…and finally

Even worse, let's try and get James Martin back 😱

You rang?

Putting the past to one side, I'm actually really saddened by this news, but at the same time it did not come as a total surprise - it's felt for a while that this is where things might be headed. 20 years is a long time anywhere but especially online. I was 16 when I first found the place, I'm heading towards 40 now!

I'll miss the insight, and especially the tech talk in the Eurovision thread having been to the last two productions live (and was all set to go to Rotterdam as well.)

The world changes, and newer generations are not going to have the same outlook or approach as the ones before them. For me, it's another part of my past that has itself become part of the past.

So congratulations Asa on 20 years. I wish Rob well and I look forward to the new Forum.

Can we have a "best bits" montage over The Tourists at the very end of the last night?!

You've been a wonderful audience, and TV Live are very lucky to have you!

James Martin is an excellent name.

Are you also not the chef?

Welcome back.

The ITN Nostalgia Thread

Alastair Burnet and Reginald Bosanquet with News at Ten from 1978.

The ‘Goodnight’ from Alastair included a wide shot of the studio, normally reserved for after he would say Goodnight with only him in view.

Two legends.

20 years since the Real IRA bombing of BBC TV Centre

As an aside and slightly off topic, that TC7 CSO background (shown where Sarah Montague is using Moira Stuart’s desk) is the same backdrop used - as Rob stated - for Moira’s news inserts during Breakfast and where a cleaner was once captured emptying bins and wiping-down desks during one slip-up in the CSO reel.

(I’m sure it was a CSO reel rather than an actual backdrop).

Otherwise, 20 years has flown by. This feels like only yesterday.

I forgot to mention in my post above: As a mark of respect for this very sad announcement, today’s newscasters will all be wearing black.

…and finally

Likewise, Bilky. A message on my ‘phone when I woke up this morning alerted me to the news of TVF’s closure.

Given my time zone, I missed out on all the discussion. As many of you have said, TVF was a daily staple for most of us, some days with more intensity than others. And as many have also said, the community has led to friendships away from these boards. That alone is testament enough to the camaraderie the forum has brought to many of us.

As for joining, it was 2004 for me and I signed-up in Bangkok Airport of all places! At an old-style Internet cafe, passing time between flights. I was googling something for some reason (probably Moira Stuart) and TV Forum came up in the search results.

The rest - as they say - is history. To be a member of a community forum for almost 20 years is an honour. Especially as an ‘outsider’ who doesn’t work in Television News, but is fascinated by it.

Where else would one have learned the proper addressing and formatting of BIG MOIRA (Hymagumba back in the day), or have been enthralled by the statistical brilliance of Tumble Tower. And - of course - the brilliant contributions of many who have allowed us to share our passion, mostly without fear or favour.

The fact this thread has reached 12 packed pages in a short space of time says it all.

Lastly, thank you Asa, for giving us this platform and allowing us to indulge in our passion. There is nothing else quite like TV Forum. The successor forum has quite big shoes to fill!

(Thanks also to all the Mods over the years).

The Sky News Thread

Sky News International (online) is showing the Holyrood play out of the Sturgeon committee hearing. It’s refreshing to see a screen with zero clutter, aside from a small Sky News logo bottom right. Far less distraction on screen.

Watching the Salmond hearing last Friday, as well as the Sky logo, they also had an “on delay” caption constantly on screen. But not so today.

Wonder why.

What’s the UK version showing?

The Sky News Thread

Sturgeon Inquiry: former BBC Editor Brian Taylor (Scotland Politics) is being interviewed by Niall Paterson now. Possibly by Skype. The worst DTL(?) quality I’ve ever seen. Sound is fine. Picture is horrible.

It’s comforting, Rob, to know that the producers actually DO listen to us here on TV Forum and take our advice from time to time.

Now, about Piers Morgan himself,.........😉

TV Forum: New for (the middle of) 2020

JAS84 posted:
Have any posts been deleted or moved from that thread? That could result in the page last visited in the thread being AFTER the last page. Say, you visited page 20 of a thread, but two pages of posts were moved to a new thread. A few new posts are made, but now there's only 19 pages. Page 20 would be a 404 error page in that situation.

Yup. I experienced exactly that last week on the (then open) Prince Phillip thread. Precisely as you describe it.
