BBC National/News Channel from New Broadcasting House

Does anyone who what plans there are for studio D? I know it will be home to BBC London but what set will be put in there? I have seen posts suggesting they will keep their existing set but surely a new set somewhere between C and the new Wales would be more versatile and in keeping with the new style. Then it could be used for the 9pm hour, Newswatch etc.

Also, does their current studio have windows? If the One Show is going in there surely it needs them?

This is definitely something I have been wondering. Most of the other news sets have many programmes squeezed in, but London's set is free most of the day. Surely they will base some other programmes there.

BBC News: Presenters & Rotas

I heard Malcom Brabant on the BBC World Service this afternoon with a report from Copenhagen on how good riding bikes is for your health. Is this his first report since coming back? It's good to hear him on the BBC again!

That's great news. Hope he's over the worst of a pretty nasty experience.

I agree with you totally! I remember when he was the Athens correspondent. I'm guessing Copenhagen doesn't have many news stories, compared with Athens so sounds like a gentle ease back into reporting.

I remember hearing him a couple of months ago, I think also in Copenhagen (was that not where he was receiving treatment?) It's such a shame that his new patch suddenly became a very busy one after his illness began.

S4C Newyddion

I like the set but it does feel very big for a region - I wonder whether they would be better just to use one side for bulletins and then for some other programmes (I don't know what) use the whole thing.

Considering the size of America I am always amazed by how low tv viewing figures are.

BBC World News from New Broadcasting House

I don't get the criticism of the Singapore studio. Sure, the desk looks old, but the studio is so small that all you can ever really see is the single anchor shot of the window, which looks excellent. I don't think there's much else they can realistically do with that space.

Then they should move out to somewhere else.

Yes - that would be an amazing use of money when the BBC has to reduce budgets by 20% to cope with the recent changes to its funding. (The BBC licence fee will now be funding BBC World Service Radio, S4C Welsh television etc.)

To be fair - it would be BBC Worldwide which would fund a new studio in Singapore or Washington - not the licence fee.

Interesting to see Yalda Hakim presenting the World News/News Channel simualcast. Shes obviously experienced with foreign news considering her old job, but I can't help thinking shes a bit 'awkward', anyone else get that feeling?

Yes, sad to say, I don't think her journalistic skills were paramount in the decision to employ her. It's the sort of thing you expect from American networks and Sky News. You'd hope the BBC wouldn't make recruitment choices on such superficial criteria, but it appears they might have in this case...

...still, maybe I'm being a bit harsh. She might improve...

From what I've seen of her reporting on location, she has been very good. And her interviewing is pretty strong as well. I'm sure her studio presentation will improve with time. And, I would't be quite so cynical about why she was hired...

Radio4's coverage has been very good so far. Julian worricker and Jane Garvey among the people along the route with Sian Williams in the studio. Tv with Dimbleby though - well lets not go there...

Baroness Thatcher has died

On Wednesday then...
Radio 4's coverage is to be led by Sian Williams with commentary by James Naughtie. It will be on air from 10-12.
5Live are doing their own thing with Victoria Derbyshire, Shelagh Fogarty and Peter Allen from 9.30-2.
World Service don't have any schedule changes although I imagine Dan Damon may opt into bits on World Update.
...so that is how the Radio coverage is shaping up.
