ITV News: Rotas & Presenters

With Nina returning for the Queens Jubilee coverage I wonder what we can expect of her return and how that will affect Natasha? Is there room for both at ITN towers? Surely not.

I suspect they will keep them both. Probably with Nina doing less national bulletins and Natasha doing them instead.

Terrible crash in the News Channel studio this morning:

And check out Timbo chilling and in those jeans! Smile

Shocked

Seeing Tim with his feet up on the desk makes me wander - do all the newsreaders take such a relaxed attitude to being in the studio? Simon McCoy was caught 'napping' a couple of months ago so he clearly is relaxed as well!

Jackie Bird?

Sally Magnuson always does Thursday/Friday with Jackie doing Mon/Tue/Wed.

Except when Catriona Shearer or (rarely) David Henderson present.

Talking of presenters, what's Sally McNair up to now? I've not seen her for a while.

She presents the weekend bulletins now and then, as well as the Breakfast updates.

Thank you.

About a month ago I remember seeing Sally McNair doing a 6.30 weekday reporting Scotland. I remember thinking at the time I hadn't seen her doing the full main programme before.

Culture Secretary unveils plans for new national TV channel

It's worth noting too that many of the US stations used as an example may be local in the sense they offer local content to the local audience, but many are owned by ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC.

It is interesting that Sky are trialing a hyper-local news service. I wonder if this is the beginning of their attempt to replacate this?

Culture Secretary unveils plans for new national TV channel

I realise the government's plans have been criticised before on this forum. So could with the combined expertise of everyone here we maybe try and suggest some answers. In other countries local (not regional) TV is viable so there is no reason why it could not be here. So how do you make a commercially viable local TV service in the UK? Any ideas?

Kate Silverton presenting the 8:30am shift with Tim on the News Channel this morning.

Very interesting - it seems like they don't know what to do with her now Sian Williams is deputy on the One. I wouldn't be surprised if we see her appearing on News at Five soon, as that is the most senior shift on the news channel.

And, as an aside, this was in effect her old shift anyway. If the BBC feel they need to give Kate a regular slot in order to keep her from leaving, then they could give her back the morning shift. Carrie Gracie could easily be sloted into World Service when she returns.

BBC Breakfast

I will happily admit I have am not a regular viewer of NWT and haven't seen Roger on a night in night out basis. However, whenever I see any clip of him he just looks awkward. I wasn't impressed by him on breakfast the other week, and when he did the relief shifts on the news channel a couple of years back he was awful. Let's be honest - I won't judge him on NWT, but he is not in the same league as Nicholas Owen/Simon McCoy/Jon Kay et al. Breakfast is supposed to be a senior role within news, and I do not feel Roger is good enough for it.

London Mayoral & Local Election(s) Coverage 2012

Jeremy Vine for Question Time surely. He has the personality, knowledge and credentials to fit the role perfectly. They also need to find something for Jeremy to do in the longterm, he can't just appear during elections!

Urgh no. He's far too confrontational and not in the subtle manner Dimbleby has.

I agree, but who could be a suitable replacement for Dimbleby?

I think there is likely to be a lot of disappointment with whoever it will be.

When Dimbleby leaves surely Jeremy Paxman or Huw Edwards?

Though I would love Emily Maitlis to because she is an excellent and I don't agree with the earlier comment about her being too lightweight. Like someone else said she does present Newsnight!

You may be interested to see Boylesports odds on this. When Dimbleby had to take a week of a couple of years ago they released the following odds on his replacement:

Jeremy Vine: 2/1
John Humphrys: 3/1
Jeremy Paxman: 4/1
Gavin Esler: 5/1
Andrew Marr: 6/1
Kirsty Wark: 6/1
Andrew Neil: 8/1
Nicky Campbell: 10/1
Kirsty Young: 10/1
Nick Robinson: 12/1
Alistair Campbell: 16/1
Adam Boulton: 16/1
David Mitchell: 20/1
Huw Edwards: 20/1
Emily Maitliss: 25/1
Hardeep Singh-Kohli: 33/1
Stephen Fry: 50/1
Frankie Boyle: 100/1
Richard Keys: 100/1
Andy Gray: 500/1

Kirsty Young is a name no one has mentioned above but I see is 10/1. She seems to have a habit of securing unexpected promotions and is very good on Radio 4!

They have something for him to do, he does a radio show five days a week.

But surely he is not going to do radio 2 forever. I think what Worzel was getting at is they will have to find him a role within news in the longterm . It seems to me that such a role is only going to come from Radio 4 or Newsnight. But he has done Newsnight, so may not want to go back. Maybe the Daily Politics?

Why? Confused BBC Radio 2 has had a news-based lunchtime phone-in for as long as I can remember. Jeremy's hosted it for years now, ever since Jimmy Young retired and I think it's probably fairly popular with the public. Why can't he stay on that for as long as he wants? After all, Dimbleby has done Question Time and Paxman Newsnight for years and years and no-one seems to have a problem with that. Why must Jeremy Vine return to BBC News all of a sudden?

I'm not suggesting he is about to be thrown off his show and I certainly don't have a problem with him on radio 2. I just don't think he will stay on radio 2 forever and will want a new challenge - and the question is - where could that be?

Sky News: Presentation Discussion

Sky News Australia has a business news channel. From the direction I have seen Sky going over the last few years, which these tweeks add to, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a UK business channel planned for the future.
