Just seen an ident (no caps I'm afraid) - young girl just stood there, with the S4C logo coming in from the right. Rather dull...

Did they ever learn from ITV?
Having seen parts of this new look, it resembles the exact type of thing that gets ridiculed on the Gallery over here every week.

I don't agree at all with age limit's, really it shouldn't matter what your age is as long as your not causing a hassle. From personal experience, I've known quite a lot of people around the age of 10-14 on the internet, and whilst I've encountered my fair share of troublemakers, most of said people have conducted themselves in a very mature and friendly manner, probably more so than some of the so-called "veterans" on here.

Tyne Tees kept its existing ident for regional junctions. Why, I don't know. Maybe it was felt Tyne Tees shouldn't miss out on regional idents for regional junctions if Yorkshire had them, yet Granada was just left with the standard hearts at all times.

Is anyone able to confirm that Tyne Tees really did carry on using the 1998 post-C3NE ident for regional junctions until September 2000? It's taken as given that this is what happened but I've yet to see a single example of a junction using the old ident between November 1999 and September 2000. If they did, what happened in July 2000 when ITV switched all presentation to widescreen as the old TTTV ident was 4:3 - was there a widescreen cropped version used for the final few months until they introduced the
rebrand?

I can see why YTV had separate regional idents as they had a new batch already made so there may have been a perceived need to give that presentation which had been bought and paid for some use, but would GMG really allow a pre-generic Tyne Tees ident (which was only ever supposed to be a stopgap anyway) to carry on into the generic era? And if they did, then it seems odd that the Granada region didn't continue to use their old ident for regional junctions too.

Is it possible that early TV pres websites (which were often based largely on the author's imagination to fill in the gaps of the sparse amount of material that was actually available) documented this because it seemed to make sense given the regional idents that were introduced in September 2000, but in fact September 2000 was when regional idents were *re*introduced to TTTV, and until then they had just used the generics full time?

And when it comes to the rebrand in late 2000, does anyone know what the deal was with the Tyne Tees getting this? It seemed a very odd move to do something like this so late in the day - it was now almost a year since the generic idents had been introduced, and it was odder still that clearly quite a bit of effort had gone into the package yet they didn't bother (ever, even after the ITV1 rebrand) to do a simple re-edit of the hearts ident to include the new logo.

As far as that is concerned, they were definitely still using the weather front-cap, which was essentially a modified 1998 ident (skip to 2:16).

Why did that nealry lead to the whole concept being dropped?

I think that matter may have already been covered earlier in the thread, but as TV Live put it:

Quote:
By October 1998 the England and Wales ITV franchises were owned by 4 companies: Carlton Communications (London Weekday, Central, Westcountry), United News & Media (Anglia, Meridian, HTV), Granada Media Group (Granada, LWT, Tyne Tees, Yorkshire) and Border Television which had somehow managed to retain its independence. Almost 10 years after trying and failing to introduce a single identity across the ITV regions, it was decided a unified ITV look should be attempted again. After all, with fewer companies to please the process should be a piece of cake, right? Wrong! Following fall outs between GMG and Carlton and plenty of picking up balls and going home the October 1998 date for introducing a new generic look was missed. A new network symbol had been chosen (a heart shape) but the companies failed to agree on a design for the idents.

So in 1999, with a unified ITV looking increasingly unlikely, GMG set about creating new full time idents for their 3 northern franchises: Granada, Tyne Tees and Yorkshire. Unfortunately, mere weeks after completion, Carlton announced it was going solo and would be using its own set of Heart idents, designed by Lambie-Nairn. This gave GMG, UNM and Border the green light to launch their generic Hearts. The downside was the above YTV idents, which were far superior in terms of quality to the Heart idents, were relegated to regional use. All 25+ of them!

In my view the Carlton 'Star' idents where some of the best presentation ever made. The ITV hearts motifs that made up the format where from, a different design agency - which allowed Lambie-Nairm to use them?
anyone have links to the original test idents again?

Heres a few (plenty more available from the user)

Obviously ended up being plighted by various disagreements from both the companies taking on this look and the designers, and eventually got boiled down to the set of ident's we know today.

Also, whilst there isn't any real examples available on the internet (used to be, then the user closed their account), this is another concept shortly afterwards that didn't make it for similar reasons, and nearly led to the entire network abandoning the idea.

Identify the correct year for the Pres.

When did Yorkshire start using this branding and when was it dropped?

I think that's one of their seasonal graphics packages they used with the generic look (even had an accompanying clock). I suspect its summer 1993, since the clip this come from (uploaded by benriggers) is 25th July 1993, and there is a clip on TVARK of the clock introducing the Calendar Yorkshire Day Special. Most likely would have been dropped in Autumn and replaced with this

I think this practice continued until the new look in September 1994.
(Also just noticed how similar the whole thing looks to the BBC graphics of the time).

No. The first ever Carlton-branded startup from Westcountry in 1999 did reference 'Carlton Television for the Westcountry'. The last ever Central link in 2002 did mention 'the Central region'. I believe those were the only 2 times over the 3 years that the regional names were quoted in continuity. Normal state of play was just to refer to all 3 regions as 'Carlton' with no mention of Central or Westcountry (although Westcountry did occasionally mention 'the team here in Plymouth' and I think Central occasionally used the line 'the heart of the ITV network' in their links as an homage to their old 'the centre of the ITV network' strapline).

No. Announcers on Carlton (Central) would regularly reference the 'Central Region' - Amanda Youngs who had the honour of announcing the last Carlton (Central) link made reference to the 'Central Region' as a complete in joke in that it was one of her favourite announcements into Central News at Six.

The last ever bit of Carlton continuity was actually done by Ted May (used to be a video on YouTube of the last announcement).
