Tim always does a fantastic job on location. But he should stop trying to speak to people who don't speak English when live on air. That man outside the cash machine could barely understand Tim and could only say that "Europe are not helping."

With Sophie presenting now, does this mean that this is the first time Tim and Sophie have been on air together in some form since the 1st November.

Anyone who still had any doubts that Eddie Mair is one of the best interviewers at the BBC may well have had their mind changed after this morning's Andrew Marr show.

I loved Eddie Mair today. His interview with Boris was great. BoJo was squirming when Eddie was pressing him about his past. Loved it when he called him a "nasty piece of work."

Yes, in fact I remember always racing home from school in about 2000/2001 so I could tune in for the 4:00 pm bulletin on News 24 with Matthew and Jane. Contrary to what scudamoret says, there always seemed to be a lot of breaking news in the 4:00-5:00pm hour back then. I remember being about 15 or so myself then and being frequently frustrated that I couldn't capture video clips depicting a "normal" hour at that time! Sort of stupid now when you look back!

It's not stupid at all. I'm 15 now and I always try to run home as quickly as possible to tune into the news channel. Especially on Mondays when I new that Sopel and Maitlis were on. I don't mind Matthew and Jane, I suppose they are the best pairing to have on that time seeing as Jon and Louise no longer work on the channel.

Worth mentioning that Jeremy Paxman has made his first Newsnight appearance of the year. He's been of filming for a new programme he's doing. It's been interesting to see how Newsnight would survive without Paxman there week in week out. He's going to have to retire some day. It just hasn't been the same without him. Newsnight is Paxman if he's not there then Newsnight wouldn't be Newsnight. Kirsty Wark would be a nice replacement, she's been on the programme nearly just as long as Jeremy. But she is 58 and she has spoke about opening a restaurant when she leaves broadcasting.
Newsnight might be better of with a younger presenter. Paxman started when he was around 40. Wouldn't be a better idea to have Emily Maitlis as a new lead presenter? Or perhaps even someone completely different.

It's a shame they ended up keeping Ben Brown on NC! I think he's so wasted as a presenter and should get back into reporting (like Chris Eakin). Good to see Sophie Long being removed from the 2pm shift to in favour of Joanna Gosling! I would have rather seen Julian Worricker or Nicholas Owen promoted alongside Joanna though!

Am I the only one who likes Ben Brown as both a presenter and a reporter? I don't see what people's problem with him is.

Yes, you are the only one who likes Ben Brown.

Mishal Husain is doing the final network bulletins from Television Centre this evening, which includes tonight's Ten.

Couldn't have chosen someone better to present this very poignant bulletin.

Agreed! She was terrible on the Christmas bulletins, properly terrible. The newsdesk is not her thing!

I don't think Jaxford was being sarcastic - there's nothing wrong with Mishal Husain, in fact she's pretty good!

Yes I wasn't being sarcastic. She's a true pro and it's her shift so it makes sense for her to do it.

So from next week there will be no more biz presenters? What will happen to the likes of Juliette Foster, hopefully she appears more on World now or even better becomes a news presenter again. She was great on Sky.

EDIT: ''So this really is it'' , the line with which Juliette ended her biz update, possible last one ever. Shocked

Possibly. She wouldn't end it like that if it wasn't her last. Juliette has to be my favourite business presenter. She was good at Sky and I wish she received an opportunity to be a news presenter.

Presenters have been popping up all over the place (as expected) , I've never seen Robert Hall present on the news channel before. What other reporters have presented on the news channel?

Robert Hall has done plenty of presenting before. There are a few reporters have before as well including Sangita Myska, Luisa Baldini, Gavin Hewitt, Razia Iqbal and Jo Coburn. Out of those only Luisa has presented recently.

The Weather Thread

Are they bringing extra staff in to help while the move is underway?
Almost certainly, if they're having to staff two sites at once during the migration.

Another new forecaster on today. Stav Danaos from Reporting Scotland. Sara Thornton making a few appearances this week as well.

Alice Baxter doing a damn good job too. I've never been keen on her when doing Business news but she is quite brilliant right now.

Have to agree. Never like her normally, the hand gesture stuff just doesn't suit her. But put her in front of a desk and give her some non Business stories and she's actually quite good. No sign of Peter Dobbie, but we don't need him.
Amy Garcia is presenting 60 Seconds on BBC Three tonight.

Another good presenter. Done stuff for Look North in the past, but now does a lot for South Today. I could see her going far.
